Sunday Drive

August 8, 2016 at 9:37 am by Claudia

We were feeling a bit restless yesterday and it seemed to be the perfect time for a Sunday Drive. Remember Sunday Drives when you were a kid? Don and I used to do this sort of thing fairly often, but we’ve been lax lately. So, off we went, not sure at all where we were headed.

First stop: we ended up at our new favorite antique emporium.

8-8 favoritecubby

I’m in love with this industrial looking cubby with the hairpin legs. I posted it on IG a week or so ago and it’s still there.

8-8 rosevillepedastals

Oh heavens. Roseville jardinieres and matching pedestals. It’s rare to find both the pot and the pedestal intact. On the left: Clematis. On the right: Peony. Did I want them? Yes. Could I afford them? No. Would they be knocked over almost immediately upon entering our home? Most likely.

8-8 permhorror

Imagine getting your hair permed with this electrified contraption. Horrors!

I saw many things I wanted, of course. This is a great shop (in a former Joann’s Fabric store) and it’s filled with very high quality vintage items. Not the sort of junky stuff I’ve been seeing lately in other shops. Lots of architectural salvage and industrial and pottery and regular old antiques. We really love it there.

We then crossed the Hudson River.

8-8 hudsonriver

It was a gorgeous day. Those little white specks are sailboats.

And stopped at one of our favorite towns, Beacon, NY.

8-8 beacon

We hadn’t been there for a while and there are lots of new businesses and galleries and shops. Beacon is rather trendy – a couple of years before the time we were looking for a house, Beacon became an up and coming town for NYC transplants. People were buying old houses for a song and renovating them. We looked at houses in Beacon. It’s closer to NYC and is a stop on the Hudson Line, making for an easy (and less time consuming) commute. But we just missed the boom and the affordable prices, so we started to look further north.

It has a wonderful art museum, the DIA.

We found a great little restaurant and grabbed some lunch.

8-8 tilefloor

Had to grab a picture of the tile floors in the bathroom. My favorite design. It reminds me of my bathroom in Cambridge, MA, all those years ago. Not quite the same, but close.

8-8 fries

We had veggie burgers and fries. Really, really tasty. That’s Don’s hand and wrist (upper right) after I told him to stop grabbing fries so I could get a picture.

Don’t worry. We were back at it rather quickly.

Six months ago today, we lost our little girl. It’s a very sad anniversary.

Don’t forget to leave a comment here if you want to be considered for the coloring book giveaway. The deadline is at 8 pm tonight.

Happy Monday.

What a fun day! I love Sunday drives. I really love that cubby and those Roseville pieces are gorgeous. Six months since we lost our babies, I know we miss them everyday. My last afternoon with Tiger since he starts school tomorrow. I think we will do something special, maybe a movie!

Those jardinieres! My Grandma had one (without the pedestal) that was so similar…I bet it was Roseville! It held a palm tree in her living room. I wonder who has it now? I love to browse antique shops and try not to buy anything. All too often I succumb. I had to give my baby a hug because I’m sorry that you are missing Scout, but of course you are. Hugs to you, as well.

My grandmother used to tell us that she would get her hair permed with one of those contraptions back in the 1920s…I still can’t believe she wasn’t electrocuted!
I enjoyed seeing pictures of Beacon. When I was a kid we used to take Sunday drives and go on picnics. One of our favorite places to go was Beacon. We drove to Newburgh, took the ferry to Beacon (this was before the bridges were built) and rode the incline train up a steep hill overlooking the river. There was a picnic area there where we ate & spent the afternoon.

You know, there’s still a ferry to Beacon. Plenty of commuters park in Newburgh and take the ferry across the Hudson River, Debbie.

I vividly remember Mom and Dad loading all four of us girls in the back seat of our old car and going for Sunday afternoon drives. No where in particular – just drive. Looks like you and Don had a great afternoon just goofing off. Good for you!

    Have a wonderful Monday.

My parents and I often took Sunday afternoon drives. It was a little ritual for us. I miss it. I envy you being able to shop for antiques on a Sunday. All the little shops here are closed on Sunday afternoons. The independent restaurants close early too. Small town life in the South. I fondly remember taking the train up to Cold Spring when I lived in NYC. Such pretty little towns along the Hudson.

We do that a lot, too. Especially in this area which has a lot of New Yorkers up here on any given weekend. I tend to do anything that involves visiting a town or running a big errand during the week for that same reason.

Flashback!! I remember my paternal grandmother telling me about those electric hair contraptions when I was little. Grandma had actually worked for a short time before she got married – in the mid 20s – in a “beauty parlor.” I don’t think she ever operated one of those scary-looking deals, but she did comment on them from time to time. And whenever she did, her son, my smart-aleck Army veteran Dad, would always grin & ask her “So Mom, how many killed & wounded with that thing?” From the looks of them, I had to agree with my Dad. There MUST have been casualties – yikes. But Grandma would always shoo my Dad away and start talking about “marcel waves.”

    Dear Claudia,
I have the Roseville peony jardiniere and pedestal! It was my great grandmother’s. I keep it tucked in a corner with my husband’s great grandmother’s Christmas cactus in the jardiniere. I had no idea it was worth anything.
That type of tile always reminds me of hexies!
    Beautiful day!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
