Use Other Stair

December 4, 2011 at 9:50 am by Claudia

Last week, when Don and I were out and about looking at everything vintage, he saw a sign that he loved. He called me over and I agreed it would be a wonderful addition to our home. But we didn’t see a price and, since old signs tend to be pricey around here, we moved on. I thought about it several times during the course of the week. Turns out Don did, too.

Yesterday I was visiting the same shop and figured it was time to at least ask about the price.

$24.

Hello.

Welcome home.

But please use the other stair. If you can find it. The only ‘other stair’ around here is the spooky one that leads down to our outside-entrance-half-basement. If you want to use it, more power to you.

It’s no secret that we love words and fonts and signs. We have signs scattered around the cottage. This one is made out of wood and measures 24 x 18.  It’s old, chippy and battered. Just the way I like it. The dark green color perfectly matches the green fabric on our desk chair – a lucky coincidence.

And as Don says, it balances “all the flowers.”

Really? There are too many flowers here? I don’t think so.

But he’s right. Being aware of the weight and balance of a room is important.

Evidence: Christie’s beautiful rose painting on the left, graphically wonderful sign on the right.

And it’s fun. Everyone needs a bit of fun in their home.

Claudia, That is the kind of sign that always get me in trouble. I would try to sneak by it.LOL I need one of those….We don’t have any stairs in our house, so that would confuse people twice as much! Well worth the money! No end to the fun.

Such a happy piece of vintage – starts the imagination bubbling through all the snippets of victorian novels and films about… stored in the brain. Loved the quick little surprise of the painting of flowers.

The couple with this sign at the bottom of their only staircase must be a lot of fun. Great choice. Wish I had thought of it.

I love signs that have a sense of humor – even if that wasn’t the original intention. What a great find!

Hi Claudia, I love your cottage and how you are able to mix things up so beautifully. I’m enjoying yours and Brenda’s defending the small house series. Yesterday I came across your sweet snowflake garland so went to work on crocheting some snowflakes of my own. Love the aqua color you used and all the lovely aqua pieces in your home. Have a great new week. Tammy

I love that sign, Claudia. I have always loved that corner of your house. That staircase always reminds me of a house by Greenleaf, but I can’t remember what it’s called. Anyways, I love the little stair runners. Never noticed them before. And, I see that you have a convenient storage area underneath the stairs. I’m curious. Now, I want you to tell what you keep in there. LOL!

It “is” the perfect counter-balance to all the delicate features. I can see why y’all love it! And such a bargain! Happy, happy happenstance!

Congrats on such a perfect find!

Great buy! Totally worth it. Wish I could find some like that. But I’ve pretty much run out of walls. Balance is good. Especially on stairs. (Especially if you’re like me and tilt on the clumsy side…)

Love your new sign! Next time you have guests over, you’ll have to watch to see if they skip that step when they climb up. :-)
You are lucky that your husband finds “balance” for the flowers in fonts and signs. My husband wants to hang football stuff, like pictures of Joe Montana. Agh!!! I finally agreed to let him do that in the finished basement. :-)

I love it! I adore old signs too but have yet to find one that I both loved and could afford. It’s ok. I’m a patient girl!

Oh Claudia… I LOVE it! And, the picture on the left too, by the way!

Anxious to see your dollhouse, Hummingbird Cottage, all decked out for Christmas.

Have I ever told you how peaceful, welcoming and warm your cottage feels to me? It’s a little bit of heaven.

    Hugs!

I love the sign! It’s fantastic. I love typography, but I don’t tend to find signs like that where I live. I’ve thought about making one, but I haven’t gotten to that, either! :-) Someday, someday.

Meanwhile, I was just noticing the perfect creamy shade of white you have on your walls. It’s just creamy enough to look warm but still be white. Would you be willing to share the color? I love it!!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
