A couple of weeks ago, longtime reader Margaret from Galveston contacted me about a couple of egg cups. She was finally embarking on a kitchen remodel and had two egg cups that she wanted to send to me. Of course! I always welcome new egg cups!
They arrived yesterday.
They’re made by Homer Laughlin, the creators of Fiesta. They’re part of the Harlequin line, which was similar to Fiesta, but more angular.
They are double egg cups, meaning they can be flipped over. The smaller opening holds the egg, most likely hard-boiled. The larger opening holds a soft-boiled egg.
Flipped.
I already had one in turquoise, given to me by reader Linda. I decided that the three cups should be displayed together for more of a punch.
See?
I love them. Thank you, Margaret!
I’m searching for a better lamp shade for the turquoise lamp. I already purchased one that wasn’t right, drat! But I’ll find one. The lampshade being used was from another lamp and was never meant to be anything more than a place marker and here it is, still there, after several years. Sigh.
I’m happy to report that Sam loved the cottage; sniffing, exploring, almost immediately going upstairs to the bedroom, jumping on the bed for a quick test, and then sitting like a good dog on the loveseat between Don and Rick. There’s not a lot of room on that loveseat! Sam kept licking Don’s beard and my face and we love him so.
If he ever has to spend the night, he’ll already be familiar with the cottage and it will be much easier for him.
Our taxes are almost done, so we’ll be able to sign everything before we leave for Paris. That’s a relief!
Happy Friday.

Oh, I love those egg cups! The retro lines and colors are my beach shack to a tee! I have four that are similar in color, but not in shape. I got them years ago, along with little egg-shaped plates, at Whole Foods, of all places. They were bought, as most of my dishes were, for food photos at the magazine, but I’ve kept them all this time because I love them. What nice gifts from Linda and Margaret!
Claudia says
So glad you kept your treasures, Shanna. I love these new guys!
Margaret says
They look absolutely perfect there! So glad they made it safely. The lamp is perfect too, and I’m sure you’ll find the right shade before too long.
Claudia says
Fingers crossed!
Thank you so much, Margaret! They will be treasured here at the cottage.
Shanna says
Maybe you’ll find the perfect size and shape of lampshade frame—and more of those vintage doilies, sort of like that amazing pendant in your dining room?
Claudia says
I don’t think I’ll use doilies again, but I’d love a shade with a cool patterned fabric.

what nice gifts from margaret and linda. those egg cups look great there!
every time you see/walk past that cubby, don’t you just sigh and smile?!? i do … am happy you brought it home.
glad the visit with sam worked out just fine and the taxes will soon be done. you’re crossing lots of things off that “to do” list, especially before your big trip. feels good, doesn’t it? :)
i have next week off from work and a very, very long “to do” list of my own … and am looking forward to it! just hope it rains a lot so i won’t feel pulled to be outside.
hope you have a great weekend!

ps: if you find a great source for lampshades (that will work long-distance), please let me know! i need to replace the shade on a very special old lamp from my very special childhood home and i haven’t found a source around there. thanks!

Claudia says
They’re hard to find! I’ll start searching today. xo
kathy in iowa says
thanks.
there is one shop i’ve found here that recommended someone who could make a new lampshade … but the price starts at $150.00 and she insists on coming over “to see how (i) live in order to help select fabric” for the shade. well, that’s not happening! i was shocked at the price and can pick out my own fabric! so my search continues!

Claudia says
Oh, no. That’s a bit too much, I think!
Claudia says
I do. I don’t want to get used to it being here. Yesterday we showed it to Rick and Doug and they loved it!
Yay! You get a week off! I’m sure you’ll enjoy every minute of it, Kathy.
kathy in iowa says
i am like that with some of my things … family pieces … i smile when i see them.
thanks. i’ve been taking it easy tonight (hope to finish knitting my first sock) and am grateful for some time off. my second great-nephew is due next week and appreciate prayers for a safe delivery … thank you! :)
hope you and don have a nice weekend.

