Where Bloggers Create 2

June 18, 2010 at 5:05 pm by Claudia

Welcome to my teeny, tiny studio! I took part in the first party a year ago and am thrilled to be taking part again. I am creating this post far from my home as I work in San Diego for 10 weeks, so I will be visiting my studio right along with you. Since I’ve been far from home since April, I can’t take updated photos. I will do my best to explain what has changed along the way.

My jaw drops in awe when I see some of the gorgeous, big spaces many bloggers have. And I would be telling a lie if I said I was perfectly happy with my space and had no need for a larger one. I will have one someday. (Just letting the Universe know.) In the meantime, I love my little space.

We live in a tiny two bedroom cottage. With two big dogs. The second bedroom became our guest room/office/music studio. Where in the world would I be able to create? One day, my husband and I had a light bulb moment: the upstairs hallway. Yep, that’s my studio. Let’s start the tour.

As far as I’m concerned, the studio starts with this window at the top of the stairs. I used a vintage dresser scarf to create the valance and clipped it onto a curtain rod.

The window sill has little jars full of buttons.

At the top of the stairs, there is a little niche. I used to have an old trunk here. The day I realized that my sewing table would fit perfectly in this niche was the day the studio was born. I made the skirt from a Simply Shabby Chic shower curtain I had used when I was staying in San Diego last year. It’s attached with velcro – easy! That pretty fabric hides a lot of stuff.

See the skylight above my workspace? Love the natural light that fills this space.

Lambchop is my muse. I love her.

Here is a more up-to-date photo. I bought this lovely slip cover for my plain old office chair. It definitely pretties up the space. The shelf is an old mantel I had for a long time – it was propped up in a corner of our bedroom. Since it is narrow, it turned out to be the perfect shelf for this space. A coat of paint and I have the perfect splash of color in the studio.
A closer look at everything that surrounds my sewing table:

I took an old, plain bulletin board and transformed it with sheet music, paint, antiquing gel and some appliques.

Many of these little touches come from fellow bloggers. I love this blogging community!

As you face the sewing table, there is a little wall to the right. Photos are of my wedding day and of my brother and I visiting Santa Claus when we were kids, along with Mom and Dad.
Now you turn a corner and on the right is a bookcase I found at The Christmas Tree Shop. I wrote a post about my adventures trying to get that thing to fit together when I discovered it had come with two left sides!

It’s full of craft and decorating books as well as lots of theater books (that’s my profession.) The photo is of my sister and me.

Pincushions made by my blogging friend, Betty.

Since you see the cardboard backing of the bookcase as you go up the stairs, I prettied it up.

On the left is my design wall. I covered insulation boards with batting and nailed them to the wall. That’s my craft/cutting table which, thankfully, takes up very little space. I’ve made some changes to this part of the studio recently. I took down the quilt and added these:

Photos of family and friends

I made a chalkboard for the kitchen last year. Since I had an extra board and left over paint, I thought I would make one for the studio. I drilled two holes in the top and hung it with twine. I write words that inspire my creativity.

Trims, lace, crochet, one of the hearts I make

Tools in a vintage McCoy Vase
I have been drifting away from quilting and moving in new creative directions. So I have some new plans for this space. I’ll take down part of the design wall and look for a hutch or china cabinet that I can paint white. It will hold some of my supplies (the rest are on shelves in the guest bedroom closet) and will give me a whole lot of new decorating options!

My studio extends to the kitchen, where I work on my dollhouse. There just isn’t enough room in the studio. Where there’s a will, there’s a way!

Here is where I blog with my blogging partner, Scout.

So you see, you can take a tiny little alcove or a hallway or a closet and make it your creative space. You really can. I call this “My Happy Place.” Now, if it only had an air conditioner…

Thanks for stopping by! I can’t wait to see all the other wonderful creative spaces out there. Visit Karen’s blog My Desert Cottage to see more. Thanks, Karen!

Claudie, This is absolutely, positively the most charming creative space ever!!!

You have done a marvelous job & I am impressed & a little bit green with envy. I too live in a little 2 bedroom home, but there are no stairs. . . no landing. . . no place to call *studio*.

This is really lovely. Thank you so much for sharing!

Oh Claudia, I don’t know where to start– I love it all!! I recognized all the wonderful touches you’ve shared with us on your blogging journey. I also enjoyed seeing all the fabulous new changes!

You’ve made such a great creative space in the space you do have. Some of my most creative moments have come to me when I had a similar sized space. I’ve got my bigger sunroom/studio now– and well, we’re still bonding.

Maybe I’ll join the “party” next year. That gives me some time to tidy-up. :)

    Hugs,

Claudia, this is a lovely, restful and creative space!

I have a question — how did you make the table skirt? You said it was easy but I’m very much a “sewing by first principles” kinda gal. Would you consider doing a tutorial for we sewing-challenged?

I actually just heard of this party today! Maybe next year I can participate!
I love EVERYTHING in your charming workspace. I think seeing how a person can be creative when working with very little space is more inspiring than viewing a workspace that is the size of a master bedroom!

    I hope all is well!

Well your happy place definitely put a smile to my face and heart! Seriously! I thought the same thing as you with the window. When I saw it, and just that pic, I thought, oh I just love it, and I didn’t even see the rest of your work place yet. What an amazing idea to use that scarf like that.I adore the glass cheese jars holding the buttons. that makes a beautiful picture. Frame it girl! Hang it on the wall. I gasped at the material on your sewing machine and also the chair..oh my goodness! sigh…yes, it is a very happy place. Thanks for sharing.

First of all, your blog is beautiful! I love the background you used, too.

