I’ve already screwed up and labeled this photo with 12/31 as the date.
It will take a while. New month, new year. (I’ve never be enamored of odd-numbered years.) I was born in an even-numbered year, I graduated from high school, college, and graduate school in even-numbered years. I met Don in an even-numbered year. I even married him in an even-numbered year. None of this was done with that in mind, but it does present a pattern, doesn’t it?
Yesterday, I got a text in the morning from the company manager saying she had found my sofa. By that, I mean the sofa that was in this apartment last year. She recognized it because I’d sent her a photo of it. (The rewards of blogging.) She happened to be in an apartment which had just been vacated by an actor in A Christmas Carol when she saw it. Later in the day, after I’d come back from rehearsal, she and her assistant took me to the apartment to ‘identify’ it.
Yep, that’s it! And, bless their hearts, after a long day for both of them, they switched out the sofas. Now, here’s the deal: it’s also squishy and missing any sort of support. It’s better than the other sofa, but I’m thinking that I’m going to have to shove a piece of wood under a cushion. I’ll get around it.
But doesn’t it look better than that old dark brown faux-leather sofa? It has a slightly smaller footprint, as well. And it lightens up the room. So I’m very happy. The chairs are staying as well, which makes for an intimate little seating area.
Do you say sofa or couch? I grew up saying ‘couch’ but I now say ‘sofa.’ Sort of like I grew up saying ‘pop’ and now I say ‘soda.’
Chairs, I might add, that were purchased a couple of years ago for Kevin Bacon’s dressing room when he was here starring in Rear Window. I didn’t know that little bit of information until yesterday.
It’s looking very nice in here and I’m enjoying what Don labels my “Mary Tyler Moore Life.” We were laughing last night about the fact that there is absolutely no wall space at home on which to hang my quilts. So the only chance I have to see them on display is when I come to my pied-à-terre in Hartford.
This is the first time I’ve been in Hartford on New Year’s Eve. They celebrate by having fireworks in the park at 6 pm and again at 12 am. I watched the 6 pm display from a window in the hallway of the apartment building and they were fabulous! Really beautiful. Bravo Hartford! (I heard the second round as I read in bed, and thankfully, I went to sleep before they had even finished.)
Today, more rehearsal and a run-through. Darko has accomplished so much in two weeks, it’s mind-boggling. It’s going to be a very funny show.
Then a day off tomorrow, with errands to run and laundry to do.
Happy New Year.
Happy Sunday.
Doris says
Happy New Year Claudia! Enjoy your day.
Claudia says
Happy New Year, Doris!
Linda @ A La Carte says
I like the new sofa better. I say both for some reason(sofa/couch). I’m home in bed with this cold and a pulled back but feeling more positive then in several days. It’s rainy and cold so a day in bed reading is a good way to greet the new year! Hoping you have a good day. Hugs!
Claudia says
Oh, poor you! You need to get well, now, Linda. No more running around – just take care of yourself!
Kathy says
I grew up calling it a couch but now say sofa. I’m not sure why! My grandmother always called it a Davenport. She was from the south so I don’t know if that’s a southern thing.
Claudia says
I don’t think it is, because I remember my parents saying davenport, also! Forgot about that one. Wonder where that name came from?
Carolyn Marie says
I say either sofa or couch; I can’t seem to take a stand!
In Minnesota most people say pop. To me, a soda has ice cream in it. Aren’t the regional differences in language fascinating? (Communications major here___I can’t help it!)
Happy New Year!
Claudia says
Midwest born and raised – that’s why I grew up saying ‘pop.’ Soda came into the picture when I moved out East for graduate school!
Happy New Year!
Laura C says
I say “couch” but when I was young many people called it a davenport, as Kathy said. This was in Western NY, so not just a southern thing. Your room looks beautiful!
Claudia says
No, and my parents and grandparents said it – and they were in Michigan by way of Canada!
Judy Shaw says
Happy New Year! We woke up to a blanket of snow today, the first in ages, and tomorrow it’s supposed to get very cold (for us). I still say pop but sometimes sofa and sometimes couch. Shades of the Midwest, I guess. Have a great day, and stay warm.
Claudia says
Yes, I think I still say couch occasionally – and Don says couch.
Donnamae says
My parents said Davenport also….hadn’t thought about that in eons! I was born in an odd numbered year, high school and college graduation odd also. But married in even year…two children odd…one even. Years…not children! But overall I prefer even numbered years…except for this one! I’m rooting for 2017! Enjoy your day! ;)
Claudia says
I’m rooting for 2017, too. Have a great day, Donnamae!
Alicia Tillman says
Dear Claudia
I want to wish you a happy new year full of health , work and love ! Take care!
xoxo Alicia , Buenos Aires
Claudia says
The same for you and your loved ones, Alicia. Happy New Year!
