Oh heavens. More sleep deprivation. I was thrown off by staying up late to watch the Oscars and then when I got in bed, the high winds were so loud that I couldn’t sleep. I’m exhausted. Two nights in a row with not enough sleep makes me virtually incapable of doing anything for the rest of the day. Well that’s a slight exaggeration, so let’s edit that to “doing anything of any complexity.”
Most of my predictions as to the Oscar winners proved to be correct, but there were some surprises. When Olivia Colman (a favorite of ours) won, Don and I turned to each other and gasped out loud! Everyone was so sure that Glenn Close would win. We found ourselves simultaneously thrilled for Colman, yet feeling badly for Close’s very public loss. We were torn. But Close was gracious, as always, and Colman was delightful. We’ve long been fans of her acting chops. And her performance in The Favourite was brilliant.
As I’ve said before Green Book is one of the few nominated movies we haven’t seen. But its win last night for Best Picture was controversial. I’ve been reading up on that this morning.
Thrilled for Roma and Alfonso Cuarón. I still think it should have won Best Picture, but the fact that it won Best Foreign Film probably cancelled out that possibility.
Thrilled for all the groundbreaking Black Panther wins. And for Spike Lee to win his first Oscar (not counting his honorary Oscar.) His joy was infectious. Thrilled for Rami Malek, who was pretty damned incredible as Freddie Mercury. And for Regina King – I haven’t seen the movie yet, but she is a consistently wonderful actress.
Loved Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper singing Shallow.
And Bette Midler. (My favorite dress of the evening, by the way.)
Anyway, those are my thoughts off the top of my head.
I thought the ceremony was quite good – I’m thinking they don’t really need a host!
The wind is still howling.
Happy Monday.
Shanna says
Oh, dear. I also stayed up too late to watch. And I agree that maybe having no host is the way to go forward. Didn’t miss a host in the least. I shared your joy for Rami Malek and mixture of shock for Glenn Close and delight for Olivia Coleman. My favorite dress was Angela Bassett’s hot pink perfection. But I was glad for Mahershala Ali’s win. He is so good in this season of True Detective that I had to watch the finale of that one AFTER the Oscars! (He plays the same character throughout half a lifetime and is so believable and heartbreaking as a young war vet, middle-aged and troubled husband and father, then as an old man struggling with dementia. You can just see the confusion on his face without him even saying a word—wonderful actor!)
But the most surprising moment for me was on the red carpet, when Amy Adams was there with her mother and sisters. I went all through grade school with her mother and haven’t seen her since. Such strong genes! All three of the girls look like Kathy did in her younger days, but I was looking for the little girl I knew in the older woman’s face…and had a little trouble seeing the Kathy I remember. Really put the exclamation mark on the reality of my own aging self!
Claudia says
How interesting that you went to school with Amy Adam’s mom! I completely understand about the changes age brings, I always see it in others but am shocked when I see it in myself!
Linda @ A La Carte says
I also thought it was a good show and without a host went very smoothly for the most part. Some surprises for sure. I was so happy for Olivia Coleman but did feel badly for Glenn Close who is a very good actor. The winning movie is very controversial it seems as I’ve been reading about it this morning also. Thrilled for ROMA and its wins. What a stunning movie. I rather enjoyed last night and I haven’t always liked the Oscars. Lady Gaga was wonderful with Bradley Cooper…two class acts in my opinion!
So sorry you are with out enough sleep again. Hopefully a good rest tonight.
Claudia says
Fingers crossed, Linda!
Tana says
I don’t sleep well at night. That is why I nap. Guess I really am an old lady, but what else is to be done when I can’t sleep at night? I feel your pain when sleep doesn’t happen.
Claudia says
You have to grab some sleep when and where you can, Tana!
Mary Bond says
I have not slept well for a while but I am used to it. I hope you do not get used to it and sleep well soon. I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed seeing some of the winners.
Claudia says
Thanks, Mary. Here’s to better sleep for you and everyone!
Betsy says
Green Book was my favorite movie this year as it was for most of my friends. Did not expect it to win but Viggo Mortenson, the actors who played his family and Mahershela Ali were amazing.
I’m so glad you liked the book Less!
The boston fern looks lovely.
Claudia says
Roma was my favorite, of course. And The Favourite and A Star is Born. Thanks, Betsy.

I’m with you on the Colman/Close thing. I really wanted them to have the Hepburn-Streisand tie of years ago. I loved Colman’s speech though. She was the epitome of gobsmacked! She’s always been a “favourite” of mine.
I really didn’t have a horse in this game otherwise, apart from Dafoe, whom I knew wouldn’t make it. And RGB, although I’ve heard wonderful things about Free Solo and it was my second choice. I missed the hour in the middle to watch “Victoria” but will try to catch it on demand. I agree — no host was much better and I loved the open!
Claudia says
Her speech was absolutely delightful.
I haven’t seen Free Solo, but we really want to see it soon. Thanks, Jeanie.
Chris K in Wisconsin says
It was a fun way to spend a night when we couldn’t go anywhere anyway due to weather, and lots of pretty (everything) to see. I always wonder how some movies gather so many awards through the evening and then don’t win Best Picture. My question is ~ do different groups of people vote for the different awards, and then everyone votes for BP?? It kind of seemed to be all over the place to me. Which is great, as so many movies and people were recognized. “Shallow” was beyond amazing. This morning a newscaster said every person should hopefully find someone who looks at them the way those two did.
Sorry about the sleep cycle. The winds have finally left us. It is exhausting.
Claudia says
Well, they have chemistry, as evidenced in the film. But they’re actors and performers, remember. They were selling the song, as they should do.
