Snow and Music

March 4, 2019 at 10:27 am by Claudia

Here we are this morning. Lots of heavy, wet snow – about 5 inches or so. But it’s absolutely beautiful out there, so there’s that. We’d love to think this is the last snow, but at this time of year, all bets are off. Don’s going to go outside soon and see if he should use the snowblower or if shoveling will do. I’m pretty sure he’ll choose the snowblower.

Since the original forecast was for 5-8 inches, we’re fortunate, I guess. (I’d would much rather have had less than 3 inches.) Oh well.

We had a lovely time at Rick and Doug’s yesterday. Doug’s daughters are beautiful, both inside and out, and it was such a pleasure getting to know them. I’ve spent time with one of his daughters before and adore her, but I hadn’t been able to spend time with the other two. The baby is simply beautiful! And I got to hold her for a long time, which made me enormously happy. She was absolutely fascinated by Don. No matter where he was in the room, she was tracking him. She’s six months old now and seems incredibly calm. An old soul.

Anyway, she’s a joy. I have lots of pictures, but I won’t share them here. In this era of social media, we have to be very careful and respectful about what we share publicly.

We’ve been watching some documentaries on Netflix of late and one of them was about the late, great saxophonist John Coltrane. Fascinating. He died much too young, but what an amazing person he was. In the course of watching it, I mentioned to Don that I used to have an album called John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman  that I loved. Johnny Hartman was an incredible crooner, with one of the best voices I’ve ever heard. I told Don I suspected the album was out in the shed, which is where all warped and ruined albums seem to live. Anyway, I was raving about what a great record it was.

The mail came on Saturday – Don had a package from Amazon. He said I should open it, so I did.

That little sneak! I was so surprised and happy! And now he is, as well, because he’s heard it and understands why I couldn’t stop talking about it.

Two greats coming together – gorgeous, beautiful ballads.

Don just went outside to check out the snow. I’m watching him and I must say the snow looks heavy. If he snowblows, I don’t have to get too involved. If he shovels, I do.

Hmmmm.

Happy Monday.

Hope he chooses the snowblower and gives his lungs and his back a bit of a break. As you said, we know there will be more!!

Sounds like you had a grand time yesterday. After a month of just the two of you, I bet it was nice to be around others for a bit.

Stay warm! Have a good Monday.

It’s actually not at all hard to shovel and the snow blower seemed like overkill. He shoveled the driveway and part of the parking area and then had to run an errand. I shoveled the rest. It’s relatively warm today, so some of it is melting. But we’re going to salt everything as it’s going to be very cold for the next three days.

Oh,Claudia,I am so happy to know that you have the John Coltrane /Johnny Hartman cd. I have had it for many years and it is a favorite. It was a gift from my brother who is a retired jazz music educator. That photo today is gorgeous,xo

Good afternoon, Claudia. We have a little bit of snow here in our part of WV today. Not enough to bother with shoveling, though. Just enough to be pretty on the trees. Wishing you a lovely and peaceful day. I always love reading your posts. (((Hugs)))

Glad Don and you were able to handle the snow easily. I’m totally ignorant about snow. Is wet snow easier to deal with, or drier snow? I do know we prefer wet snow in the Sierras so there is water runoff to fill our reservoirs. It’s been raining one day then dry the next. I’m staying in to sort our 15+ years of print photos and negatives. I went thru one shoebox (actually an acid-free photo box) last night while watching Victoria. Just a broad sort to begin with, tossing most duplicates and all bad shots. About 15 boxes to go, then I can do the fine sort.

Wet snow is much heavier and harder to shovel. Dry snow is better.

I guess the further east you are the more snow – we got about 11 inches in the burbs of Hartford. It is so pretty covering the trees, but I’ve seen it so now it can melt. Great Jazz – my favorite genre of music. 16 days til Spring! And the time change this weekend means more light at the end of the day. Hurrah!

It was easier to shovel today, Mary! We managed to finish by noon.

Lovely picture. The wet stuff is the hardest to shovel but that’s the kind that sticks so beautifully to every tree branch. We are in a deep freeze in SE Wisconsin and all the snow (still knee deep in our backyard) is doing very little melting as a result. I did discover yesterday I can get to the feeders out back by walking on top of it now so there’s that. I’ll have to look to see if any parts of that album can be found online to give a listen.

We are entering that same deep freeze tomorrow, which is why is was essential to get everything shoveled today!

Well…it sounds like the snow wasn’t all that bad. Course any snow is too much at this point in the season….but I have a feeling we are not out of the woods yet.

Glad you enjoyed yesterday…sounds like a lovely visit. Must have been great just to be able to socialize again…eh?

Great little surprise for you from Don…that guy! Enjoy your day! ;)

I haven’t seen anyone but the doctor and Don for 6 weeks, so yes, it was very nice indeed!

Glad you did not get as much snow as predicted. Same here we received about 2 inches not the 5 to 8 they were predicting. Enjoy John Coltrane and John Hartman.

Totally dazzling, that snow. But I’m so ready for it to stop. The cold too.

I was lucky enough to see Johnny Hartman in performance with Sarah Vaughn and boy — what a treat. Two marvelous voices with such a wonderful stage presence. Thanks for the memory.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
