Snow, Galloping & The Quilt

February 11, 2015 at 8:52 am by Claudia

We managed to escape our little cabin-fever ridden cottage yesterday and took a short drive with Scout. She needed to get away, too. Nothing exciting, just some country roads. But at times, the view was breathtaking; acres and acres of white snow broken up by fences and barns and a house or two. It was a sunny day and there’s nothing more beautiful than sunlight on new-fallen snow.

2-11 how high the snow

As in this shot of the big corral, taken late yesterday afternoon. You can see how much snow we have by looking at the fence posts.

We ended up in our little town, where Don ordered some lunch to go while Scout and I took a little gallop/walk at the library. She needed to move, that girl, and her mini-corral just doesn’t cut it (though we are oh, so grateful for it this winter).

2-11 library snow

The view from our gallop. (Yes, I have to gallop, too.)

Don has to go into the city today. I have to go in on Friday. The temperatures are supposed to be frigid when I’m there, at least for this first visit. Oh, boy. Nothing like walking around the city in sub-zero temps!

Some of you asked to see the quilt I’m working on, so I’m going to share some pictures I took when I finished the quilt top. I was working in Hartford and my two colleagues, Mary and Robyn, held it up for me.

The fabric is designed by the talented Camille Roskelley. I love the colors she uses in her designs. They are happy colors and the prints have a wonderfully retro feel to them. This is to be a wall hanging and eventually it will hang on the stairway wall. The pattern is also by Camille – a very, very simple, yet wonderfully graphic design.

I pieced it with my featherweight, Mabel, who often accompanies me when I’m on the road.

quiltdesign

I’m hand quilting it with lots of interlocking circles of various sizes. I was just beginning to quilt when I took this picture. (You can also see a mini-history of my photo watermarks! Believe me, there are lots more out there.)

Now I have to get back into the rhythm of grabbing an hour or two every day to do some hand quilting. And that will have to wait until I finish this coaching job.

Happy Wednesday.

I love your quilt! The fabrics are just wonderful. I made the same quilt pattern about a year ago out of different fabrics and was going to use it as a wall hanging, but it turned out to be perfect for a spring-summer throw at the end of my bed.

I already have so many throws and quilts, I figured the wall was the best place for it, Debbie.

Gorgeous quilt and beautiful snow pictures. Glad you three were able to escape the confines of your home and get out in the sun! It is cold, cold here too (with a forecast low of 1 on Sunday – yikes!!), but the sun is out and the sky is blue — always a good thing.

The quilt colors will fit right in with your cottage. It’s lovely and homey. And, of course, you have a Featherweight, something I’ve coveted for a long time. I have two sewing machines, one for upstairs and one for downstairs…yes, I’m spoiled. One was a gift from my dad when I got engaged. The other, a gift to myself after the birth of my younger daughter. The serger I own is a 10-year anniversary gift from my husband. Now that older daughter sews, all of them get plenty of use. Be careful walking in that cold and snow in the big city.

I will. I have two sewing machines, too. The Elna is in a permanent position up in the studio. And the Featherweight travels from room to room.

Your quilt is gorgeous! Pretty big too – you’ll have a lot of hand quilting to do.

Happy to hear you got out of the house some yesterday! It’s so pretty with all the snow, but hard to live in it. Love the colors and patterns of that fabric. So so pretty! It will look great on the wall.
    hugs,

It is so good to get out and about after being inside for days. Makes breathing even better and a bit sweeter, too. And you are right, it probably made Scout a very happy girl as well. A few gallops are always good for the soul.
The quilt is lovely. I do remember it from last year when you were working on it. The colors are perfect as an antidote to the weather outside. Looks like the colors of our gardens in mid-Summer!!

Ooh, that quilt is beautiful! Sub zero temps starting here tonight, too. The wind is howling right now. But, when there are things you have to do, the temperature doesn’t stop us, does it? I have yoga class tonight, an errand tomorrow, and a little trip to visit Tim on Friday.

Gorgeous snow pics but OMG – that’s a lot of snow! I don’t think I could handle that for the length of time you’ve had it on the ground. Your quilt is just gorgeous!

    Take care and stay warm.

I love your choice of fabrics for your quilt.

I woke up today to that cold that everyone seems to be sharing. It felt as though I had swallowed an entire package of razor blades, so my boss begrudgingly gave me an extra hour at lunch to run home and rummage through the medicine cabinet. I was channel surfing while waiting for tea and all of a sudden if it wasn’t Don Sparks on a rerun of SVU! (I’m sure you’re both used to it, but I thought it was pretty cool.)

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
