I’m going to name this week The Snowathon.
The predictions were for about an inch of snow yesterday. Ummm…..not quite. It snowed all day long and I think we got at least 4 inches, if not 5. Roads were messy, traveling was unwise. So we were stuck here. We are expecting anywhere from 6 – 12 inches of snow on Wednesday. Don leaves for Boston on Friday. That leaves just about a day, if that, to take care of any business he needs to attend to before he leaves. And, to top it off, they are predicting a Nor’Easter with more snow Sunday into Monday. At that point, I will be the only snow shoveler around here and it’s hard to imagine where I’m going to put all that snow.
Not a big fan of February so far.
The bed is supposed to be delivered today sometime between 1 and 5. Don asked them to make sure it says California King on the packaging. (I did the same thing last week.) It does. I actually felt a twinge of sadness at leaving our little full-sized bed in the spare bedroom. That room, like the den, is sunken. You walk down two steps to get there. So it has a sort of attic retreat feel to it. I think we’ve done fairly well, we two tall people, adapting to the bed. Now we’ll have to adapt to a new one. Don will have three nights to sleep on it before he has to adapt to another bed in Boston.
Thanks for all your wonderful comments on our new addition to the living room. We love it and are absolutely sure that buying it was the right thing to do. Oh gosh, I’m itching to do some rearranging, rethinking, re-everything and once the mattress has been delivered and the old mattress taken away, I’ll be able to look at things more clearly. Not that I haven’t already been thinking about it. These aren’t big changes, more like little tweaks I want and need to make.
I’m also dreading the fact that Don is going away. We’ve done this many times and we know how to handle it, but it doesn’t make it any easier. He’s my best friend as well as my husband and I love being with him. We work well together. We like hanging out together. We sort of adore each other.
And he is my fellow snow shoveler!
Happy Tuesday.
Denise says
I’m not looking foward to this next storm Tuesday night into Wednesday. This area is supposed to get freezing rain and ice. This on top of the wet snow we got yesterday. Argh! I hope all goes well with your mattress delivery today.
Claudia says
Me either, Denise. I’m already tired of snow and February is supposed to be snowy!
Donnamae says
I am excited for you…your bed is finally coming! I am sad for you….Don is leaving again. And, I think I am getting sore muscles for you…shoveling! That about sums it up for another day in February…thank goodness it is a short month! ;)
Claudia says
More shoveling and more shoveling this week, Donna! I will be glad to see March!
Linda @ A La Carte says
I am so happy today is new bed day! How long will Don be in Boston? I know you will miss him. You are good at keeping yourself busy while he is gone, but it’s not the same I know. Can’t wait to see the tweaking!!!
Claudia says
He will be gone a little over 2 months, Linda. Sob.
Karen says
Like your ship pic. Good place for it. I LOVE today’s lop picture! How beautiful. You inspire me to get the thing I love and dump the rest. :)
Claudia says
Aw, thank you, Karen!
Lorrie says
The storms just don’t stop, do they? This will be a winter for memories. I hope your bed delivery happens on time with the right size. What fun you’ll have re-arranging everything over time.
Love what you say about your husband – mine is my best friend, too. We are so blessed.
Claudia says
We are very blessed. There’s not a day that goes by where I don’t give thanks for my husband.
Tana says
It doesn’t get any easier when your husband leaves no matter how often it has to be done. My husband was an airline pilot. Can’t wait to see the new bed! I bet it is going to be like sleeping on a cloud!
Keep safe and warm in the snow. We are having below freezing temps all week.
Tana
Claudia says
You understand about husbands who have to be away from home, Tana. It’s cold here, though not as cold as last week, so the snow will be heavier and wetter.
Melanie says
More snow in store for us, too. Got 4″ on Saturday and now another 4″ is expected tonight into tomorrow morning. I don’t mind shoveling the porch and little sidewalk that lead up to our house, but the driveway is a different story. My lower back can’t take it. Hooray on the mattress delivery! I’m sure it’ll take a few nights to get used to it, but you’ll probably love it. I have a window of time – 2-5 – where people are coming into my house, too. But mine’s for heating vent/ductwork cleaning. We’ve lived here 23 years and have never had it done – ick. How long will Don be in Boston?
Claudia says
Our driveway is long and goes uphill, so it’s very hard on our backs, too. We keep hearing dire predictions about how much snow is on the way – I’ve heard up to 14 inches. Please…..NO.
Chris k in Wisconsin says
It truly is wonderful when we are able to spend our life with a person who is not only our spouse, but our best friend. It is good to see that so many of us feel that same thing.
Bed day! Yay! Hope it goes on without a hitch and tomorrow we will see pictures and an account of the problem free delivery and set up.
