Stray Kitten and Advice, Please?

August 27, 2009 at 11:21 am by Claudia

I heard mewing this morning while I was blogging – loud, plaintive mewing coming from the area beside the porch. I went out to investigate and after searching found this little one hiding in amongst the plants. Just a baby…we’re unsure what to do…any ideas? We placed some water, milk and wet dog food out because she was so hungry. (We’ll definitely go buy some kitten food.) She’s very skittish and won’t come to us. But she is definitely hanging around.

We can’t take her in because Scout hates cats – and I am allergic. Should we try to catch her and take her to a shelter? I’m afraid for her out here in the country with no protection. She’s about 5 or 6 inches long – I have no idea what age that indicates.

Don said maybe she’ll adopt us and be an outdoor cat. But I hate the thought of her being unprotected – we live on a busy road.

She’s adorable. I’d love any advice. We don’t know a lot about cats, but we love animals.

    Claudia,
I contacted a friend of mine who is a vet in New Paltz. IF you wanted to keep her, she would advise taking her in to be tested for AIDS and leukemia. Also, depending on her age, she may need kitten milk replacer from the pet store. If you are not keeping her, here are the numbers of the local cat shelters: Diana’s Cat Shelter 626-0221 or Newburgh SPCA 564-6810. Wish I could take her…she’s so darn cute!

    Hi Claudia,
I wish I could help, but we’ve always been adopted ourselves by adult cats. I just want to wish you well in whatever your decision is to keep her or take her to a shelter. I’m sure you’re already well aware, but you know me… I have to say it… make sure if you take her to a shelter that’s a non-kill shelter. Maybe one of your neighbors would be interested in keeping her if you’re unable to. Best fuzzy wishes to you. You are so sweet for caring for her and taking the time to ask for help. Animal people are the best!
    Let us know what happens.

Oh Claudia what a sweet little thing. I don’t think she is much older than 6 weeks, still really a baby. Maybe she lost her home and is trying to find it. You could put some pictures on neighbourhood trees. Somebody could be looking for it. And please don’t give a cat milk, she might get diarrhoea

Claudia, try to catch her (good luck) maybe then take her to a no kill shelter.Sometimes they will come pick up stray animal too? I’m sure they could find her a home. She’s awfully cute! Traci

Oh, what a sweet little face! What a difficult place to be in, Claudia!

I wonder if she belongs to someone in your neighborhood? Perhaps knocking on a few doors might produce an owner. If not and you can’t keep her, I agree that a non-kill shelter is the only safe solution for this little bundle.

I think if you sit with some nice soft wet kitty food, she might be hungry enough to come close enough for you to catch her . . . I’d have a kennel or some such thing at the ready!

Good luck and please let us know the outcome!

    Blessings,
    Teresa

Oh, Claudia, she is so sweet. I see you’ve been given excellent advise already.

We have several cats in our neighborhood and I’m always worried about them getting hit . . . .

    Keep us posted.

    Hugs,
    Marsha

I notice we all keep referring to her as ‘she’….have you checked?

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
