We’ll Give it an A for Effort

December 15, 2011 at 11:27 am by Claudia

I’m a fan of Dottie Angel. Have you visited her blog? She’s the Queen of Granny Chic and makes all sorts of wonderful things with doilies and embroidery thread and vintage fabric. About a week or so ago, she had a wonderful post on making a table runner. In her wonderfully quirky way, she put it together with bits of lace and doilies and old hankies and embroidery thread.

I thought: ‘Hey, I have lace and doilies and old hankies and embroidery thread! I’ll give this a try!”

I gathered together all my ‘bits and bobs’ as Dottie, aka Tif, calls them. Then I saw an old square of linen in my stash and decided to use it as the base of my creation – sort of a mini table cloth.

It didn’t come out the way I had planned.

Problem: Linen stretches. It wrinkles. See evidence above. Because of that, attaching strips of lace and other thingamabobs throws everything a bit out of kilter.

I like all the doilies and the lace and the hankies. Maybe I need to add more?

I feel like I have to add more to the blue handkerchief, to disguise the fact that it isn’t laying flat. Pardon me, the photo is a tad blurry, rather like I feel at the moment.

We show so many successful projects on our blogs. In the spirit of total transparency, I figured I’d share something less than successful.

I’m just an inch or so away from shoving it in a drawer.

And yet, I like it. Should I try to rescue it?

I like it! What if you ironed it from the back?

ofcourse you should rescue it Claudia – add more doilies and some lace. Your tablecloth is beautiful and it´s such a great idea.

I like it! Please don’t shove it away. Rick rack would be a fun addition.

I like it. I have a idea, why don’t you quilt around the things on the handkerchief? Quilt the blue scallops too. This will make it lie down I think and give you the little something something you are looking for.

I THINK IT IS VERY PRETTY, I WOULD BLOCK IT LIKE YOU DO AN AFGHAN, WITH PINS AND DAMPENED TOWEL, AND IRON IT.
I’M NOT SURE WHAT SIDE TO IRON IT, MAYBE THE BACK, THEN THE FRONT WON’T BE FLAT….JUST A THOUGHT…I THINK IT IS REALLY DIFFERENT AND PRETTY….
AND YOU MADE IT ALL BY YOURSELF…..
    BRAVO!!….RIZZI

I like it but if you want more go ahead. I think if you put a vase on it or something else fun you won’t notice the parts you aren’t so happy with.

You are being too critical of it. It looks fine to me. You chose things that look good together.

Stop being so hard on yourself. Take it slow. Maybe a steam iron. I think it’s looking great. And besides, if we waited for perfection on our little group, no one would be posting. That’s the fun of this whole adventure together.

It’s beauitful! Like all of our crafts or paintings, we must step back and take a look at it. And remember also that no two things are going to come out the same. I don’t think my snowflakes look quite like yours either. See, we’re just too critical of ourselves. Annette T

Claudia, it is beautiful. It doesn’t have to be perfect … it is all vintage items. Great job.

Yes dear Claudia, rescue it -with more sweet doilies and lace, and try to maybe press it with a wet piece of cloth and the iron, from behind-(that`s what I do when something is not just as I want it ot be, he,he)
it is so lovely and sweet.

I would add more stuff, and maybe stitch down the edges that are sticking up and then pin it to the ironing board and steam press it – from the back! Nice the way it is too, but you can always add more – remember, too much of a good thing can be wonderful!

It’s charming and some of the ideas to iron might please you..

if it was perfect it would be made in some foreign country by women and children being exploited, so embrace the imperfections. It’s lovely. :D

Rescue it! It’s got good bones, so to speak. Take a break from it and then come back to it with fresh eyes. It looks great. You really don’t need to do much more. Maybe some embroidery touches here or there. I think that once you have it under a vase or lamp, it will all seem pulled together and complete. Just have fun with it!

I’d just cover more of that handkerchief if it were me. That’s what glares out to me. Like the rest of it though!

If it is your intent to create in the style of ‘granny chic’ using vintage
    then, you’ve nailed it ! ! !

granny chic/vintage does lend itself to less than straight and stiff and, full of newness.

    I ♥ your creation, Claudia.

    hugs from a granny,

I love dottie angel. whenever i need a good laugh (which is quite often) i hop on over to read her. when i have a project that doesn’t quite come out the way that i planned, i put it away for awhile and then when i pull it back out, a new perspective usually will tell me how to fix it. i think it has lovely bones and will work better for you when you give it a bit of tweaking.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