Mary says
Happy New Year. I think it is regional and probably one “was” correct. Sofa/couch/divan, rug/carpet , curtains/ drapes ,soda/pop/tonic, there must be more. There are right and wrong but by now who cares! I like the new or rather old couch better too.
Wendy T says
I use both terms but grew up with sofa. I’d say sofa more than couch. Your “new” sofa does look better…lightens up your MTM space. We went to bed around 1 am, after a rousing game of Cat-opoly. My late husband started the tradition of playing some version of Monopoly on New Year’s Eve when the girls were little and now it’s been every year. Busy day visiting family for lunch and dinner. I hope your day off includes some fun as well as your errands (though I find some errands fun). Wishing for the best in 2017 and the worst to stay behind.
Jay says
Happy New Year!
Odd or even I am looking forward to 2017. I hope it will be a very fine year for all.
Linda @ Itsy Bits And Pieces says
Happy New Year, Claudia! You know, I grew up saying couch, too, but I also call it a sofa now, I wonder if couch has become an old-fashioned word? Pop is very midwestern, so we still call it that…it’s funny that none of our family really drinks it at all anymore.
Looks like you are making your apartment a very cozy home away from home! Wishing you a great 2017…I also found 2016 to be a very difficult year and am ready for a fresh start! xo
Dianne says
I’m one of the sofa group; not sure why……but I’ve always thought sofa was a strange word not being able to see a root word or origin there; but couch seems odd too!……like the style and neutral color of your new/old sofa and something under the cushions may work fine.
Saw a quote that fits the upcoming year for me. A quote from St. Augustine: “Hope has two beautiful daughters. Their names are Anger and Courage. Anger at the way things are, and Courage to see they do not remain as they are.” Always comforting to see the wisdom of others that transcends time and speaks for now, too.
Wishing you and Don and all the family peace and happy times for the New Year……..Happy New Year Wishes, Dianne
Claudia says
My dictionary says, early 17th century, French, based on the Arabic, suffer – which some say meant bench. Hmmm.
I love that quote. Thank you so much. Happy New Year!
DONNA says
Happy New Year, dear Claudia!!! We used to have a “couch in the parlor” but I now have a sofa in the living room! LOL And there may have been someone in the family (although for the life of me I can’t remember who) that used the word divan, although our sofas always had arms, etc.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane! Have a wonderful week!
Claudia says
So many names for basically the same thing! Happy New Year, Donna!
Lea says
Happy New Year to you and Don. May 2017 be full of joy, good health and
lots of laughter.
I was quite taken back to read your comment about uneven numbers as I am
the same way. Born in an even month, even day and even year, may have
something to do with it. Married in an even year too.
I say couch and pop.
Claudia says
Another person like me! I just realized, however, that though I was born in an even year, the month and day of my birth are uneven! Happy New Year, Lea!
Janet in Rochester says
Well, our family always said “davenport” so I guess that’s another country heard from! Haha! I generally say sofa now though. And one of my grandparents said “Chesterfield” which I’ve never known anyone else use [unless I was watching an old movie]. Pouring, drenching sheets of rain last night when I was coming home from my sister’s annual New Year’s Eve munchies-and-games-night. This morning, bright sunshine & dry pavements – so 2017 already feels better than the old year. Here’s to THAT trend continuing. Happy New Year!! 🥂⭐️
Lynn says
Finally someone mentioned “chesterfield”! That’s what I call it, as well as couch…also “pop”. I think it’s a Canadian thing, as my American cousins always had a good giggle when I said Chesterfield. Happy New Year Claudia and Don, and enjoy your new sofa/couch/divan/davenport/chesterfield! 😊
Claudia says
Happy New Year, Lynn!
Claudia says
Chesterfields were popular in Britain – a very specific style of sofa – maybe it came from there? Happy New Year!
Dawn says
I love that little sitting area it just perfect and that sofa or couch looks just like mine. Another way to fix the cushions is to add cheap bed pillows under them (just a thought, and easier to haul around than a piece of lumber).
Here in the north we say couch and pop. I know soda is a southern term and my hubbies Grandma always said davenport for a couch. I think it has to do with the era you grew up in.
Happy New Year! I was in bed by 10, nothing happens here in my neck of the woods, lol.
Claudia says
Soda is also an Eastern term, Dawn. I started saying it when I moved to Pennsylvania.
Thanks so much for the tip on the pillows. Since I bring mine from home, I have some extras around here and I stuck them under the cushions. It works! xo
Margaret says
Couch growing up in Connecticut, now couch or sofa. Illinois mother-in-law said davenport.
Claudia says
I’m sure I flip back and forth between them all!
Chris K in Wisconsin says
I say couch. But I hear all 3 all of the time. Hope you have a good day of rehearsal and a productive day off tomorrow. I still can’t say “Happy New Year”….. too afraid. Seems like an oxymoron, with that moron in mind.
