Strange Snow

January 24, 2016 at 9:26 am by Claudia

1-24 snow in park

What a strange storm this was. So many areas of the East have been hit with huge amounts of snow. Others have very little accumulation. As it was, the snow didn’t start falling here until mid-to-late afternoon, much later than predicted. I was able to get to the library and back with no snow except for the occasional flake. The museum, where I planned on spending a few hours, had to decided to close, surely thinking the snow would start falling much earlier than it did.

By the time it started to come down heavily, it had become very windy. Instead of partaking, I stayed inside.

Don had stocked up on food and supplies. He also ran to buy some coffee yesterday morning, after having woken up in the middle of the night with the realization that he had none on hand. He waited all day for the snow to start falling.

No snow. Not one bit. The cottage remains snow-free.

I, having found out late in the day that I didn’t have to be at rehearsal today, realized I could have driven home yesterday. But really, who knew? I expected that the snow would start any minute, as did Don. And I sure didn’t want to be caught in a snowstorm while driving home. Better safe than sorry.

Mother Nature is only so predictable, right? She likes to keep us guessing.

So I spent a cozy day in the apartment and sat out the storm. We had about 4 or 5 inches of snow here, not all that much. I watched figure skating on the tube, I crocheted. (New scarf in the shop, by the way.) I read. I ate.  I talked to Don on the phone.

Taken from the apartment window. I do love the sight of snow falling in the glow of city lights. And I sure like not having to shovel!

So. Today, I’m headed home. I’m not sure when. I’m going to wait until the sun has a been out a while and the roads are clearer than they are at the moment. I’ll come back Monday or Tuesday, depending on what the rehearsal call for Tuesday is. I don’t like coming back at the last minute.

I’m going to do my best to relieve Don of his Scout Duties while I’m there. He needs a bit of a break.

I hope those of you who were caught in the worst of this storm take it easy – don’t overdo. It’s Sunday. Relax and shovel a bit at a time. Have hot chocolate. Watch a movie.

Happy Sunday.

So glad that you are okay and that the storm was not too terrible in your area. Very happy that Don and Scout were spared as well. I thought about you yesterday. The images on the American TV channels were absolutely horrifying. Sure glad it isn’t due to come north to our neck of the woods!
Stay safe and have a good trip home.

It wasn’t nearly as bad up here. We are lucky. So many are without power and having to clean up mounds of snow!

So happy you are getting to go home. Safe travels my friend. We had a sprinkle of snow and then the sun came out. So many to the North of us got hit hard and lost power. I snuggled in to watch ice skating and drank tea and used my essential oils infuser. I am finally feeling a bit better. Hopefully on the mend. Hugs to you and I know you will enjoy time at home. Sweet Scout will enjoy seeing her mama.
    hugs,
    Linda

Thank you, Cindy. By the way, I’m working on the dark pink scarf. Then I’ll make the gray scarf. Soon!

Happy to hear you can go home! Tell Don he prevented the snow, because he made that last trip to get coffee! That trick has been known to work around here! Stay warm…and travel safe! ;)

Not one bit of snow on the ground here. Just south of the cottage there’s a dusting.

Eighteen inches here in my part of West Virginia. It’s absolutely beautiful now that the danger is gone. It’s so eerily quiet when the snow is pouring down and there is no traffic on the roads. Today, the sun is brightly shining and the roads have cleared but there is still a lot of shoveling to be done.

I’m going to do just as you suggest and hang out on the couch with hot chocolate, crocheting and Netflix. :-)

Prayers of safe travels as you venture home.

Wow, you got a lot of snow, LesleyAnn! I love it when there are no cars on the road and it’s quiet and snowy!

Hi Claudia, I’m happy that you will be able to spend a little time with your two loves! I’m just popping over to tell you that you MUST get a copy of Mary Norris’ book Between You and Me: Confessions of a Comma Queen, or even better, get a recording of her reading it. I was listening to it in the car early yesterday and had to pull over when she started talking about moving cars for street cleaning. It is hilarious—at least I think it is, with subtle dry wit. She was copy editor for The New Yorker for many years, where she started working in 1978. I thought of you immediately as I listened and wished I could hear your take on this. I want to know if it is just me, or if one must have lived in NYC or owned a car there or studied Latin or put in time as a proofreader/editor/spellchecker to really appreciate it. (In my life as a first year wall street attorney I spent many hours doing these things!). I hope you will read or listen to this and let me know what you think! I’m only about a third of the way through, but I’m saving it to savor every chapter. Hope you have a wonderful trip home. Linda

I’ve heard of that book, Linda, and I think I read a short interview with the author. Thank you so much for reminding me about it. I’m going to put it on my list, STAT!

Short, but sweet. About 24 hours. Scoutie is groggy but she recognized me. She really is out of it these days, which makes us sad. Don will make dinner and I am going to demand (nicely) a back rub!

I’m SO glad you get to go home to Don and Scout even if it’s only for a day…or two. Mandy ended up with two feet of snow but they didn’t lose their electricity which was what they were most concerned about. They’re digging out today and she actually said it was kind of nice having an enforced weekend at home. :-). Drive safely.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

Glad to hear the snow wasn’t bad at your apartment nor at home, so that you’ll be able to go home for a day or two. I know you will be glad to see Don and Scout and I’m sure they’ll be glad to have you home for a bit, too.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