Winds still going strong here and will be until this evening. Even Don (who usually doesn’t mind them) has had it.
kathy in iowa says
hope you get to sleeping better soon.
i saw a bit of those awards last night and agree about bette midler’s dress … my favorite, especially the daisies! that song was sure bittersweet, but i love her voice. and while i feel bad for all the nominees who don’t leave with an award, like glenn close, i found olivia colman’s speech wonderful and delightfully real.
hope you have a good day.

ps: that fern looks beautiful and that’s due to your good care.
Claudia says
Or luck, I don’t know. But it’s hanging in there and I think it will make it. I’ll put it outside again sometime in April.
Claudia says
Wasn’t that the most lovely dress? Thanks, Kathy!
Donnamae says
I actually enjoyed the awards last night…it seemed much more informal and light. I certainly didn’t miss having a host…and thought the night went flawlessly. I thought Olivia Colman’s acceptance was delightful….though I felt bad for Glenn Close. Lots of highlights to be had, that’s for sure.
The wind has stopped here, but, now we have a deep freeze for a few days. I am amazed at how well your fern is doing…wow! Love to know your secret? Hope you get a good nights sleep tonight! ;)
Claudia says
Very cold here as well. The wind is relentless today. It gets to you, doesn’t it?
I water the fern every three or four days and I mist it, as well. That’s it.
Donnamae says
Thanks…and yes…that wind was horrible. Sounded like a freight train heading straight for the house all day long…but never getting there! ;)
Claudia says
It’s still going as I write this. Ready to scream!
Christy says
Ah! The Academy Awards were so much fun to watch! I agree with all, no need for a host, is there? Loved the opening, loved the flow of the evening…highlights were of course Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper, Olivia Coleman was delightful & Bette Midler. Does Bette Midler age?!? I thought she was lovely and her voice, perfect!! I am sorry to hear you haven’t been able to sleep well lately, sleep deprivation is no fun at all. Winds sure can get annoying really quick. Here in Southern California we get “Santa Ana” winds for days at a time that wreak havoc on the landscape and nerves. Fortunately, the season is about to change and next thing you know your beautiful fern will be back outside and you will be at the garden center filling up your pretty pots and planters. Oh! This morning I received an email reminding us to renew our season seats for the Broadway season. They are playing both Anastasia and Margaritaville. I was hoping maybe Don would go on tour. Is that even an option? Hope you two are feeling as good as new soon! Hugs, Christy
Claudia says
I used to live in Southern California. I’m very familiar with Santa Anas! They also wreaked havoc on my allergies!
We haven’t heard anything about the tour, yet. No one has approached Don. Whether they will or not, we have no idea. And whether Don would do it if they asked is definitely unknown right now. It’s a huge commitment!
Dee Dee says
Hello Claudia,
Hopefully you’ve come through the other side of your awful virus. Nowadays, the Oscars are only shown on subscription TV (plus with being seven hours ahead over here, they start at some ungodly hour of the morning!) So I’ve been catching up with the highlights on YouTube.
I’m so pleased for Olivia Colman – for me, she deserved the award if only for a brief scene towards the end of the film when she was able to portray that Queen Anne had suffered a stroke, just by the way she allowed a slight drooping on one side of her face and within in her voice. It was so done so subtly.
Dee Dee
Claudia says
She is a brilliant actress and I’m thrilled for her!
Lynn says
After watching the Oscars for 63 years (I don’t think I’ve missed one in that time), I agree. I really didn’t miss having a host…in fact, I quite enjoyed it.
Claudia says
Me too, Lynn!
Gayle says
No host worked. I was surprised that Hollywood praised and acknowledged Roma, Netflix will ruin the movie theater. Will you and Don weigh in on that? Roma was mesmerizing and I loved Cleo. Love Gaga and Bradley. Love your fern❤️❤️
Claudia says
Movie theaters have been on the way out for years, well before Netflix. The minute streaming started and movies went straight to DVD it was the beginning of the end.
Donna meeker says
I so badly wanted Glenn Close to win. She was excellent in The Wife. Loved that movie. She is a class act.
Claudia says
She was excellent. But so was Olivia Colman. It’s too bad there has to be just one winner – always the problem with awards of any kind.
Penny Spencer says
Hello and glad to hear you’re feeling better. We’ve had terribly high winds here in Michigan as well. There will be a mess to clean up around the cottage c ome spring, but I welcome spring, any time soon! Unfortunately, due to wind, we lost power (AGAIN) just after the awards show started so was unable to watch the show. I was happy to hear Green Book won. I thought it was a wonderful movie with great acting, but don’t understand the controversy over it though. Ignorance and prejudice is very demeaning and ugly.
Claudia says
I’m so sorry you lost power, Penny!
The controversy over Green Book has nothing to do with ignorance and prejudice. Google it if you’re at all interested. Thanks, Penny.
Kay says
I gave the Oscars a pass since I hadn’t seen any of the movies, except “Black Panther” on Netflix. What a relief when the wind finally stopped today. Yesterday there was a 131 car pileup north of here in windy white out conditions.
It is no fun to go through sleep deprivation. I truly does affect your whole day. Hopefully this will pass soon for you.
K.
Claudia says
Oh my goodness! How horrific! I hope no one was injured.
You should watch Olivia Colman’s acceptance speech. To me? The best ever.
Nancy Blue Moon says
I couldn’t watch the Oscars as all I have is Netflix but was glad to hear that Rami Maleck won…he brought back such great memories of Freddie Mercury…the wind was howling all night and day here too!
Claudia says
Watch Olivia Colman’s acceptance speech – the best I’ve ever seen. And Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper singing Shallow.
