Small Scale Mid-Century Modern

December 29, 2015 at 9:09 am by Claudia

Ice, sleet and snow overnight. This morning, there’s a very small amount of snow on the ground and a layer of ice over everything. My dad’s Florida car, now mine, has never seen snow or ice. It must be shocked! (I apologized to it.)

Scout managed to do her business safely and that’s all that matters to us. We’re going to sit back and wait for the temperatures to warm up. Fortunately, we don’t have to be anywhere

12-29 tree

I’m happy that I waited to put the tree up because we’re far from tired of it and the glow of the lights is such a lovely antidote for these dark, gray mornings. The outside lights are still glowing on the porch railings. I find it all very warm and comforting.

Don: Do Not Read Any Further!

In my searches on Etsy, I discovered a wonderful miniaturist, Gabrielle of In the Twelfth Scale, who lives in Australia. I was drawn to her work because she had designed a modern sofa that I thought would be perfect for the Top Secret Project. I had to wait a while to place the order, as she had other commissions to finish, but it was worth the wait. This arrived on Christmas Eve:

Isn’t it wonderful? Quite frankly, I would love a life-sized version for our den! It’s long, deliberately so, and it looks very nice in the TSP.

I’ve begun to feel the urge to work on this project again. But I have to finish putting my office together and then I have to do all my research for Romeo and Juliet, which starts rehearsals January 12th. (We won’t talk about the fact that I don’t want to leave home for five weeks.)

Maybe I’ll be able to do a little work on the TSP before I go. Fingers crossed.

Happy Tuesday.

I’m glad you get to stay safe and sound at home today Claudia. I’m also glad that a lot of snow didn’t fall! Your little tree is very beautiful. We put ours up very late too and so I’m leaving it up for another week or so. That new sofa looks perfect in the TSP. Blessings, Betsy

It’s raining now, Betsy, but it’s still quite cold, so the rain is just making things worse. Hopefully, the warmer temperatures later in the day will melt some of this stuff.

So glad all is well in your world today. I am enjoying my tree this week and it is soothing to me. I love the TSP sofa! It looks much like the one my daughter has in her MCM home. Resting some more today with Charlie by my side. I am going to see the Grands later and catch up on all the new Christmas toys!
    hugs,
    Linda

So glad you didn’t get all that snow that was predicted….I think we got your share. About 6 inches…ice, then more snow. Unfortunately it’s not going to warm up, so we’ll have to deal with it. I absolutely love that sofa! Very stylish…fits right in with your whole concept! Our tree is still up, and I really enjoyed the lights yesterday…it lit up our living room! But, I may start removing a few other things I had placed out…getting that itch for clean and simple again! ;)

You definitely got more than we did – but boy, this ice is treacherous! Clean and simple is my watchword lately. That means some purging lies ahead!

Glad Scout was able to negotiate the snow and ice. Keep cozy in that sweet cottage of yours. Maybe work on your office for a while, then reward yourself with some work on TSP. Sofa reminds me of my parents’ sofa…best nap couch I’ve ever slept on! I showed my daughter Caroline’s cottage and TSP…. I see she’s been researching kits. Uh-oh….

The sofa is wonderful!! Glad your tree is still up. Mine has been up since after Thxgvg and I have no plans to take it down yet. Twelfth Night is still days away. The lights make me happy, and I am all for happy.
As Donnamae said, we got about 6 inches, but the ice and then more snow on top of it makes it a deadly snow to have to shovel. So thankful for the snowblower (and my hubs who uses it)!!
Hope you have a good day!

I don’t know is Don is going to use the snowblower or just wait the whole thing out!

Getting the office space complete hopefully will go quickly. Will you have Internet access there? Wifi? You’ll be able to work on the play there… A nice quiet plac to work. Though I don’t think your house has many distraction noise wise.
The tree is lovely. I haven’t put one up in years— but when I did it was mid to late December and stayed up until after New Years… Because it was so lovely. Now – that TSP is coming along nicely! I agree- A life sized version would be really nice.

