Elaine Shaw, of London, England, designed a modern dollhouse for her daughter consisting of 4 different floors. The floors could be purchased separately.
I had my eye on that dollhouse for a long, long time. I knew that it was a pipe dream and that I could never afford all four floors, but a couple of years ago, when we had a little extra money, I bit the bullet and purchased a floor. It arrived from England, very well packed, and it’s designed so well that I was able to assemble it in about 20 minutes.
This is the first floor I purchased. Those are acrylic panels in the front. I wrote Elaine to thank her and she mentioned that she might stop selling them as she was having trouble with a supplier. So I bought one more floor.
I haven’t done much with either floor simply because I’m not sure how I want to decorate. Do I want the white look of the walls and floor? Do I want wallpaper? A mini kitchen? A bedroom?
You see? I haven’t been able to commit. I have purchased a few pieces for the living room and I made a modern Christmas tree, all of which you can see below:
The sofa is by the same artisan in Australia who made the sofa for Don’s Mini Studio. The coffee table was a splurge from Atomic Miniatures, as well as the ashtray, by the same maker. The chair is from a miniaturist in England, Alice Miniatures. The table was from of all places, Michael’s. The ski poster was won in a swap. The blue pottery is by Maddie Gehrig. I made the prints on the wall. They’re from an article in the New York Times. (I want to make them bigger.) The presents are from my stash, and the tree is a metallic bottlebrush tree that I decorated.
With the addition of the corner cabinet handmade by Barbara Vajnar of Bubba’s Minis (who is retiring) I finally have a bead on the way I want to go with this modern house. It will be the home of two collectors of folk art. So it will have a clean, but eclectic feel. I like mixing periods. The downstairs will probably combine a bed alcove and a kitchen. A penthouse? A beach house? I’m not sure. But it will be fun to put together.
