Not a whole lot to report from our little igloo. February is almost at an end and it’s been a doozy. We broke out yesterday for a short time to do exciting things like buy stamps and mail bills. Whoo hoo! And then we ran to the grocery store to stock up on a few things.
Then we drove up the driveway that has become a tunnel surrounded by snow, and nosed the car into its increasingly smaller parking space.
We watched Arthur on TCM last night. I love that movie. Just what we needed – a lovely, laugh-out-loud, beautifully acted movie. Dudley Moore is brilliant. John Gielgud is also brilliant. Liza Minelli is wonderful, as is all of the supporting cast. What’s not to love?
And this weekend? Oh, boy. Netflix releases the new season of House of Cards. I’ve told Don that we cannot binge watch…we have to limit our viewing to two episodes a night, so that we can stretch out the pleasure of watching that amazing series.
What else are we into lately?
We love this soap. We have an ongoing bath soap dilemma here. One of us likes one kind of soap, the other doesn’t. So we keep switching brands. But I think we’ve hit on something we both like. The scent of Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day soap is herbal and light. It’s not too perfumey, just clean and subtle.
I use the lavender. Don likes and uses the lemon verbena. That way, we’re both happy. Order has been restored in the bathroom.
I like to use scented candles when I’m away from home, especially when I’m staying in a small apartment. Candles are not only comforting, they also help to eliminate cooking smells. (I have a very sensitive nose!) So, though a bit pricey, I bought this candle from a neighborhood shop in Brooklyn.
I’m glad I did. It came home with me.
No, this isn’t a sponsored post. Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day has no idea who I am. I just like their products. I use their liquid soap in the kitchen, as well. Have any of you tried this line? I ask this knowing that each of us has our own personal preference as to scents and soaps and scented candles. What do you use?
Oh, don’t forget! Today is the last day to leave a comment on the book review post. I’ll draw a winner tonight, so you have until about 6 pm EST.
Happy Thursday.

I love the Mrs. Meyer’s products. I haven’t tried the soap yet. I usually buy mine at Target but I have found some at Marshall’s and TJ Maxx. I love the fabric softener and use it to wash a quilt after I have finished it. I love the ‘radish’ scent but it is hard to find.
Glad you got out. We are having a wintery mix for the next few days and it is cold. Take care and stay warm!! pam
Claudia says
Our neighborhood grocery store carries the bar soap. I also buy Meyer’s at Target. Haven’t seen the radish scent! I’ll have to look for it.

It’s nice to have time to run errands and catch up without feeling rushed. Our winter errand-running is dictated by the weather – you just can’t leave your vehicle outside even for a few hours in some of these temperatures.
Love the look and name of the “Clean Day” products. We all have allergies to scented products, so Neutrogena is the staple in our home. Because of the inclement weather, I tend to stock up on staples. (I was once compared to a character Jack Nicholson played who has rows upon rows of neatly stacked bars of Neutrogena soap in the bathroom cupboard.)
Claudia says
Gosh, our vehicle is out all the time! No garage, unfortunately. On our wish list. But I know it gets REALLY cold where you live.
I like Neutrogena soap. I bet your neatly stacked display of it is quite striking!
Tana says
I love Mrs. Meyers too. I love the Cedar dishwashing liquid, especially at Christmas. Smells just like a Christmas tree. I use it whenever I miss Christmas. Right now I have the lavender scent for my dishes that I do by hand. I also use the counter cleaner. I haven’t seen the bar soap out here, but will keep my eyes peeled. (That’s a terrible saying, isn’t it? Keeping your eyes peeled.)
Claudia says
I haven’t seen the Cedar, darn it! I love that scent. I will now be on a mission to find it, Tana.
I wonder how that saying evolved?
Vera says
Hi Claudia. I have not heard of or seen the Mrs. Meyers products…will have to look at them. I prefer what I call “clean” scents: herbal, citrus, woodsy, etc. Nothing too sweet or perfumy. Our receptionist at my office must put hand lotion on at least 10 times a day…and uses dry shampoo constantly…neither of which smell very good (in my opinion, of course). I feel like I’m choking when I walk by her desk.
Vera says
Meant to add that I told my husband no binge watching of House of Cards for us. We need to enjoy it and drag it out if we can…otherwise we will have to wait way too long for the season after…
Claudia says
Agreed on House of Cards. It is a pleasure worth stretching out as long as we can! I’ve put my foot down about it, too.
Claudia says
Oh, I dislike a too-heavy scent! And clearly, a lot of people like them!

