We had torrential rains yesterday. There were flash flood warnings, in fact, my phone kept sending out a loud alarm. Some areas of the Hudson Valley got over 6 – 8 inches of rain in a couple of hours. South of us, near West Point, there were cars underwater. There were countless water rescues and, as of yesterday, a few missing persons. I hope that they’ve been found. The Palisades Parkway, which we use whenever we’re headed to NYC, was flooded. Rte 9, which also heads south, was flooded. It was terrible out there.
We didn’t get quite as much rain, but I’d say we got at least 3 inches. I’m sure there are areas around here that flooded as we have several rivers close by. Fortunately, we didn’t try to drive anywhere and we’re up on a hill, and that helps. More rain today in parts of this area, though it’s starting to look as if we might not get any.
Remember that photo of the hydrangeas? They’ve been pummeled. I guess I took it just in time!
This has been the strangest and most intense summer weather-wise that I can remember.
Something that makes me smile, in spite of the weather:
Two timid explorers.
That’s all I have to report. Yesterday was all about the rain.
We need a break.
Stay safe.
Happy Monday.

My best friend’s sister teaches at West Point and lives close by. Her basement is completely flooded. She recently had her basement remodeled for an Airbnb and now it is ruined. I am sick over this. When oh when will people realize climate change is real.
Claudia says
It is definitely real. This has been a summer of extremes.
I’m sorry for your friend’s sister! That is heartbreaking.
Stay safe, Linda.
Barrie says
That rainfall was quite destructive….. definitely climate change. Such a dichotomy with the horrible heat in other parts of the country. Glad to hear you stayed safe.
Claudia says
Absolutely climate change.
Thanks, Barrie.
Stay safe.
Tana says
I have been listening about the rain in New York and I was worried about you and Don. I am very relieved to hear that you are safe and somewhat dry. You two and New York are in my prayers.
Claudia says
Thank you so much, Tana.
Stay safe.

Things are so strange. We’ve only had about 4 days of rain all summer. Grass is brownish and we spend hours watering plants. The rain they’ve had down state seems to miss us. Just odd…
Hoping for a sunny day for you,
Eileen
Claudia says
I’ve heard that from other readers who live in the upper Midwest, Eileen. I hope you get some rain very soon.
Last year, during our drought, it seemed that every town around us got rain, but not us.
Stay safe.
Kay in SE WI says
I read about all the rain first thing this morning on the CNN app and immediately thought of you and Don. Glad you stayed safe at home. Why anyone would travel when there are flash flood warnings has always puzzled me.
Meanwhile, we could use a bit of rain here. This has been a spring and summer of extremes all around the country. Guess we all have to get used to it, unfortunately.
Take care,
Kay
Claudia says
Sadly, a young woman died in all of this. Her home was surrounded by water and she was attempting to walk to safety with her dog and she was swept away. Heartbreaking.
Stay safe, Kay.
Vicki says
Yes, I just watched the national news on TV and the weather in the Hudson Valley is so scary, all the flooding; was glad you said you’d be doing a grocery run but then thankfully be able to stay indoors and out of the rain. Here in the West a lot of heat but not so much where I am; warmer, yes, it’s after all JULY/summer now, but hugging the coastline has helped in Southern Calif. We do have sun out early this morning; no marine layer to shield us.
Be careful out there, Claudia and Don! Very good that you’re up on that hill!
Claudia says
Thanks so much, Vicki.
Stay safe.
Deb says
You have so much rain and we need rain. The flooding is horrible back east. We are having a heat wave, 115-120, but at least no humidity. It still makes us want to stay inside. I go this week to see how much physical therapy I will need on my shoulder. The pain has actually gotten better than it was. I love the outfits on the girls. Makes me think that fall is not far away. Our trip to San Diego over the 4th was incredible. Perfect weather and all the family together. I still wish we could afford to live there. At least I have a sister there I can visit. Stay dry!
Claudia says
I’m glad to hear that your pain is fading a bit, Deb.
It wasn’t the main reason at all, but one of the things we thought of when moving away from San Diego over 20 years ago was the insane cost to buy a house or a condo. And that was 20 years ago! It used to have more of a small-town feel and things were affordable. No more.
Stay safe, Deb.
Petie Gallacher says
I just had the news on and heard about the flooding and wanted to check on you. I’m glad you are ok.
Petie Gallacher
Claudia says
Thanks so much for checking in, Petie!
Stay safe.
jeanie says
Your weather sounds absolutely grim. Glad all is ok, but enough is enough!
Claudia says
Exactly. I have had it with all these extremes!
Stay safe, Jeanie.
