If you head to the secret garden from the side door, you’ll see a rain barrel just around the corner to the left and several step stones that lead you from the back of the house into the garden. If you want to head to the back forty, you walk in front of the two chairs, then take a slight right, where there are more step stones leading up a slight hill.
That’s exactly what our not-so-little-anymore groundhog babies do. I’ve seen Buddy cross from the tree to the gate, go through the gate and then turn that corner by the rain barrel and head for the step stones. It’s so adorable. Once he’s gone up that little hill, he stays close to the bushes, etc., on the left and then disappears into the underbrush. I walked up there yesterday and I saw a baby near the entrance to their burrow. He quickly disappeared. (We cleared out that area a few years back and that’s when we discovered the burrow. I think there were 2 holes. So in the interest of the safety of the groundhogs, we’ve let that area get a bit overgrown to provide cover.) I think the burrow leads to our neighbor’s shed, which is about 15 feet away from this entrance.
Rain is due today. It never made an appearance yesterday.
Someone has a birthday tomorrow so I’m going to try making a card for him today. We’ll see what I come up with!
Stay safe.
Happy Friday.

Your outdoor sitting area looks so inviting…add a good book and some snacks…I could stay there for quite a while! Lucky groundhogs! It’s nice to see all that green! Our hills have turned golden…. there’s been several small grass fires around the last couple days, but fortunately they’ve been contained fairly quickly. Have fun with your creative endeavor with the card-making…much better than store bought!
Claudia says
I sure hope you get some rain, Barrie!
Stay safe.
Donnamae says
You really do have the perfect venue for all your baby groundhogs. They have the perfect home. And the view is pretty, too. Do you get to sit in your secret garden much?
Rain is promised on Sunday…fingers crossed. We need it…as do so many others. Enjoy your day! ;)
Claudia says
We don’t sit there as much as we used to. I guess the novelty has worn off!
Yay for rain!
Stay safe, Donnamae.

I love the idea of a secret garden! Everything is not a secret in my front and back yards…. but at least I find surprises, like the small bird’s nest in the huge pot that holds my daffodils, and the lizards I see scampering around. They’re recent (within the last three years or so) residents to my yard.
Claudia says
I love lizards!
Stay safe, Wendy.

Look at that pristine green where you and Don get to sit on your lush property! So serene.
Claudia says
The Secret Garden is always the greenest spot on the property because it’s at the bottom of a hill and gets a lot of runoff.
Stay safe, Vicki.

It’s such a rewarding time of year to be outdoors and enjoy all the burgeoning life around us as the seasons change. Hurray for summer! And babies! And flowers!
Lilypad Pond is my favorite part of our garden. The lilies are thriving. I get occasional glimpses of shy goldfish. The clear water means the barley straw is winning against the algae blooms. Best of all is listening to the water splashing over the rocks and into the pond, just a subtle tinkling, while I sit and read.
Claudia says
Oh, I wish we had a pond! The sound of water splashing is so soothing and wonderful.
Stay safe, Roxie.

I love that he has a routine! And a darned cute one, too! They definitely chose a fine spot to live!
Claudia says
He was over here again yesterday with one of his siblings.
Stay safe.

dear Claudia/Don — these pixs of your yard (today & yesterday) are wonderful — love seeing them — I know the effort these beautiful spaces require which makes me appreciate them even more — not being responsible for the upkeep is an advantage for me, haha!! Sure hope your special big guy has an incredible bday — pls add my very best wishes to all the others he will receive. stay safe
Claudia says
I will, Linda.
Thank you.
Stay safe!
