Vintage Sewing Basket & Peonies

June 6, 2011 at 4:20 pm by Claudia

Only two more weeks far away from home. I’m counting the days. I’ve been here 5 weeks and that is more than enough. The word ‘homesick’ isn’t really adequate. Miss the husband, miss the dogs and miss beauty like this:

Since my husband took this with his cell phone, the color is off, but you get the picture. I’ve missed the peony bloom for the 4th year in a row. I do believe I mean it when I say, ‘No More.’ I said that last year, I know, but all this far away coaching is losing its appeal.

You know that I try to buy something vintage as a remembrance of time on the road. I haven’t had all that much time to explore here and the price of gas has kept me closer to the condo. I did take a little trip to a neighboring town about a week ago and found this:

I’ve always wanted one of these wicker sewing baskets. The ones I’ve found in the past were battered or missing the spindles or the decal was worn away or the cord was missing. This one is in excellent condition. And it’s pink!

Another sweet decal on the inside. And see? The spindles/thread holders are just perfect.

Isn’t it pretty? The decal is so very sweet. I’ll use this for storage of some kind. Right now I’m leaning toward using it to hold all the love letters my husband sent me when he was wooing me. Isn’t ‘woo’ a wonderful word? I think we should all resolve to use it more often.

Today is my day off. Tomorrow and Wednesday are Tech/Dress Rehearsals with our first Preview performance on Friday. I teach on Tuesday and Friday. It will be a busy week and that’s a good thing.

If you haven’t read it already, I posted a book review and I’m giving away a copy of the book. Just scroll down to the previous post.

I seen one of those at an antique store and I could kick myself for not buying it! I think they are really sweet! Your looks perfect too! I can’t believe you have been gone 5 weeks already….of course I am not the one gone so I am sure it is not going fast enough for you. Thanks for stopping by today and taking a look at my chandy! I love it! I have all my “wooing” letters in a shoe box so I think your pink basket is perfect for yours!~Hugs, Patti

Claudia, five weeks is a very long time to be away from MHC and your family. The pink on that sewing basket is perfect. I almost bought a McCoy bowl this weekend but it was a bit pricey. Every time I see those McCoy colors they remind me of you. hugs♥O

It’s perfect, Claudia! Will look great when you’re not using it in your little nook studio. I emailed Trish and now I’m signed up for about four book tours. Won’t have to buy any books to read!

Ohhhhhhhhh, Noooooooooooo not the peonies. I’m feeling your pain. I came how to mine melted away in the heat of the day. You will be home soon, I hope. By the way, I didn’t realize that the babies left the nest so quickly.

That basket is so perfect for you~ perfect colors, and the decals are so sweet.

I keep looking for fresh cut peonies at Trader Joe’s. I really enjoyed them last year. Unfortunately, I haven’t seen any signs of them this year. I keep hoping and checking though…

    Hugs,
    Jill

PS: I like the word “woo” too.

The Peonys are beautiful. They remind me of a trip I made about 10 years ago to see family in Nebraska. I bought my Uncle a beautiful red one. Unfortunatly here in the desert they dont do well. The good news is the end of this month I am moving out of the desert, to a more mild climate. Everytime I think of all the flowers I will be able to grow I wanna pack up my kerchief stick it on a pole and head out. I am trying to practice patients

I’m so sorry you are missing your peonies. It’s sweet of your husband to be sending your photos and love letters.
That sewing box is fantastic. i have a wooden one that is probably from the 30s or 40s. I love it It’s one of my prized possessions.
I hope you can get home before the peonies are gone and that you don’t have to miss them ever again.
Next year, come to TN to visit me early in the spring so you can see mine, too.

The peonies are gorgeous! Thank Heaven for husbands, cell phones and photos sent through cyberspace! Not quite as good as being at home, but maybe helps a little.
I had to transplant my largest peony last fall, and it did not really bloom this year. I was so sad. Thanks for sharing yours!
    Love the basket, too!

    Hi Claudia,
I LOVE your vintage basket! I think that would be the perfect place to keep your sweet love letters from your husband. I have a few letters that my Dad wrote to my Mother when they were first married. My Dad was in the airforce at the time. My Mother always kept his letters tied together with a pretty ribbon. I was so happy to receive a few of these after my parents died in 2008. I should look for a special box to store those in, too! Have a wonderful day! xoxo Kim

Lovely peonies! I think they are the same as the ones in my garden. They are now all bloomed out and I have to wait another year to enjoy them again too.
Love that little sewing basket, and using it for love letters is such a great idea. I gave my Love a wooden box in the early days, to keep my letter to him in. I guess I’d better start writing him some more letters, that box is nowhere near full :-)
Hope time will fly for you and you will be home soon.

    Claudia,

The sewing basket is just perfect. I cannot wait to start poking around in the shops here in Maine for such treasures. Still getting settled and unpacking boxes.

The peonies are beautiful. Ours are not out yet but I missed the lilacs.

I have loved reading your “away” posts.

Claudia, I love the pink basket. I found one quite like it–a yellow one. I gave it to my daughter-in-law, who loves old things and yellow. I’m wishing you home soon. The older I get, the more I want to be home. Funny you should mention, woo is one of my very favorite words, and I think it is not used nearly enough. Thanks for your lovely blog. Mona

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
