Sort of a Chatty Post

September 21, 2012 at 8:47 am by Claudia

Is it time to take down that coffee filter wreath? I’m thinking it is.

I want a real stair runner for those stairs – something from, say, Dash & Albert. When Riley and Scout were still sleeping upstairs with us and Riley began to be a bit unsure about his footing, we hastily tacked down those mini carpets for the treads. I tried to make them colorful yet funky by alternating a red one with a blue one.

I’m sick of them.

And every year, I look at the walls in this house, which were given only one coat of paint when this house was flipped, and get the urge to paint all of it. There are lots of dings and cracks and paint marks from furniture being moved up the stairs. I just never show them to you. When fall comes around and I see the amount of moths and bugs coming into the house lessen (we live in the country), I think now’s the time.

Then I get overwhelmed. Because I will be the painter. And there are a lot of walls. And the kitchen cupboards need to be painted. Even the kitchen island needs to be touched up.

I hate painting walls.

Maybe if I just start in one little area and do a little bit each day?

Still overwhelmed.

The view out our car window as we drove into town the other day – the day we found my Featherweight. Don’t we have  pretty mountains?

So many of you are flannel pajamas lovers. That makes me smile. And yes, flannel nighties count as well. Someone mentioned flannel sheets, but the funny thing is though I love my flannel pajamas, wear them in the morning and in the evening and other times of the day, I don’t wear them to bed. I tend to run hot. And it’s not due to menopause, which is, thankfully, over. Flannel sheets make me hot. Flannel pajamas while sleeping would send me up the wall. Don, on the other hand, runs cold and always has piles of covers over him.

By the way, I’m trying to reply to any questions that you’ve asked in your comments – right there under your comment. Since I have threaded comments now, it’s so much easier to do that. So, if you ask a question, check back. Maybe we can eventually get a dialogue going and I will respond to more than just questions. I see that on other blogs and I like the back-and-forth. I’ve not found a plug-in that I like that will allow subscribing to comments, so for the time being, if you are so inclined, check back.

Speaking of plug-ins, Brenda and I found one that will show the latest blog posts on our blogrolls (like Blogger has.) I like it so much more because I often read your blogs that way. It shows the post title and the amount of time that has elapsed since the blog was updated. The only problem? All Typepad blogs show that update as ’42 years ago.’ I’m not kidding. I don’t know why. It makes me laugh. So if you have a Typepad blog and you’re on my blogroll, my apologies.

Our elusive male cardinal made an appearance and I ran for my camera. I would have been able to get an even better picture had Miss Scout not decided to start barking at that moment. I love our cardinals.

Okay. That’s all for now. Stay tuned. I will post A Favorite Thing tonight at 8:00 pm EST.

Happy Friday.

That’s what happens to me: I grab the camera and the wild barking begins. I love your floors in your house. I love your house period. Since I’m not much of a painter, I put quilts on the wall… And yes, what I’d give to see your mountains everyday.

I hear ya on the painting. Yes, pick a small area and start there. Once you get going it seems it’s not so daunting, but starting is the hard part. Day 1: Get supplies together and prep walls. Day 2: Paint. Don’t forget to wear an old pair of flannel jammy pants – comfort is the key.

Oh I wish we had cardinals here… lucky you! A cardinal in teeny flannel jammy pants… now wouldn’t that be cute! :)

The same thing happened in our house. It was flipped and I think the paint was sprayed on the walls. We have started painting a little at a time though. I can’t stand to paint walls either! Ugh! We are doing a wall at a time. One more in the living room and then on to the hallway, then the kitchen. Not sure if it will get done this year or not. As for flannels, I wear flannel bottoms around the house. Sometimes it feels so good to get those jeans off and slip into a pair of flannel bottoms and a tee shirt! ~Hugs, Patti

I love your chatty posts! I like flannel but here in the south it’s pretty hot most of the time and the MR likes the house to warm for me. I have a big flannel gown I love to wear around the house but never sleep in…just too hot. The birds have been very active in our yard this week. Fall makes them frisky??? hugs, Linda

Yeah, painting can seem over whelming. I vote for the little at a time approach. But, having said that, I’m the type that once it starts, I MUST finish, and get things put back. Love your cardinal. He looks like he has been eating well! We have many cardinals in San Antonio.

Oh my, painting…best advice…just start, and when you see how great the result will be, you’ll just become a painting fool!! I can’t wear my flannels to bed either…but I could live in them, given the opportunity. ;)

One project at a time! I start thinking about all that needs to be done and end up doing nothing. I find cleaning even goes better for me if I only tackle one room at a time.

