We were feeling a bit restless yesterday and it seemed to be the perfect time for a Sunday Drive. Remember Sunday Drives when you were a kid? Don and I used to do this sort of thing fairly often, but we’ve been lax lately. So, off we went, not sure at all where we were headed.
First stop: we ended up at our new favorite antique emporium.
I’m in love with this industrial looking cubby with the hairpin legs. I posted it on IG a week or so ago and it’s still there.
Oh heavens. Roseville jardinieres and matching pedestals. It’s rare to find both the pot and the pedestal intact. On the left: Clematis. On the right: Peony. Did I want them? Yes. Could I afford them? No. Would they be knocked over almost immediately upon entering our home? Most likely.
Imagine getting your hair permed with this electrified contraption. Horrors!
I saw many things I wanted, of course. This is a great shop (in a former Joann’s Fabric store) and it’s filled with very high quality vintage items. Not the sort of junky stuff I’ve been seeing lately in other shops. Lots of architectural salvage and industrial and pottery and regular old antiques. We really love it there.
We then crossed the Hudson River.
It was a gorgeous day. Those little white specks are sailboats.
And stopped at one of our favorite towns, Beacon, NY.
We hadn’t been there for a while and there are lots of new businesses and galleries and shops. Beacon is rather trendy – a couple of years before the time we were looking for a house, Beacon became an up and coming town for NYC transplants. People were buying old houses for a song and renovating them. We looked at houses in Beacon. It’s closer to NYC and is a stop on the Hudson Line, making for an easy (and less time consuming) commute. But we just missed the boom and the affordable prices, so we started to look further north.
It has a wonderful art museum, the DIA.
We found a great little restaurant and grabbed some lunch.
Had to grab a picture of the tile floors in the bathroom. My favorite design. It reminds me of my bathroom in Cambridge, MA, all those years ago. Not quite the same, but close.
We had veggie burgers and fries. Really, really tasty. That’s Don’s hand and wrist (upper right) after I told him to stop grabbing fries so I could get a picture.
Don’t worry. We were back at it rather quickly.
Six months ago today, we lost our little girl. It’s a very sad anniversary.
Don’t forget to leave a comment here if you want to be considered for the coloring book giveaway. The deadline is at 8 pm tonight.
Happy Monday.
Doris says
I have never seen a hair contraption like that! Double ouch! Sounds like a fun day.
Claudia says
It looks like some torture contraption, doesn’t it?
Linda @ A La Carte says
What a fun day! I love Sunday drives. I really love that cubby and those Roseville pieces are gorgeous. Six months since we lost our babies, I know we miss them everyday. My last afternoon with Tiger since he starts school tomorrow. I think we will do something special, maybe a movie!
hugs,
Linda
Claudia says
It’s hard to believe it’s been six months, Linda! How can that be? Have fun today with Tiger!
Vera says
What a lovely Sunday you had Claudia! And that perm contraption? Yikes!!! Monday came too soon for me this week.
Claudia says
Mondays often come too soon, Vera. Have a good day!
Shanna says
Those jardinieres! My Grandma had one (without the pedestal) that was so similar…I bet it was Roseville! It held a palm tree in her living room. I wonder who has it now? I love to browse antique shops and try not to buy anything. All too often I succumb. I had to give my baby a hug because I’m sorry that you are missing Scout, but of course you are. Hugs to you, as well.
Claudia says
I didn’t buy anything, Shanna! I was proud of myself!
Thanks for your kind thoughts about Scout.
Christine says
Love, love, love your shoes!
Claudia says
Thank you, Christine. I love red shoes!
Vicki says
I love it when you include us on an area excursion…it’s just wonderful to see the locale. Thank you!
Claudia says
You’re welcome, Vicki!
Debbie says
My grandmother used to tell us that she would get her hair permed with one of those contraptions back in the 1920s…I still can’t believe she wasn’t electrocuted!
I enjoyed seeing pictures of Beacon. When I was a kid we used to take Sunday drives and go on picnics. One of our favorite places to go was Beacon. We drove to Newburgh, took the ferry to Beacon (this was before the bridges were built) and rode the incline train up a steep hill overlooking the river. There was a picnic area there where we ate & spent the afternoon.
Claudia says
You know, there’s still a ferry to Beacon. Plenty of commuters park in Newburgh and take the ferry across the Hudson River, Debbie.
Judy Clark says
I vividly remember Mom and Dad loading all four of us girls in the back seat of our old car and going for Sunday afternoon drives. No where in particular – just drive. Looks like you and Don had a great afternoon just goofing off. Good for you!
Have a wonderful Monday.
Judy
Claudia says
Goofing off is something everyone needs to do every once in a while, Judy. xo
Cathy S. says
We love Sunday (or any day) drives. My husband and I do that a lot, usually stopping along the way for an ice cream or a cup of coffee and a ‘treat’. Have a wonderful Monday.
Claudia says
We stopped for a lunch treat! It was a lovely day.
