The secret garden with the addition of the Dame’s rocket/wild phlox that has just sprung up everywhere. I swear, my wish is that this phlox lasted all summer long because the tall splashes of color up in the woods and by the shed and here in the secret garden are so lovely. Plus, we have more this year than ever. But that’s the nature of Mother Nature, isn’t it? Things bloom and fade and something else starts to bloom and on and on until it all fades away as winter arrives. The bridal veil spirea has faded. My other spirea, which needs to be cut back, is about to bloom in a week or so. (I won’t cut it back until after its bloom.)
I did a fare amount of work outside yesterday with my right hand, so it’s sore today. However, I’m heartened to know that it is getting stronger. I weed whacked, I pruned, I watered all the plants. And, I washed the dishes, which I really haven’t attempted since the sprain occurred. I have a few chores to do today, but I’m going to rest my hand as much as possible. Oh, and I drove! That was much easier than I thought it would be. Good news!
A very teeny-tiny spider on the boxwood. I love to take photos of spiders and their webs. I have to have just the right kind of light or the web won’t show up in the photo. I am fascinated by their intricacy.
I also sprayed the plants with the deer mixture. And yes, that scamp ate the tops of every phlox plant. My experience with this same thing last year tells me they will come back, but I’ll have to keep spraying in the meantime. And it’s going to rain tomorrow, so I’ll have to do the same thing again next week. They never dine on the bee balm. I don’t think they’re interested in anything in the mint family as the catmint is also ignored,
Don’s gig went well – it’s his favorite venue. He has another one this afternoon which is quite far away. I miss him when he’s gone and find I don’t know quite what to do with myself.
Since it’s a holiday weekend, I’m going to take Monday off as most of you will be busy with other things. So, I’ll see you on Wednesday.
Stay safe.
Happy Saturday.

We used to see that wild phlox along the roads between the lake and the town, always so pretty. The spider and her web are magical! Great shot. Enjoy your holiday weekend you two!

Next up will be the roadside daylillies, no? Miss those flower-edged country roads.

Morning, Claudia! It’s nice to hear that your hand is improving, that your drive went easier yesterday, and that Don’s gig went well…hope today’s gig is a good one as well. You caught all the daintiness of that spider web! They really are amazing….and they seem to work so quickly. So far, today is starting off quite overcast and the weekend is going to be cooler. I have no outdoor plans, so it’s fine with me! I grew up listening on the radio, and later watching on tv, the Indianapolis 500. My dad wasn’t a sports fan, except for watching the race every year, with his clipboard with all the racers. I watch with nostalgia. Enjoy your weekend!

Your yard is so lovely this time of year. My daughter from Canada has been making such great progress on moving me, unpacking and sorting and purging. I am so grateful to her. We are about half way done going room by room and when she leaves I should be able to manage my home again. During the years of taking care of my Mom it totally got away from me. Also we are spending some quality time together and that is priceless! Enjoy your weekend!

Glad your hand is improving, Claudia. Could you go to Don’s gig with him, maybe once in a while? That spider photo is gorgeous. Magazine worthy, even. Enjoy your long weekend. It’s raining here today in Toronto. Hugs, Elaine

dear Claudia/Don — love the phlox pixs — we have one bunch that comes back each year but they are shorter but beautiful, also don’t seem to spread — of course, the Mr is religious about his mowing/weed pulling/whacking so could be a contributing factor, haha!! glad your hand is better hope that continues — wx still saying to be alert Sun here but looking at the radar, it is not happening so don’t know where it is coming from but we are prepared just in case. stay safe/healthy

I love the wild phlox too. Your secret gargen looks so serene.
I’m glad your hand is improving. I guess we don’t heal as fast at our age. I did something to my knee…actually just woke up one morning hardly able to put weight on it. I think I may have twisted it slightly the day before getting up from sitting on the floor. Nothing that would have bothered a younger me. It’s very much better after 3 months but not 100%. I fear a knee replacement might be in my future.
You might enjoy going with Don to his gig, but at the same time independence is good at our age. I refuse to get too dependent on my husband in case he passes before me. I have a friend whose husband was very protective of her. They went everywhere together…I mean everywhere! She hasn’t driven for years, put gas in the car, gone to the Dr or shopped without him. Now he is ill and she is hiring someone to help her and drive her places. Fortunately they can afford to. She is in good health and could do more but his protectiveness has really crippled her.
I have been weeding and mulching and have some snap dragons to plant so I better get to it.
Have a good weekend.

Your gardens are so beautiful your photos capture the peace and the magic of a May day. It makes me happy that you appreciate spiders, too.
Enjoy your weekend,
Kaye

I think with all that your hand would hurt even if it was already in spit-spot condition! The secret garden looks like such a lovely haven for you. And I feel the same way about the phlox. I have some in my yard too, and I just love it!
Have a wonderful “day off.”

Claudia, your outdoor spaces are lovely and being able to enjoy all aspects of that beauty from various areas must be satisfying. I like the informality of all your planting areas. Even the porch, though filled with potted plants, is a bit exuberant, yet serene.
I missed my husband when he went to his DJ gigs. I hardly ever went with him because I couldn’t help him and I wasn’t an invited guest to the party. So, I’d stay home and got used to it. He’d be gone every Friday night and possibly 2-3 Saturday nights a month. And there were day gigs: picnics, housewarmings, birthday parties. I eventually embraced the me time, and when the children came along, I was very busy.
We’re having a cool spell (haha, low 60’s). I think it’ll warm up by midweek.
Pleased your hand is progressing to baseline.