My parents and grandparents lived in an old two-story farmhouse in a small town. They had several trees in the yard and loved to feed the birds. I miss the colorful birds. We have wrens, sparrows, starlings and crows in this barren apartment complex. Once in a blue moon I’ll see a bluejay. Sigh…

I used to have a pair of flannel jammies that my husband called my “cast iron pajamas”. He also called them my porcupine suit. They were cozy and warm, but not conducive to romance.

I now have a pair of fleece pants that I wear (not to bed) when I want to be cozy. It sure helps when it gets chilly here in SE Alaska!

    Ola Claudia!

About the painting thing … once you get started, there’s nothing to it. I find it kind of therapeutic. I’ve made some of the best decisions of my life while lost in painting, lol!

Hello Claudia, I’m sorry you can’t “do” the flannel sheets.. I find them so cozy that I don’t want to get out of bed in the morning.. I’m very cold natured and even wear socks to bed.. ;o)

I used to love to paint and probably still would.. I’m in my early 70’s and have a situation with my right shoulder.. I had surgery on a torn rotator cuff back in 1990 and that darned shoulder is acting up now.. I’m trying to figure out the best way I could use a paint roller~~~~whether a short one or one on a long pole..
All of my walls need to be painted. The last time they got painted, I did it.. I know they would look so much nicer freshly done. Having someone to come in and paint for me would cost an arm and a leg. I see so many lovely rooms in the homes of the gals with blogs..

I love your staircase. I can just see it decorated for Christmas. It’s soooo nice and your floors are gorgeous.. Oh, to live in the country and see mountains like you show.. I have lots of cardinals here in Virginia~~~~both the males and females.. They are such beautiful birds..

    Have a lovely weekend..

Oh Charlotte, painting is hard no matter what, but especially if you have a shoulder acting up! Don’t even try right now.

I love new paint – it changes everything! Do the easiest room first so when you’re finished, you think “wow, that wasn’t that bad!” LOL! Put on some good, rocking music and go girl!!

It’s not the actual painting with me, it’s the actually starting to paint. Whenever I get ready to star after it, something else catches my eye and off I go! When I painted my living room I started out doing one wall at a time. That was all I scheduled myself for. Once I got going, I would always do a little more that one and it worked. out.

    Have a good weekend. :)

Claudia – Your mountains are BEAUTIFUL!! I have so much painting to do and just can’t get started because I know that once I start, there will be no place to stop. But, I will get started soon – maybe, possibly, or probably not!!

I am so with you on the flannel jammies. Love them until it is time for bed and then they are way too hot. I’ve always like to paint when the weather cools down just enough so I can keep the windows open to air out the paint smell.

    Hugs,
    Laura

I still have some walls to paint, too, Claudia. In the kitchen and in my bedroom. I find they go quickly unless there are a lot of windows and doorways, which of course there always are in a small cottage! Oh! and I *hate* flannel sheets. As cold as I might feel at night, I need real percale or cotton sheets in the bed. I hope you have a comfy weekend. Take care! I’m about to send you the link for the Favorite Thing party. *(This time I promise to do it corretly!)*

Claudia I’ve been painting my main living area since spring! I usually move the furniture from one wall paint and move/put back everything for that wall and then as I have time I just keep doing one wall at a time. I’ve been stuck on my hallway since the summer but as soon as I’m done planting stuff I’ll be back to painting. Anyway, just wanted you to know that you don’t have to do it all at once!

Ugh, I hate painting walls too… and I just won’t do it. I do a sloppy job anyway, so husband is fine with that. You know, if you look at the job at hand as just one wall at a time, maybe it won’t be so bad. And don’t beat yourself up to get it all done immediately.

Thanks for the tips, everyone! Since I’m painting the walls pretty much the same color they already are, there will be no dramatic changes. But I was thinking about doing just one wall at a time and you’ve confirmed that idea!

Painting walls would be so much nicer if we did it in a team.

I’ve been thinking of painting our bathroom for months. At least I have come to a decision which colour to use. I should fit the greenish happiness!

I know what you mean about seeing all the dings and scrapes on the walls. They make me a bit crazy, too. We’ve been doing some fluffing around here. I hope to be “kind of” finished soon, and I will share.

They TypePad issue makes me laugh. It looks like I was awfully busy blogging 42 years ago. Anyway, you know I am an everyday blogger.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