I have always considered *SNOW* to be a 4-letter word. It is certainly living up to it this year. Enough!
Hope today is a good and successful one for everyone at MHC!!
Claudia says
I think there are a lot of us out there who feel that way about our husbands. I know there are many not-so-happy stories out there, but I must confess I am tired of some of the male-bashing I read on some blogs and elsewhere on the web. Thankfully, there doesn’t seem to be much of it. I just click out and move on.
Thanks for your good wishes, Chris!
Elizabeth says
Yesterday the “dusting” we were suppose to get turned into an all day affair that left a sticky, heavy 3 inches everywhere. I must confess I didn’t shovel. Figure I’ll get it all with the snow blower tomorrow after this next storm passes. Estimates from 3-12 inches. How’s that for a range!
Lucky the mattress wasn’t delivered yesterday in the snow. Can you just imagine the delivery guys with snowy boots all over the floors and stairs? So that’s one good thing, it’s being delivered between storms.
Claudia says
Oh, if only we had a snow blower! I’m grateful that the mattress delivery seems to be sandwiched in perfectly between two storms!
Janet in Rochester says
Good grief, the Valley and Eastern coastal areas have switched places with us this year! You all are getting most of the snow with which we lake-effect types usually have to contend. Makes me feel guilty – and relieved – at the same time! Good news about that mattress! At least you’ll be able to plunk yourselves down into a bed that actually fits and is dreamily comfortable after your shoveling. Personally this year I’m mostly grateful I don’t live in Atlanta. Have fun planning and re-arranging. And sleeping! Bet your body goes into full-out relax mode and gives you a good solid 10 hours the first night!
Claudia says
Oh goodness, what happened in Atlanta was truly mind-boggling!
Nancy Blue Moon says
We got more snow than we expected here too Claudia..expecting more tonight into tomorrow..and even more Sunday..Snowathon is a good word for it all..lol..I love the way you make up these new words..Yea for the bed being delivered today..Boo for Don leaving..I know he loves acting but I also know how much you miss each other..May I ask what play he will be doing this time?..
Claudia says
He will be doing The Seagull with the Huntington Theater Company. (My old stomping grounds.)
Janie F. says
Didn’t get to comment yesterday but I sure love the new art work Claudia and it looks right at home over the piano. Hope all goes well with the bed delivery and set up. May you and Don enjoy it and be rewarded with many nights of good refreshing sleep. Having so many ideas about how you want to change things up a bit should help the time to pass while Don is away but sure wish you had a helper with the snow shoveling. We have the a.c. on here in Fla. today but it barely comes on. Enjoy your day!
Claudia says
I sure wish I had a helper too. If it’s too overwhelming I may have to ask for snow blowing help from my neighbor, but I try to hold off on that unless it’s absolutely necessary.
Deb @ Frugal Little Bungalow says
The same happened here! We were to get some rain and snow ‘showers’ and ended up with 5-6 inches where I am / other areas around me got even more. The forecasters are not very accurate this year!
It is good that the mattress is coming between storms / sad that Don is going to be away in snow shoveling season. Seems to me that he’s away missing shoveling and you were away missing your flowers growing. I think he got the better end of the deal last year! :)
Claudia says
Last year he was away from the end of December through March. He missed out on most of the snow shoveling. This year, he will be away for at least part of the winter. Hmmmm…..
Kerrie says
Hi! I haven’t visited for awhile, sorry! The winter is passing pretty quickly for my first year back in snow country-ha! It has been a brutal winter so far though. Love your home and all the beautiful things you do with it!! I adore houses with nooks and crannies, step up or step down rooms, etc. So cool! I know you will be missing your hubby, hopefully he will not be gone too long? Hugs and happiness to you to warm your heart in the snowathon! :)
Claudia says
He’ll be gone for 2 months, Kerrie. We’ll hang in there, but it won’t be the same without him here. So good to hear from you, my friend.
Kerrie says
Awww! 2 months = 2 long!! I will be thinking of you! It will be a toughy! Big Hugs! ♥
Debbie says
Fingers crossed that everything goes perfectly with your bed delivery. I’m sorry Don has to be gone for so long, what kind of part will he be performing?
Claudia says
Shamraev in The Seagull, Debbie.
Dori says
Yay for the mattress coming soon! Boo for the snow! I so wish you could send some of that precip to the west coast.
Hang in there! Stay cosy!
Claudia says
We’d be happy to. I know you are suffering out there and I wish you could have some of our moisture!