When I first glanced at this post and saw Arthur, I thought you meant the kids’ PBS TV show, which is one of my favorite kids’ shows. My daughters watched Arthur religiously when they were young, and we still tune in for a daily episode; there’s one on while we are preparing dinner. We know the episodes so well that we don’t necessarily need to sit and watch them.
Claudia says
No, I meant the movie, of course. I’m aware of the PBS series, but since I don’t watch children’s shows (no kids) I’ve never seen it.
The movie, on the other hand, I’ve seen many times, but it’s been a while, so I really enjoyed this last night’s viewing.
Wendy TC says
I saw the movie when it came out, and probably a few times when it showed on TV…when non-cable TV used to show movies.
Since my daughters are readers also, they also loved the Arthur books. I find the TV series highly entertaining, and some episodes are downright clever. My favorite episode is the one about the Sock Market, which is a cleverly disguised episode on economics and the theory of supply and demand. The episode also explains why we are often missing one sock in a pair…!
Claudia says
I think I’m going to have to tune in, Wendy!
Sandra says
I think we will be running errands today, too. Of course, we aren’t hampered by weather. As a matter of fact, if has been a very mild winter this year. I was writing a letter this morning and discovered that the printer is out of ink. One of the dogs is going to the vet today and there is an office supply store in the same area so we can do both at the same time.
Last night I came across a copy of the “The Book of Claudia” on a borrow shelf at the community center where we play bridge. I had previously noticed it on your bookshelf and had made a mental note. I look forward to reading it, but have to finish a few others that are in line first.
Karen says
I love Meyers lemon verbena dish soap. It has a light, clean fragrance and since I enjoy washing dishes by hand, it makes the experience all the more pleasant:) I haven’t tried the other products.
Claudia says
I have the hand soap and bar soap, but not the dish soap. I’ll have to get some, Karen.
Claudia says
I have the book, but I haven’t read it, Sandra! Let me know what you think if and when you do read it.

Brenda on Cozy little house blog had some interesting comments about the book “The Long and Faraway Gone.” She was a reporter there about the same time the incidents the book is based on. it’s is interesting also to hear about how she got the book. Check it out. She always has interesting posts.
Claudia says
If you google interviews with Berney, you’ll find that he worked with the mother of the two girls who went missing – they worked at a movie theater. So obviously, that stayed with him. He based his idea on two separate crimes that happened at different times in the Oklahoma City of his youth and then he used them as a springboard for the idea of his book – but different characters, different circumstances.
But as a reviewer, I can only write about the actual content of the book – that has to be the focus, or it becomes a personal story, not a review.

Claudia,
Concerning the Mrs. Meyer’s products, go to the website and you will find many more scents and products. There are several times during the year that there is free shipping with no minimum….one coming up is Earth Day. I always stock up at that time….I love the toilet cleaner and counter sprays. If you get on their email list, you will be aware of the free shipping times.
Really enjoy your blog.
Ann
Claudia says
Good news! Thanks for the tip, Ann. I’m headed over there right now!

