Let me start by saying I’m sleep deprived. Don got up to go to the bathroom around 4 am. Since he rarely does that, I woke up, too. Neither of us got back to sleep, so I’m feeling rather testy and tired. To top that off, I came downstairs to see Don trying to move 2 huge bees out of the kitchen and back outside. So there we were at 4 am, standing on chairs and reaching up to the overhead lights trying to capture bees in a cup. Thankfully, they were pretty docile, but boy, was their buzz loud!
Now we have to stay awake until we vote today, something we were going to do several days ago…but didn’t.
Yesterday? Big forecast for “torrential rains,” radar showing huge thunderstorms, lots of warnings? We had a nice hour-long gentle rain around 11:30. Then we waited for the deluge that was predicted and much needed.
Nothing.
This has been a very disheartening summer.
It did spritz a bit during the night because the sidewalk was wet when we got up. Supposedly, there’s a chance of some storms later in the day. But, I don’t believe them anymore. I’ve never seen so many forecasts bomb; over and over, all summer long.
Anyway, I’m grateful that I don’t have to coach today because it would be really, really difficult for me to find any energy.
One good thing about the hour of rain we did get: I’d noticed that the leaves on the limelight hydrangea were very limp – the bush wasn’t getting enough water, like everything else around here. A few hours after the rain, they looked much better, so the rain did make a difference.
I’m slowly making my way through a challenging jigsaw puzzle. But it’s a hard one.
That’s it. I’m tired. Looking forward to the afternoon when I can nap.
Stay safe.
Happy Tuesday.
Vicki says
Oh, Claudia; the sleep deprivation is awful. I hope you can have a good, replenishing afternoon nap today.
And at least you got a bit of gentle rain. Anything at this point is nourishing for the earth and soul. I can’t wait til I can smell the rain again. The wonderful damp on dirt.
Claudia says
It’s so elusive. I’ve never been through a summer like this one in my whole life. Truly. There have always been dry stretches, but nothing like the drought we’ve had in my area this year.
Stay safe, Vicki.

And of course there’s no such thing as climate change. And global warming.
On another note, I just came out of the tiny veggie patch out back (we might stay under 90 degrees today; so far, only 88 on the thermom nearing 3pm PST; but I still got hot) having picked 17 big, fat, red-red, ripe beefsteak tomatoes. They do make a nice slicing tomato; I like them on a veggie burger. Nothing else grew this year; weird zucchini and inedible cukes; but, man, these tomatoes! I’m gonna have to share with the neighbors.
Claudia says
Enjoy those tomatoes, Vicki.

glad you can vote today (thanks to everyone who votes), then take it easy and take a nap, too. hope you and don get better sleep tonight. also more rain.
lately my sleep has been bad. for example, i was awake until almost 5:30 this morning … ugh. as much as i would like one, i will try very hard not to take a nap and instead be super-productive, with the hope that will help me sleep better tonight.
happy tuesday. stay safe!

I do the same thing in those cases when I’m awake that long. I try to avoid a nap so that I can conk right out at bedtime.
Today, however, I needed a nap. I feel better now.
Stay safe, Kathy.

As my husband would say “good thing there is no climate change”
The floods in Texas are heartbreaking
Yes a very strange summer
Claudia says
I know. Floods are so overwhelming, so powerful, and so frightening.
Stay safe, Linda.

Glad you will vote today and then you can reward yourselves with a nap!
Stay safe, Claudia!
Claudia says
Had a nice long nap and feel perkier now!
Stay safe, Ellen.

Good morning, Claudia. I’m glad you got some rain but we’ve noticed the same trend — big storms predicted, maybe a little bit of rain but nothing close to a storm or a downpour. I’m glad the hydrangea leaves picked up. We did get chased in by rain the other day to eat in the house instead of the porch but it was short lived.
I’m glad coaching is off the table today. Sounds like a good day to do not a lot of anything major. That was kind to save the bees. I would try as well but not all would. I hope you can just kick back today.
Claudia says
We do our best to save all the bugs that get in the house. Sometimes, it’s impossible. But if we can, we do, and then release them outside.
I’m coaching tomorrow.
Stay safe.
I just spent a pleasant chunk of time reading your Postcards from the Lake. Sigh! It sounds so lovely. For some reason I can no longer leave comments on Blogger blogs, but know that I’m visiting!

We actually had significant rain here in VA yesterday. The hydrangeas are happy!
I used to have a tube suction thing to catch and release bugs that strayed inside – it was great but has inexplicably vanished. Maybe a major tidy up would reveal it? Need something to motivate me.
Hope your sleep settles down a bit – being exhausted is no fun and not healthy.
Thanks for voting!

You’re welcome! I’m happy to vote and really never miss an election.
I had a nap this afternoon and feel better now.
Stay safe, Ceci.

I feel your disappointment when the heavy rains blow by. We were very fortunate yesterday here in southern CT that we had an absolute deluge that went on for hours. There’s more predicted, but I don’t get my hopes up.
Re the bees: a friend gave me this little butterfly net. She had two, so I accepted it wondering what I’d ever use it for. Well, we have rescued so many bees, wasps, moths and even dragonflies from the house that we could release outside with no harm to them, and no contortions or climbing on things for us. Highly recommend!
Claudia says
I could see all the rain nearer to the coast and north of us in Albany. Very little here. That seems to be the pattern this summer.
Thanks for that tip, Louise! Perfect idea.
Stay safe.

We have a shower about each day…makes it nice. When I was in my forties, I quit needing much sleep. I have no answer why other than it was a year of really difficult deaths and problems. It was also the year I went to college full time, living in college housing. I go to bed by 11 or 12. Wake up about 4 or 5 and read. I am happy with four or five hours. I am not a napper. Many of my friends who are my age are like this. I keep saying I will sleep when I am gone. My family chuckles. Hope you get some rest. Love the picture of the porch.
Claudia says
Well, we’re the opposite. No one I know gets by with four or five hours! And I’m almost 70. BUT, I used to need 7 hours of sleep a night and now – in the last year – I notice I’m fine with 6. And that’s fine by me, as long as I feel rested.
Stay safe, Brenda.
Brendab says
Lol. We are lots older than us
At 70 I was doing six hours also…sometimes…some of just don’t need the sleep…you are quite active outside…I am not except for walking my miles…you need more sleep…
Claudia says
Not as active lately as I am normally. It’s been too hot!
Thanks, Brenda.

I went to bed at 11:30pm (my usual) woke up at 1:15am wide awake and didn’t get back to sleep until 6am. I got up and wrote three letters and did some cleaning. Slept like a log until 8:45am. It’s this hot, sticky weather we have been having all summer. My sleep has been shot. I hope September will be normal and I can get my regular routine back. At least I don’t have any set schedule I need to work around. Going to sew some pillowcases today. That will make me happy. You two have a good afternoon to do your voting. All our voting is by mail and I love that. Stick that in your ear Trump!
Claudia says
Yes, indeed! We voted, went grocery shopping, came back home, ate lunch, and took a nap.
Stay safe, Tana.

I love your porch! It looks so inviting! I don’t sleep well, so I know what it’s like to wake up early and not get back to a good rest. It was worse when I was working, but a good sleep is healthy no matter what. Your spritz sounds so nice! We need it so bad here in the Bay Area.
Well, happy voting! Hope you sleep well tonight!
Claudia says
Just took a long nap, Barrie, so I feel better. Groggy, but better!
Thank you.
Stay safe.