Betsy says
New bed day! Yippee!!! I know how you feel about being away from Don. My Hubby and I are the same. Meanwhile, this time I’m the one who’s left. I drove to Portland, OR to take care of our granddaughter for a week. Hubby is left behind to work and shovel all the snow we’re getting in Spokane. I’m not a fan of this month so far either. I just hope it stops long enough this weekend for me to drive the 370 miles home. I’m not a snow driver especially along the icy Columbia river gorge. Hang in there Claudia.
Blessings,
Betsy
Claudia says
Stay safe, Betsy. I am not a fan of driving in the snow, either!
Janet Osness says
Dear Claudia,
I have been reading your blog for quite a while but have never commented.
I sailed on the Aquitania from Southampton to Halifax on January 21, 1948.
Train travel from Halifax to Toronto. The grand sum of the ocean crossing for my
mother and I was 87 pounds. I crossed the Atlantic twice more. Once to return
to England on the Queen Mary and then back to the U.S. on the S.S. United States.
I was nearly two for the first crossing and eleven for the final trip to the U.S.
We had a wonderful adventure from New York to Los Angeles on the Santa Fe
Super Chief. As an eleven year old it was grand. I have lived up and down the west ‘
coast and now reside in Seattle.
I enjoy your blog, and love your enchanting cottage. As for me it’s a mid entry in the
burbs. Thank you for the photo of your new addition above your piano.
Regards, Janet
Claudia says
Oh, Janet, I love hearing this story! May I share it with my readers this week? In my reading about the Aquitania, I learned that it often landed at Halifax and that the people of Halifax felt a real fondness for the ship.
Thank you for sharing this! xo
Janet Osness says
Thank you Claudia. Fine to share. It was a moment stepping back in time for me.
My hands were shaking as I found the receipt for this trip. I had always thought we
had sailed on the Aquitania and this was confirmation. My parents are both deceased
so it is not always easy to ascertain family histories.
Claudia says
What a treasure that receipt must be, Janet. So happy that you found it.
Melanie M says
Wow, sorry to hear about your impending storm! Our little Cocker Spaniel would try and push the snow with his nose – don’t know if he thought he was helping us shovel by making a trail or not! Maybe Scout could help? Safe travels to Don.
Claudia says
Scout loves to watch but that’s about it!
Balisha says
Hi Claudia…Loved this post…especially about your relationship with Don. Adapting to a new mattress isn’t always easy. Hope tonight finds you comfy in your new bed.
Balisha
Claudia says
It arrived and it sure seems comfy. It will be fun to try it out tonight, Balisha.
Trudy Mintun says
I love that you “sort of adore each other.” That is why you two can sleep in a small bed. That’s what makes a marriage work for so long. My husband and I are that way too. That’s not to say we don’t argue, because we do. Loud and angry arguments. But, 10 minutes later we are friends again. It is the best feeling in the world to be that much in love after all these years. We have been married almost 24 years.
Claudia says
Congratulations to you and your husband, Trudy. I used to think I would be bored by being with someone that long, but now I realize the exact opposite is true. The love deepens and it is far from boring!
Judy Clark says
Glad you got your bed – finally! How long will Don be gone this trip?
Stay warm.
Judy
Claudia says
He’ll be gone about 2 months, Judy.
Kelly says
Just wanting you to know that you have a nice kitchen window! Enjoy the beauty of the snow, we sure have had our share this winter. This is the kind of winter of my childhood, maybe not every year, but it’s how I remember it.
Claudia says
Mine too, Kelly. I remember lots and lots of snow, piles of it everywhere!
Dawn says
We got blasted with more snow last night too. At this point it looks like winter will never end. Will you keep the car while Don is gone? I sure hope so that is a long time to be without one.
Claudia says
It’s hard to imagine spring ever coming!
I have the car. Don took the train to Boston.
Haworth says
This snow thing is getting a little old, isn’t it, Claudia!? Honestly, I love the change of seasons but three storms in one week is a bit much, even for a born New Englander. Did you get a lot of sleet yesterday? Our snow was like wet cement by the time I was able to finally shovel. *sigh* I’m sorry you’re being parted again…. I hope you won’t have too much snow to clear away this weekend. x
Claudia says
I agree! Now it looks like we’ll just get an inch, if that, of snow on Sunday. Thank goodness!
Karen says
Claudia would you be willing to sell me a copy of the first pic on this post. I love the bright cathedral window and the shaded everything else. I would want to frame and hang it. If you are willing how much would it be for a not to large copy. Thanks Karen… its one of those things you talk about that you just cant forget.
Claudia says
Karen, your request is most flattering! I’ve never sold a photo before and I must be honest and say I’m not sure the quality is ready for matting and framing. If you’d like I can send you the jpeg and you are welcome to frame it. I wouldn’t charge you. Let me know.
Karen says
I would love it thank you!