Susan says
My parents and I often took Sunday afternoon drives. It was a little ritual for us. I miss it. I envy you being able to shop for antiques on a Sunday. All the little shops here are closed on Sunday afternoons. The independent restaurants close early too. Small town life in the South. I fondly remember taking the train up to Cold Spring when I lived in NYC. Such pretty little towns along the Hudson.
Big Texas Hugs,
Susan and Bentley
Claudia says
Very few things around here close on a Sunday, Susan!
Wendy T says
Wandering is probably one of the best ways to deal with a broken heart. Let the adventure take you away for a little while. Big hugs, Claudia.
Claudia says
It just helps to ‘get away’ for a while, Wendy. A change of scenery is always a good thing.
Donnamae says
I love Sunday drives…they always seem to refresh my spirit! Beautiful jardinieres…cute shoes too! And I love that floor! ;)
Claudia says
It sure refreshed our spirits, Donnamae!
Kathy says
I remember going on Sunday drives when I was a kid. Sometimes we would stop for homemade raspberry ice cream before going home. My husband and I occasionally go for Sunday drives. Not as much as we should though.
Claudia says
Homemade raspberry ice cream sounds awfully tasty, Kathy!
Janie F. says
HI Claudia, sounds like you and Don had a fun day on Sunday. It’s raining here and a little cooler today. I am answering phones this week for a relative’s business. Very quiet so I’m coloring, reading and thumbing through old magazines.
Claudia says
Very nice of you to help out, Janie! I’m glad it’s a bit cooler there today.
Beverly says
We both love Sunday drives.♥ Now that we are both retired, we sometimes do weekday drives while everyone is at work. Makes for much less traffic.
Claudia says
We do that a lot, too. Especially in this area which has a lot of New Yorkers up here on any given weekend. I tend to do anything that involves visiting a town or running a big errand during the week for that same reason.
Nancy in PA says
Dear Claudia and Don,
Thinking of you and all of your fur-babies.
A change of scene is a good thing when in a funk. I hope the pretty sky and water views helped to lift your spirits.
xoxoxox
Claudia says
It did help. Now it’s back to the usual, Nancy. Which makes today a bit difficult given that it’s the six month anniversary.
Mamey says
Sometimes its just nice to get in the car and see where you end up. No intention or plan, it’s a great Sunday thing to do. Looks like you had a lovely day!
Claudia says
We did, Mamey. And then we came home and read the Sunday New York Times. Very nice!
Janet in Rochester says
Flashback!! I remember my paternal grandmother telling me about those electric hair contraptions when I was little. Grandma had actually worked for a short time before she got married – in the mid 20s – in a “beauty parlor.” I don’t think she ever operated one of those scary-looking deals, but she did comment on them from time to time. And whenever she did, her son, my smart-aleck Army veteran Dad, would always grin & ask her “So Mom, how many killed & wounded with that thing?” From the looks of them, I had to agree with my Dad. There MUST have been casualties – yikes. But Grandma would always shoo my Dad away and start talking about “marcel waves.”
Claudia says
I’d have to agree with your dad, too, Janet. The whole thing looks like an accident waiting to happen!
Alicia Tillman says
Dear Claudia
Glad to know you were having a trip together , it’s good for the spirit! They’re very nice places indeed! As usual reading your posts every day despite not leaving comments for a long time .Sorry for that.Remembering Scout every single day she’s always in my heart the same as Riley is.Send you a kiss and take care!
Alicia,Buenos Aires
Claudia says
Thank you so much, Alicia!
Betsy says
Dear Claudia,
I have the Roseville peony jardiniere and pedestal! It was my great grandmother’s. I keep it tucked in a corner with my husband’s great grandmother’s Christmas cactus in the jardiniere. I had no idea it was worth anything.
That type of tile always reminds me of hexies!
Beautiful day!
Betsy
Claudia says
If it’s in good condition, Betsy, it’s worth a LOT of money! Lucky you!
Betsy says
It is in very good condition! May I should sell it so we can retire some day! I just noticed that the peony jardinière in the picture above is set on a clematis pedestal. Good thing you didn’t buy it!
Claudia says
I noticed that, too – this morning. I was going to put that bit of info in today’s post, but I ran out of time!
Chris K in Wisconsin says
Love Sunday drives…… love a fun drive most any day!! Looks like you had fun.
The first thing I thought of when I saw those jardinieres was that they would never survive a week here! They are pretty!
Another HOT week here. 88* tomorrow and 90’s on Wed – Fri. The humidity is already in the air. ugh. Hope you had a great day!
Claudia says
It’s hot here, as well, Chris. 89 yesterday, hotter today! And we went for a trail walk – go figure!
Nancy Blue Moon says
What wonderful weather you had for a Sunday drive Claudia…I should have thought of it myself…a drive and browsing an antique mall would have been good for my nerves…Of course I would have to go it alone now but that’s something I need to get used to..I will always remember Scout..she was a special little lady..Hugs
Claudia says
She was a magical girl, Nancy.