We’ve been staying in lately…just too cold to go anywhere. But I do have to go out today…at least the sun is shining and the sky is this beautiful shade of blue! I’ve never tried Mrs. Meyer’s products….sounds like maybe I should! I use a Oil of Olay liquid soap in the shower…and hubby uses a bar soap…with a more musky scent. I think it’s nearly impossible to have one soap that pleases two people! Enjoy your day! ;)
Claudia says
You know I love Oil of Olay – it was my mother’s scent.
Pat says
Just getting out for stamps and to mail bills is good… Sometimes it’s just the getting out for a few minutes that helps!
I am familiar with and do use Mrs. Meyers cleaning products! Didn’t know about the candles or the bath soap. I use the lavender all purpose concentrate in a dollar store spray bottle- it smells wonderful. I also have used the pump hand soap in Basil. It has a very clean subtle fragrance.
The guys really seem to like it! ( my sons and hubby). I like the canister in your bathroom– vintage and nicely painted. I saw your bathroom board on Hometalk(?) is that the name? I have t ever participated with that forum– yours is the most I’ve looked at, just last night! I’ve seen other’s boards, but it was a click on and see the item and click off. Your set up has some nice boards.
Anyway– the tissue canister caught my eye and reminded me!
So the two blogs , INSTAGRAM, and now this… It’s like I’m almost stalking you!
I’m not though—
Promise!
Claudia says
The canister is a favorite of mine, Pat. You know that we use it to store toilet paper, because we have very little storage area here in the cottage. I got the idea from some blog in the early days of blogging. I found it on eBay. I’m on Hometalk, but I have to confess I don’t do anything there. Some of these things have to fall by the wayside, or I’d never get anything done!
Susan says
I have used Mrs Meyer’s products for years. Love the soap, the dishwashing liquid and the all purpose cleaner. I vacillate between Lemon Verbena and Lavender ~ like them both. They are a bit pricey but how can one put a price tag on a good product with a lovely lingering fragrance? We recently watched all of the episodes of Breaking Bad. We were late to the game but oh how we enjoyed the series. So well acted, so many twists and turns that kept us on the edge of our seats. I never thought that a drama about such a distasteful and violent topic would have any interest for either of us, but it did. I TiVo’d all the episodes when AMC ran their marathon. Like you, I rationed them out. We watched the final episode last night. Now we are getting hooked on it’s spin off ~ Better Call Saul. Stay toasty and cozy dear friend.
Big Texas Hugs,
Susan and Bentley
Claudia says
Isn’t Breaking Bad the best? What a great, groundbreaking series. I haven’t started watching Better Call Saul, yet. Thanks for reminding me about it, Susan!
Melanie says
I have never used any Mrs. Meyers products. My favorite soap for bathing/showering is Dr. Bronner’s lavender soap (liquid). My mom is a soapmaker (the old-fashioned, laborious “true” kind with lye) and makes an unscented soap for Brian that is the only soap that keeps his eczema away all winter. (Every winter, he used to get terrible eczema on the sides of his body.) I rarely burn candles here because of my allergies, but I do have a few soy ones with natural ingredients. Those don’t bother my allergies too much.
Claudia says
How lucky for Brian that he has a mother-in-law who makes a special soap for him! I like Dr. Bronner’s products, too, Melanie.
Janet in Rochester says
Great questions. Well now, let’s see… I don’t use scented candles anymore, much as I’d like to, because I’ve learned been that the fragrance in the wax is what leaves gray smudgy residue behind on my eggshell white walls. Major bummer. And until just a few years ago, I used Zest soap. A nice fresh scent that left you feeling clean. Not squeaky, or not slippery with lotion. I grew up with it [Mom told me she & my Dad started using it very early in their marriage after getting a teeny sample bar in their mailbox]. Remember when companies used to do that? Send bitty-sized product samples in the mail? Anyway, then the Zest people “new-and-improved” it [or so they claim]. And it’s just not the same anymore. Can’t use it now, I just keep thinking of what it once was. Now I use Dr Bronner’s lavender or citrus castile soaps for personal use, and their “SalSuds” for ALL household cleaning. And now it’s time for MY commercial. Can’t say enough good things about Dr Bronner products. You use much less, so they last much longer. They rinse cleanly and quickly, so you use less water too. They actually work [SalSuds removes even mustard or grape juice with very little effort – no kidding]. You don’t need to buy/store umpteen other products [Sal Suds can be used for laundry, dishes, floors, glass, etc]. I now keep only baking soda, SalSuds and vinegar on hand for cleaning. Their products are Fair Trade and certified organic, so they’re good for the planet. And I once read that if soapmakers from the Middle Ages came back today, they would immediately recognize what the Dr Bronner’s people are doing. Which is good because I think today’s world needs a return to some of the older ways of doing things. Not everything that’s new TO us is better FOR us… Enjoy your day!
Claudia says
I use Shaklee products for cleaning – same as Dr. Bronner’s – safe for the environment, last a long, long time. They’ve been environmentally safe for as long as I can remember. I like Dr. Bronner’s too, but I’m happy with Shaklee. I’ll check out Sal Suds, Janet.
Janet in Rochester says
Good for you, Claudia. Excellent products also. My Mom used & recommended Shaklee products, took their vitamins etc – for many years. She was somewhat ahead of her time that way. She began doing a lot of reading about healthy eating, vitamins, clearing chemicals out of the house wherever she could etc – beginning in the 70s. Just when we began to realize that we humans were poisoning the planet with car exhaust, chemicals etc etc.
Linda @ A La Carte says
I’m so sensitive to scent that I’ve stopped using candles but might just have to try this one. I love a clean fresh smell and a closed up house gets so stuffy. My daughter Sara likes their products also. Glad you got out for a bit. I’m taking Mom to the Dr for a blood test today but other then that back home again. I’m trying to promise myself I won’t binge watch House of Cards…we shall see.
hugs,
Linda
Claudia says
It’s tempting, but it will be so long before we see it again – if we do – that I want to prolong the pleasure!
Barbara says
That is so cute about the soap. I remember a similar situation with the ex about toothpaste. He liked one kind and I like to switch between two other kinds. So we just kept two toothpastes in the jar on the counter. Made everyone happy.
Claudia says
We’re okay on toothpaste, thank goodness. Although we do change brands every once in a while!

I Love that movie ~ so many funny quotes. I think it’s time to watch again ;-)
I too use Mrs. Meyers and decided to be really wild (ha) and try the Basil scent…..not bad! it’s actually my husband’s favorite. I always go for the citrus smells so the Lemon/verbena is my favorite. I splurged at Christmas and bought a gift set from Williams-Sonoma and tried the Winter forest scent…. Heaven. Smells like the woods.
Claudia says
That’s exactly what Don said – so many good quotes!
I can’t wait to try more scents from Mrs. Meyers.
Annie Graham says
Wow – I love all the dialogue about soaps, candles, cleaners, etc. I use the Meyers cleaning products all the time and love the scents, I will have to try the soaps. I also use the Dr. Bronner’s liquid soaps and love them as well. Thanks for all the shares about the products. I usually pick mine up at the natural grocery store near me, but good to know the Meyers site offers free shipping from time to time. I will check that out.
Claudia says
I love discussions like this, too. We learn so much from each other. Thank you, Annie!

I have never tried Mrs Myers products but I would love to give them a try…
