The Unveiling

November 5, 2009 at 3:03 pm by Claudia

To review: I had this piece left over from my sideboard turned kitchen island.

I ended up (today) with this:

I am very excited about this project! I will post a tutorial in the next few days explaining what I did and what I learned not to do.

I’ve been craving a chalkboard in my kitchen for a long time. I was going to buy one, but one day I was staring at that leftover trim and a lightbulb went on in my brain. I could make a chalkboard. And so I got to work and over the next 3 or 4 days, I put it together, painted the frame, painted the chalkboard, aged the frame and ta-dah! Here it is!

Since the chalkboard is between a window and our side door, which also has a big window, it has been hard to get a photo. Wouldn’t you know it – the one day I want it to be cloudy in order to take a picture, the sun is shining away. The color of the frame is a bit more turquoise than indicated, but it is pretty accurate. The turquoise was so intense that I “antiqued” it this morning and I like it much better. The chalkboard has to be seasoned yet but I haven’t any chalk! My dog, Riley, hasn’t been feeling well at all, so I am staying home today. We’ve had a worrisome two days, but he seems to be getting better as the day goes on. I am very relieved!

Hope you like it. I promise more photos (with chalk) and the tutorial in the next day or two.

Well I kept looking at the chalkboard wondering where the little piece of trim was… And then I realized, it wasn’t such a little piece of trim – it was quite substantial! And it was what formed the top and sides (and bottom?) of the chalkboard!! When you originally showed us the teaser photo I thought it was a tiny little piece of trim, Claudia – What a fantastic idea! I love your blackboard! Oh how I’d love to have more wall space than we have in our home – and windows, for that matter! Your cottage is so charming!

I’m so happy to hear that Riley is feeling better. I didn’t realize he’d been feeling sick. Our poor Spotty was feeling under the weather last week and we had him at the vet’s… He seems to be doing a bit better this week, thank goodness….

Looking forward to the tutorial, in case I ever free up some wall space!… Donna

Funny or what, but I have done the same thing this week!!! I have not posted about it yet…I might do it for metamorphosis Monday on my spindle cottage blog. ANYWAY–I had a wooden frame that was for holding a calandar–about 2 feet long by a foot wide or so. I painted with the chalkboard paint and hung it up this morning. I do have chalk and an eraser–but have to wait 24 hours (from last night). Mine is in my kitchen too!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.