Claudia says
It IS an oxymoron, Chris!
Tammy says
Not sure what’s going on with your blog in my sidebar but every time I open it from there, even though you’ve published a new post, it opens up to Back in the Saddle; so I go to Meredith’s blog, find your blog in her sidebar, and then click on the name of your post, rather than your blog. Very strange. Anywho … I say couch. And don’t think I ever said pop or soda; just simply “what do you want to drink?” or Do you want a “coke”? Just like I tend to say “give me a Kleenex”, even though (like Coke) it’s a brand. I was in pajamas by 7 pm yesterday and in bed before midnight. Definitely not a party animal. :) Happy New Year!
Claudia says
Probably to do with your blogroll. The Blogger blogrolls have been very inconsistent with non-Blogger blogs (WP). Try clearing your cache. I had enough trouble this week with a plugin that was caching my content and was put on my blog by my host. I spent hours and hours clearing all that up and deleting it.
Maybe residual from that? But clearing your cache should do it – I always click on the post title on those blogrolls anyway. Or you can take me off your blogroll and re-enter the blog info. That will probably clear things up. Or when it takes you to last week’s post, reload the blog and the newest post will come up. All that is to say, there’s nothing I can do about it but I think it’s easily fixed.
Tammy, I just went to your blog roll and clicked on my blog and the newest post came up. It doesn’t seem to be a problem.
Happy New Year!
meredith says
Funny I am an odd number fan. I hate to cast on with even numbers it makes me feel all weird. Odd all the way!
Claudia says
But you were born in an even year. Hmmmm. Love you, sister.
Monica says
Sofa, pop, & supper. I was born in southern WV. I don’t say pop anymore, but I do use sofa & supper just like couch & dinner. That couch looks a lot better.
Happy & healthy New Year to you and Don.p
Monica
Claudia says
It does look a lot better, doesn’t it? Thanks so much, Monica. Happy New Year!
Monica says
I have no clue as to how or why the p
landed after Don’s name. I’m using my phone, maybe that’s it. Sorry.
M
Claudia says
Oh gosh, that happens to me all the time! Don’t worry about it.
Betsy says
I say couch and soda as does everyone I know that has been born and is still in CT! I think it’s so cool that you have Kevin Bacon’s dressing room chairs. I saw him in Rear Window last year. Cool scenery and costumes in that play. He lives in Sharon, CT some of the time and I wonder if he calls a couch a sofa. Your apartment looks so homey it makes me want to visit. Lucky you- able to see the fireworks without fighting traffic. We have tickets for Comedy of Errors on Jan. 29. Can’t wait. Happy new year!
Claudia says
I wish I’d seen Rear Window. I couldn’t get there during the run but I heard how good it was. Brace yourself, Betsy, Comedy of Errors is going to be wacky!
Nancy in PA says
Claudia, I think that gives you one degree of separation from Kevin Bacon, and now we readers are two degrees of separation from him. Thank you!
;-)
Claudia says
You’re welcome!
Lily says
Happy New Year, Claudia!
The new sofa/couch looks much nicer. The whole room looks quite cozy with your beautiful quilt being the focal point. I love those chairs too. I grew up saying couch, but now I say both. I say couch for the one in our den and sofa for the prettier one in the living room. For some reason couch sounds more casual to me, and sofa sounds more refined.
We say both dinner or supper here for our late in the day main meal. My grandparents, back in the day, called lunch supper. Supper was their biggest meal of the day too. It was a meal that sustained them while they finished the day’s work on their farm.
And no one ever says soda around here. Only pop for us, which I rarely drink due to it being empty calories. But in my opinion, there’s nothing better on a sore throat than a cold Sprite!
Claudia says
I think you’re right, Lily. Couch sounds more casual.
My grandparents also called lunch supper – my grandmother was raised on a farm where lunch was supper and the biggest meal of the day, and that word stuck.
I never drink soda or pop! I haven’t had any of that stuff for a long time! But I do love some Vernor’s Ginger Ale and if I was offered some, I’d drink it.
Deb says
I’m from CT so couch here but more importantly there’s a new Sherlock on tonight! How did I miss this? Another showing on CPTV at 10:36 PM that I’ll DVR. I’m so excited!
Deb
Claudia says
I knew it was going to be on and reminded Don to watch it, too. Very good and shocking, as well!
Nancy Blue Moon says
I grew up with couch or davenport but now use couch or sofa…I like Lilly’s theory about couch being more casual and sofa being more refined…very clever Lilly…and pop but I recall also using the term “soda pop”…it is interesting how people in different regions use different words for the same things…also lunch and supper…Happy New Year everyone…I hope!
Claudia says
Yes, interesting that soda pop (the proper name or original name for it) evolved into either ‘soda’ or ‘pop’ – words are fascinating!