Those are the perfect frosting atop that lovely little cupboard!! Just so pretty.
Oh, Sam! He was happy in MHC and knew it was a fine place to be. I’m hoping he gets to do a sleep-over sometime. What fun.
It is almost embarrassing, but we are having some fantastic weather. It has lasted about 10 days now. Maybe it is to pay us back for the relentless horrid flooding rains we had a few weeks ago. So many people still displaced, and roads remain closed. The sunshine and lovely temps have helped everyone, I think. This is supposed to last into next week, and we will take it. Hoping Florence moves out soon, and that the remnants can be cleaned up so people can move on with their lives. Weather!!!!
Hope you have a grand Friday. Good luck with the lampshade hunt!
Claudia says
I’m glad you’ve been having good weather! Ours has been, how shall I say it? Crappy. But it’s not a hurricane, so I can’t really complain.
Kay says
That little alcove just looks perfect and the top of the cabinet is for sure the right place for those egg cups. I’ve seen so many pictures of the inside of your adorable cottage and I know Sam must have felt it’s a cozy place he’d be comfortable staying at.
I have to echo Chris K. and say the weather here in WI has been utterly fantastic all week. Except for the mosquito hordes, this is turning out to be a September to cherish. Just looking out the patio door from the family room where I can see the back of the house where the kitchen is and counting 6 sparrows in a row up in the eaves seeming to look in the door at me. Guess I’d better head out and fill the feeders again.
Claudia says
Jealous of your good weather, but as I said earlier, we’re not having a hurricane, so there’s that.
Linda @ A La Carte says
The new egg cups look so great with the turquoise one! I love them on top of the cupboard. Pretty spots of color! Sam has good taste if he was comfortable at you home! Annie is staying at my Mom’s while I’m in Cali so she isn’t so lonely. Loving it here, the weather is beautiful. Cool in the mornings and evening and just right during the day. Time spent with my girl is always wonderful. Hugs!
Claudia says
So glad you’re having a good time, Linda! Enjoy!
Donnamae says
That is the perfect spot for your new egg cups. Didn’t really notice the lamp shade til you pointed it out. I think that’s one of the hardest things to buy quite frankly. We used to have a wonderful shop in town…I was able to rebuild two of my mother’s lamps. And they had a wonderful selection of shades. It’s difficult to order a lampshade on line, and big box stores have such a limited selection.
I’m glad that Sam took a liking to your cottage…course, why wouldn’t he? Now…you can plan a sleepover sometime. Chris described our weather perfectly…almost makes me feel guilty…..almost. We did pay a price for all that rain. Hope the people in Florence’s wake stay safe!
Have a good day….don’t forget to do a happy dance after you sign your taxes! ;)
Claudia says
I know! I’m not even sure where to take a lamp to be rewired!
Donnamae says
My hubby has rewired lamps before…it didn’t seem that hard. There are probably YouTube videos. It might be worth a try if the lamp needs rewiring. Good luck! ;)
Claudia says
Some of them are vintage and a bit fragile, so I’d rather have a professional handle it!
Janet in Rochester says
I’ve got a lamp with a “temporary” shade too. Been shade-shopping for literally years – with zippo success. I know the perfect shade is out there somewhere, but I’m beginning to believe that spot is somewhere on the African continent – LOL. Now every time I look at it, a creamy yellow ginger jar base – with its awkward “interim” shade, it makes me crazy. Glad to hear that Sam loves your house, but something tells me he’d love any place as long as you guys were all there. Because we all know dogs have absolutely flawless taste! They can spot phonies and meanies a mile away. Have you started packing anything for Europe yet? Peace.

Claudia says
No. It’s too early! Still more than three weeks away. We’re packing very light, so it won’t take long. I do have to get some good walking shoes, though!
Wendy T says
The egg cups look like a crown when you put them together. Glad they have a nice home with other egg cups with which they can commune!
I know you miss all your dog children, and having Sam in your cottage must bring back wonderful memories.
We visited my kitty in the hospital last night. His face actually lit up when he saw us, and he started kneading his bedding. The nurse said she could tell he was happy. I know he’s in good hands, as the other staff told me she loves black cats. She even showed us the black cat she’s adopting, who was in another room. Everyone there seems to love and/or admire him…sweet temperament, handsome fellow.. the surgeon even made a comment that he is like a small black panther. I hope to have him home this weekend, and not see the hospital for a very very long time.
Claudia says
Did I miss something yesterday? I didn’t know your kitty was back in the hospital!! Oh, no!
Wendy T says
No, you didn’t miss anything. We had to take him back We’d. Ironically, it was the end of the recovery for the surgery three weeks ago and he reblocked. He’s the first cat this surgeon ever had teblocked after doing this procedure 16 years. Had to be my boy who broke her record… anyway, no new surgery indicated but he is being kept for four or five days so they can watch him. Hoping he’s out this weekend. We really miss him. Visiting him after dinner tonight.
Claudia says
Poor baby! He’s really been through a lot! (As have you.)
kathy in iowa says
to wendy t …
it’s a tough thing having him stay at the vet’s, isn’t it?
sorry you all are going through that. prayers and hope that your cat feels better soon and gets to come home this weekend for good. i recommend treats for you both!

Wendy T says
Thanks, Kathy! It’s difficult when you can’t explain to an animal. Plenty of love when he gets home. He’s on a special diet now, so his treats are more time with us. But for me, hmmm…I think chocolate.
kathy in says
they understand love, for sure!
hope your little guy is home soon and you get some chocolate!

I hope you have a wonderful trip! I went to France for my 60th birthday – one week in Paris and one week in the south of France, which is as beautiful as you might imagine. Lavender fields and all!
The colors of new egg cups make a person happy to just look at them.
Claudia says
They’re very cheery colors, Polly!
Nancy Blue Moon says
I am so happy that Sam was happy visiting the cottage and I bet Rick and Doug are too….one less worry for them if anything happens and they would have to leave home quickly!!…Have fun on your trip guys!!
Claudia says
Don took them to the bus station. They’ll spend the night in NYC at their apartment and they fly out early tomorrow morning. England, first, then Rome.

The egg cups are lovely. The colors are so bright. Enjoy.

What an incredible collection, Claudia!!!
Claudia says
Thank you, Heather! There are more pieces scattered here and there, bigger ones that wouldn’t fit in the cubbies!