We have WI-FI throughout the house and, in fact, the modem and router are on the other desk in that room, so I’ll be fine.

You know, Claudia, before seeing your little white tree, I don’t think I could have imagined myself with anything but a green tree – although I’m fine with artificial trees [especially being an apartment-dweller as I’ve always been]. But now, seeing how really lovely and festive your little tree is, with its robe of tiny white lights and bitty ornaments, I could definitely imagine getting a white tree. And a small one too. Even in photos, the glow of those little lights against the dreary gray morning is very warm and appealing. It must look even better “in person.” ⭐️?⭐️

Thank you, Janet! We’re were just saying earlier today – Don especially – that we’d be perfectly happy with just this tree. It looks so lovely and adds just the right magical touch.

I love the glow of Christmas lights but haven’t put a tree up in years. Perhaps I need to get some fairy lights just because and keep them up all year long. :) That teeny sofa is the bomb! The TSP is gonna be fabulous! Enjoy these next two weeks at home, doing what you are able. Best wishes for the new year!

Wow, I’d missed the new s that you’d be gone five weeks on a job. You’re starting the year off with a bang.

    The TSP already looks amazing.

I put my little holiday tree up late and find it also fills me with a good feeling the minute I plug it in each day. I guess if we had it up all year long, the bloom would be off the rose and this is what keeps Christmas special, at least with the multi-colored lights, but I intend to enjoy the tree throughout the coming weekend and I’ll take it down first week in January. We removed all the lights from the exterior of our home but left a tiny little string around the front-door frame and a short strand of icicle lights (blueish/ice-blue hues) which string along a ledge. It’s just enough, again, to brighten things up as we go into the new year. Our nights got cold…we’re in the 30s continuously over the past few days come nightfall-late…and the lights are indeed warming at least in the visual.

My husband actually clustered mini lights around plants we have which are vulnerable to frost/freeze, and it has worked…although we forgot about our 30-year-old ficus and it got hit badly by the plummeting temps; I mourn for it and don’t know if it will recover. Our SoCalif lawns, what were left of them from severe drought, are now yellow straw and I just read an article yesterday about the millions of trees, especially evergreens, which experts do not expect will rally even with deep-soaking rains of El Nino if indeed El Nino does bring us water next month. So sad. The world doesn’t need to lose more trees. I know from a workshop I attended once, that certain evergreens/firs have a shallow root ball, so I assume that’s why they’ve suffered so greatly as opposed to other species who have deep, deep roots which tap into any ‘underground’ water (I don’t know how that works actually, with deep roots, but…). What they’re warning us so much about here is that if/when we do get rains, it’s expected that many trees, weakened, will topple over/blow over…they’re very unstable in the ground…so, to be careful, with where you park a car or if you’re under them, if they’re planted too close to a structure, etc.

We bought another clunker car yesterday to replace my usual clunker car. It has some issues but the price was right. I don’t like it much but I’m grateful we could find something affordable. So, Husband is off to get it registered at the motor vehicle department and that’s all that’s happening in my neck ‘o the woods on a sunny day in the low 60s at noon. I won’t accomplish much today because I did something to hurt my arm…have no idea how…and I guess it’s in the shoulder, but I am having a hard time lifting my right arm to even do normal tasks…and it woke me up several times in the night, hurting…so I’m not very fun to be around today because if anything else I’m just peeved since I need to be doing stuff!!! I can relate to what you’re gone thru with your ankle!

The Tsp looks great with the addition of the sofa. The color and style fit perfectly in a studio setting!

I hope most of your snow and ice melt off on their own and the temps warm enough to avoid any refreeze. We had tons of rain but thankfully no snow or ice.

    Enjoy your day!

The ice is the biggest pain, especially since we have a long, uphill driveway.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
