As predicted, posting about my egg cup collection inspired me to search eBay and Etsy. It is true that the figural egg cup pickings are slimmer these days. I started collecting in 2002 and, thankfully, I seemed to have discovered egg cups at just the right time. I rarely see duplicates of many of my egg cups, though I do see one or two of them now and then.
Etsy seems to have a bit more in terms of figural options, but I found this one – one I’ve wanted for a while – on eBay.
My egg cup reference book says this is “Oriental boy with dog kissing his cheek.” It says it was made in Occupied Japan, but the stamp on the bottom of mine just says Japan. So this might be a later edition. Occupied Japan denotes that time period just after the war, from 1947-1952. If this was made after that, it’s still a good 60 years old – almost as old as me!
I love these little Japanese designed figures, often little boys, who either sit or stand and are adorable.
This guy belongs with two other egg cups in my collection:
You can see the similarity – both boys on the left are sitting, the new guy is standing, albeit with short little legs. I love the rosy cheeks on all three of them and the addition of the dog on this newest treasure. Do we think that’s a clown suit on this little one? Or is he a mini Pierrot?
Aren’t these guys the cutest?
I have my eye on two other egg cups – a pair, but they’re rare (not figural) and I don’t know whether I’ll snag them. I’m trying to hold off bidding any more until the last minute. We’ll see how that goes.
Today looks rather gloomy, though we may see some sun. My back is much better, so I might try to do a small amount of clean-up outside, mostly debris from falling branches. But I’ll take it slow.
Happy Saturday.

Is it weird that when I’m at our Antique Mall or treasure hunting thrift shops and I see egg cups, I automatically think “I wonder if Claudia has this one” …. take it easy today! Chy
Claudia says
No, not at all weird – just very sweet! Thanks, Chy!
Linda @ A La Carte says
What a cute addition to your egg cups. I hope you snag the other two also. It’s so much fun to collect and I haven’t added to any of my ‘main’ collections in a long time. It’s raining today but nothing will stop us from celebrating Tiger’s 7th Birthday! Hugs!
Claudia says
Happy Birthday to Tiger! Have fun celebrating!

Cute! I think it’s a clown…but I prefer mini Pierrot. I finally saw an egg cup at a thrift store…crystal…but I passed. The sun is brightly shining, which is helpful, since it’s rather cold outside. I did some checking on Etsy…there are several Wallace Nuttings listed I saw. Interesting…they are so pretty. Enjoy your day…take it easy on your back! ;)
Claudia says
I’m not as enamored of glass and crystal egg cups. True to my usual M.O., I like pottery. Glad you’re perusing the Wallace Nuttings! The sun is shining here, just came out, so I’m going to spend some time outside today. Thanks, Donna!
Donnamae says
Well…I collect crystal…but I just wasn’t feeling it. I have to find a place first for anything new…I’m trying not to overwhelm myself or the house. I have this constant war with myself…I want to purge, cull the herd so to speak….and collect at the same time. It’s a battle! ;)

That new little guy is adorable and he fits right in! Happy Saturday.
Claudia says
Thanks, Shanna!

What a cutie he is! Bet the other two were happy to see him.
We have sunshine too, and cold temps. It was 15* when we woke up this morning. Have a good day, and I know you won’t overdo it!!
Claudia says
Sunshine here today, although it’s hidden at the moment. And it’s still cold here but it’s going to warm up this week.

To me, the one on the left looks like a sailor. The middle boy looks like a little man. And the last, or newest, looks like a clown. Interesting eyebrows on that one. I love them all.
I never tire of looking at your collection. Thank you.
Monica
Claudia says
The one in the middle is usually described as a child dressed as a cowboy. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a description of the one on the left. Thanks so much, Monica!

Enjoy your weekend! We are supposed to have rain and lots of wind today, but so far it’s just been rain. Love your new egg cup; that’s a fun thing to collect. Hope your back is feeling lots better.
Claudia says
It’s much better, thank you!

Have fun on your egg cup hunt, Claudia!

Thank you, Wendy!

Well, how great that your back is better; that’s good news. Yes, go easy with it.
This little guy might indeed be a clown; look at his neck ruffle/collar. Adorable. I never knew about egg cups til I started reading your blog, Claudia. I just didn’t! Such a fun collectible. It’s got a lot going on, your new one here, especially with the addition of the dog giving him a kiss.
I wish I’d listened to my mother about similar collectibles; she was knowledgeable about so many types of ceramics/pottery. I can remember her showing me & explaining about things in her modest collections (or what we’d see in a secondhand store) of Occupied Japan. She was buying up little things in those years as a newlywed, decorating her new digs and building a nest but I think she really had her eye out in all the later years for joyous finds at Goodwill, garage/yard sales, etc. And she DID have the eye; always could sort out what to get. When I can ever unpack my house (once and for all) after remodeling/home improvements (it’s coming; 2019 is the pivotal year for the rest of all our darn work on the house), I’ll be finding her things and I may pose a question or two to you, Claudia, since you’re equally informed.
I hope your day is going well. It’s just after 11am here and the sun is struggling to get out. Disappointed that my husband has to work today; it sure cuts into the weekend besides really tiring him out after an already-long work week. He has gotten to the point that he is SO ready to retire, poor guy.
Vicki says
Sounds like your sun came out so you could have a good afternoon! Hope so. I thought of you when reading Donna Macdonald today (her blog, “A Lovely Inconsequence”). She posts these perfect little gems from time to time, and this one was entitled, “Mine Is The Sunlight” (ala singer of our younger days, Cat Stevens). She says she’s “longing for sunlit mornings” as the weather continues to snow, with “temperatures…downright chilly” and wondering when Spring will arrive. (She’s somewhere in the East; maybe New Hampshire or Rhode Island, but I’m not sure at this writing.) I don’t know what it is to yearn for the sun’s warmth like that because I live in mostly perpetual sunshine so, between what you tell us and what she said, it really caused me to ponder.
A lot of California got rain today, but not us; not a drop.
Claudia says
I had a sunlit morning earlier, but darned if it doesn’t look cloudy now! I worked outside yesterday in the sun, but it was chilly. Nevertheless, it sure felt good!
Claudia says
I know – I love that dog! I’m writing this on Sunday and I sure hope your husband gets to rest today!
Marilyn says
Glad that your back is better. Congratulations on your newest egg cup. It is adorable and so colorful.

Claudia says
It is indeed! It makes me smile and that’s a good thing!
Nancy Blue Moon says
They look adorable sitting together…with the type of collar the new kid is wearing I would guess that he is a mini Pierrot…the little dog kissing his cheek reminds me of Miss Scout and her beautiful white fur…I hope you win the others you are bidding on!
Claudia says
I won them this morning – paid a bit too much but they look to be fairly rare, so I went for it.
Audrey Johnson says
Best of luck with your bidding, and holding off until the end. Thanks for sharing your newest addition. I don’t really have a collection of anything at the moment but I imagine it is truly an adventure to watch for and get things that make you so happy. Enjoy.
Claudia says
I held off until the end and it worked, Audrey. I’ll share them with you when they arrive on my doorstep. Thanks!
