Sunday was lovely. We took an impromptu drive, heading west over the Shawangunk Ridge. The ‘Gunks’ as the locals say. They are a continuation of the Appalachian Mountains and we are blessed with a view of them from our property.
We stopped at a viewing point and took this photo. The mountains you can see in the distance are the Catskills. We drove through some lovely little towns, as we observed the leaves changing color in the autumn light. It was nice to take a drive together for no other reason than to have a little adventure. We miss our road trips. One of the things I love the most is a road adventure with my husband, like the time we drove back home from California. We’re due for another big adventure but that will have to wait until we can afford it. In the meantime, these little mini adventures help put everything in perspective and we return home happy and relaxed.
The last couple of autumns have seemed to start earlier than in the past. We’re not even done with September and there are a lot of leaves on the ground! It’s amazing how quickly the seasonal change has taken place. Climate change? I have no idea, but I do know this transformation used to start toward the very end of September. We’ve been in it for a couple of weeks now as we were last year at this time.
Our Great blue heron friend is in the river every day, in just about the same place. Endlessly patient, waiting for the right moment to find a fish. The other day he was in the midst of lots of Canada geese doing the same thing.
We had a beautiful sunrise this morning with the sky an intense blue with pink streaks. Just glorious.
Yesterday, we took the day off from walking but we’ll be back at it today. But not until I make our second cup of coffee.
Stay safe.
Happy Monday.

Good morning Claudia. Sounded like a perfect day. What a sky! We took a small trip as well. Nature….everyone needs a day out. Have a beautiful day!

You, too, Verna!

Your drive was what my husband & I call a “1 day vacation/adventure “. A vacation/adventure is a mindset. It doesn’t have to be many days long, geographically distant or cost any money. It is just the 2 of you doing something pleasant together. In the moment….enjoy the moment…
Peace be with you,
Luanne

Perfect way to describe it, Luanne!

Your car adventure sounds fun and you have such beautiful scenery to drive through. Dean is hoping to retire next year and the other day he started talking about where we should take our first long car trip to just get away and relax. Can’t wait.
You see a blue heron every day?! We have Audubon’s blue heron hanging in our front hall. In the powder room off the hall is a stunning Japanese print of a great white heron on a black background. Can you tell I like them?
Well, off to take a Covid test. I think Dean got the most complicated one the drug store had. Directions as long as for an IKEA table. Fingers crossed for a negative.
Take care,
Kay

Good luck, Kay!

Country drives are the best. We took one a couple weeks ago, and kept running into so many detours due to road construction projects. Took us twice as long, but also took us on new roads, too. It turned into an adventure…the best kind of drives.
We have a blue heron in the marsh that passes through…so we don’t get to see him much. But every sighting is a wonder to me.
I’m off to lunch with my gal pals…lots of laughter to look forward to. Enjoy your day! ;)
Claudia says
Have fun with your friends, Donnamae!
Stay safe.
Elaine in Toronto says
Nice you and Don had a day out in the beautiful fall weather. Hope you stopped for those fries you love. Hugs, Elaine
Claudia says
The area was rural. No chain stores – no fries.
Stay safe, Elaine.

Sunday drives were a big family event in my childhood, so this is very evocative. We always stopped for soft ice cream, but I suspect you all are more healthy eaters (I am too now).

Claudia says
Only if there is sugar-free ice cream. Which there wasn’t.
Stay safe, Ceci.

Oh Claudia, that looks like a perfect way to spend a Sunday. What a gorgeous day! I love a good road trip, too. Rick — not so much. He’s not my favorite road trip partner, mostly because he hates being in a car so much he never lets anyone else forget it! But eventually, all settles in and it’s rather fun. You have some beautiful territory around you. I’m not seeing a lot of fallen leaves here yet but in Canada, quite a few (and the latitude is about the same as mid-Michigan. I hope today is a good one for you!
Claudia says
Thanks so much, Jeanie.
Lots and lots of leaves on the ground here.
Stay safe.
