The Dreaded Snow

January 16, 2018 at 9:17 am by Claudia

It’s snowing.

By the time this is over, which will be tomorrow, we’ll have anywhere from 4 to 8 inches on the ground. Lovely. (I’m being sarcastic.) This sort of knocks out two days that we could use to get ready for the move to NYC.

Oh, winter, you often throw a spanner in the works, don’t you?

This weekend, it will get warmer, so I’m hoping it starts to melt some of the snow. Actually, I was hoping it would melt the huge slab of ice on our driveway where I usually park my car, but with the snow having to melt first, I doubt it.

This, my friends, is why negotiating any time spent in NYC this winter will be tricky. Cannot wait until Spring!

After having my new iPhone in my hands for about two months, I just played with Portrait Mode for the first time yesterday. It’s so neat. It easily does what I have to do with either the macro setting or a special lens on my big girl camera. It focuses on one thing and blurs the rest. I have always loved that look. Such fun!

All the photos were shot with my phone. Amazing.

We watched The Shape of Water  again last night. Extraordinary. We noticed even more the second time. It’s my favorite movie of the year and will be added to my Favorite Movie Ever list. I can’t get enough of it.

So, we’re making lists of what we need to take. We’ll drive down in Don’s car and he may keep it in the city for the week until he can drive home for his day off. Or I might drive it back on Tuesday. We’re not sure yet.

Other than that, we’re hanging in there and enjoying our time together – a collective deep breath before Don moves into overdrive with the musical.

By the way, before I forget, I have been mostly unable to leave comments on Blogger blogs. I’m signed into my Blogger account when I try to do it, but more often than not, it doesn’t work. So it’s not that I don’t care, I just can’t leave a comment. Blogger needs to get it together.

Happy Tuesday.

Your phone’s camera is amazing! We might get some snow here this week but as long as I can get to the hospital for my surgery on Friday I’ll be OK. I want it over! My Mom seems to be doing well after losing Sam and the cataract surgery seemed to go well. The regime of eye drops is driving her crazy but it is what it is. Snuggle up and stay warm. Hugs!

Have you seen The Post yet (did I miss your comments)? I saw it last night. Yes, Spielberg knew what was coming in Feb. of 2017! When I was in middle school, I was obsessed with the Watergate Hearings. I knew that Nixon was a crook, just like our current president. It was so interesting to see what the Post and Times had to lose and how they stood up to an autocrat. History is repeating itself now. See it when you can!!

I’m due for an upgrade with my iPhone. But I wasn’t going to get a newer one because I have a 6s. You may have changed my mind. Those pics are truly remarkable! Snow complicates everything. We ended getting almost 7 inches, and it is beautiful….but, it’s a nuisance. Hope you get everything done on your lists! ;)

I had a 6. I don’t know what the 6s has, but the 7 plus has a much better camera, supposedly, and these pictures prove it!

The 6s supposedly has a better camera than the 6. But…quite frankly…they were out of 6’s, so I had very little choice. (Besides my sons all said a 6s was better.) I love the portrait feature on your 7….makes the pics look very professional. Course..there is your skill level…there’s no denying that! ;)

It was pretty easy to use, Donnamae. I don’t think it had anything to do with my skill level!

I love that feature of your phone camera—don’t think mine does that, it’s only a six. We binge-watched an entire season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and loved it! The wait for more will be long, I guess.
Cold weather here has outstayed its welcome, too. Tired of it!

I think that another season of Grace and Frankie is going to be available on Netflix sometime this month.

No, I had a 6 and that feature wasn’t available.

Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin were on Today this morning and did mention it should be on Netflix, I think they said this month. It was a fun interview.

We did get some snow, but the roads are now clear, and the weather people are saying 40*+ at the end of the week. We will hope that they are correct.

Hope you have a good Tuesday and that the snow doesn’t last too long!

Does Don get a parking space for his car where his apartment is? A dedicated parking space seem rare in NYC.

It seems intimidating, to me, to be driving in the city! I had a boyfriend a hundred years ago who traveled cross-country in a van after college and he did have a cousin (with a VERY good job) who lived where there was an ‘underground’ garage (or at least covered parking; I can’t recall now) in NYC, so he was major-glad to park his van in her parking space (she didn’t have a car, herself) and leave it there til he left a few weeks later because, even though an experienced driver, he said navigating the streets of Manhattan in his own vehicle was a nightmare. He learned to take the subway; would walk; take a bus; take a cab.

Is it an easy drive in for you two? I had a cousin who lived in San Francisco in the Russian Hill area (years ago) and she’d sometimes have to park really far away from her front door. Hard to trudge uphill, in the wind, carrying a sack of groceries…or anything.

Not all that easy. We’ve both driven in the city before. In fact, when we first moved out here and were renting closer to the city, we did it more often. When I was in my early thirties, I once drove a rental truck into the city from Philadelphia and picked up a guy along with his stuff. We were both moving to Boston (though not together). So I’ve done it often enough, but not so much in the past few years. Don doesn’t mind it at all. If I can figure out how to get out of his neighborhood and onto the West Side Highway, and it’s only a few blocks from his apartment, I could figure out how to get home. We’ll see. Depends on whether Don wants to hassle with moving the car all the time for a week.

I am one of those weirdos that love, love, love cold weather and snow:) I work at our local hospital so I am required to be there no matter the weather. I actually LIKE driving in snow! Strange makes the world go around:) Our baby (actually 22 now) used to work at our local ski and ice skating resort , says she can drive so well in bad weather because it’s like driving the zimboni!
My husband obviously thinks we are nuts:)

I grew up driving in snow in Michigan. Never liked it. It was normal, but I never liked it. And now that I live in the country, it’s more dangerous driving in this weather. But good for you!

Hope the weather prediction is wrong, but not likely. Last time they kept saying snow flurries, we wound up with about 8 inches. Queens is getting 1 to 3 inches , at least I can cope with that. I am keeping my fingers crossed that 1 inch is all we get.

It’s been snowing lightly all day but it’s going to pick up overnight and into the morning. We already have at least two inches, so I think we’ll hit 8.

for most of my life, winter was my favorite season (kandi … you weren’t alone in that love of winter!), but no longer … members of my family have had a head injury requiring surgery and broken bones, pain due to ice. we’re not moving so we take it easy and smart. wish everyone would slow down, literally.

I’m glad you’re enjoying your new phone’s camera.. I have to experiment more with that function. I’ve been on the phone with Apple tech support for hours over the last several days as for some reason my photos would not move over to my MacBook Pro via PhotoStream. But it might be working now.. lol. You are such a good houseplant keeper! I want to find a ZZ plant now. I hope you can get to the city safely! Snow is pretty but sure can make things difficult. Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