Secondly, I love what you did with such a small space to make it a create-worthy place! It’s an ispiration for me as I live in a teeny tiny one bedroom apartment with no place to create right now. My computer and printers take up my entire kitchen table so I can’t use that. Seeing what you did though, I think I will take a look around with new eyes, so to speak.

Thanks for sharing!! I’m glad I found your blog!!

I love so many things about your Studio space Claudia – your sweet dog ♥ Lambchop (my children loved Shari Lewis & Lambchop when they were little), the artwork, the b&w photos of your family visiting Santa, all the whimsy … just beautiful!

I love the ways you have displayed special photos, and I love that you have surrounded yourself with things that are special to you.

    Hi Claudia,
I love your studio, you have taken the space and made it so you. Cozy, sentimental, creative and fun (the first words that come to mind!). I can see why it’s a happy place for you to create your lovely items. Your hearts are precious, did you create them or was it Scout? Hi Scout and Riley too, of course! Love that dollhouse, looks like so much fun, I can easily see getting carried away with furnishings for it too. So happy to be joining in with you again this year, Claudia, and please send Lampchop my regards when you see her next (it will be here very soon ;)
Have to say, it means a lot knowing the background of some of your objects pictured from attending the party last year my dear friend!
Have fun at the party & can’t wait to hear about Christie’s as well from today.

    HAPPY PINK SATURDAY CLAUDIA,
I LOVE THE CHANGES YOU HAVE AND ARE GOING TO MAKE TO YOUR BEAUTIFUL CREATIVE SPACE…IT HAS EVERYTHING A BIG STUDIO HAS EXCEPT STORAGE AND ROOM TO WORK ON YOUR DOLL HOUSE. THE COLORS ARE SOFT AND WARM AND THE SKYLIGHT ADDS SUCH NATURAL LIGHT.
HOW MANY WEEKS DO YOU HAVE LEFT AWAY FROM HOME?
SCOUT IS SO SOFT AND SUCH A PRETTY WHITE AND BLACK. I KNOW HE MISSES YOU TERRIBLY.
MY DAUGHTER HAD THE RUG YOU HAVE IN FRONT OF YOUR CHAIR AND HER GREAT DANE GRACIE CHEWED HALF OF IT UP AND IT WAS A ROOM SIZE RUG.

    Hi Claudia!

I had to come by and see your sweet place. I love all your changes and seeing your sweet slip-covered chair made me smile.

For the ENTIRE TIME my children were growing up I worked out of a closet with a desk built inside. My space was not big at all and yet I still manage to turn out product to sell at shows and antique markets. The money I earned helped make it possible for me to remain a stay-at-home-mom. That small space taught me to stay organized or I’d have been swallowed up. Now that I have more room I’m an organizational fool.

Your space is lovely. It truly is! Comfy cozy and full of your lovely grace and charm.

    Thanks for sharing!

    Love to you~

    Hello Claudia,

You’re still not home. Seeing “your space” again somehow made me happy. I don’t know, maybe because I remember some of the things you have shared before – whether it has been a project of yours or you have shared from a previous post.

I remember the valance and how you decided to make it into one :-) I remember the inspiration board and when it was finished, it was beautiful to look at as it is. I remember you sewing machine and I think you have a clip of your dream sewing machine. I know someday . . . :-)Of course, there’s the doll house, your fave place to blog, and Scout! Everything is just familiar :-)

Love the little jars with buttons inside. I think it’s just cute! Love the “Claudia” play/book? How lucky you have found one with your name on it. Love both sayings (living in the moment, and seeing through things fresh) I agree! The little pink chick and bunny are adorable! Oh and I especially love you wedding day photo. I wish I could see a close up of the young bride :-) And of course, the family picture. I sure remember it too when you shared it on a Pink Saturday post as a childhood memory. :-)

And I wanted to thank you too for visiting me and leaving me such a sweet message when I needed it. We are continuing to pray for a full recovery for the both of them.

    Mizpah,
    Li

    Oh Claudia,
I love this kind of inspiration! It says “find a way” and how often do we need to hear that message?! So many wonderful touches…adore how you clothespinned those photos to the wire..and the doll HOUSE!!! That type of project is on my “someday” list. How fun. I also was inspired by your chalkboard, and the floral onlays I’m thinking you attached to your inspiration board. Thanks as well for your sweet comments and I just posted the paint color of my studio on a new post! Xo, Sue

Claudia ~ what you have done creatively with a tiny space is just inspiring and lovely and so personal. I love all of your personal touches…I thought the Santa Claus photos were vintage Miracle on 34th Street pictures! Precious. I love turquoise/teal/blue-green, so your color layout was eye candy to me the moment your blog opened up…I’m ready to personalize my blog more…basic templates just don’t reflect my personal style. So thanks for the inspiration. Thank you also for stopping by my little blog “Opened Door” to see my kitchen creative space along shared with my 3 yr old daughter…who is often an inspiration for my creations, writings and blogs!

Your spot is terrific – I love it’s “smallness” – bet you don’t lose anything! And Lambchop as a muse? I think that’s brilliant; I bet you get asked some funny questions! Thanks for sharing your space; it’s just charming.

Thank you for visiting! First I have to tell you Ralphie can visit my house any time! I love your space, did you notice we both have the table that folds up small and then opens big. It is my life saver. I like you would love some of the spaces we are seeing, people lucky enough to have a whole floor of the house.

    hi claudia,

    your space is just lovely!

i used to work in the hallway at our old one bedroom apartment (it was not even in the same universe as your beautiful space) – but i know what it’s like to work in a small space- especially when you look at the room some crafters and artists have. i still don’t have enough space and i keep telling the universe i also need more room!

oh, and i have a lambchop too!!! i think you can see her, just barely in the pic i took of my where the wild things are figurines…

    have a great week!

Your spaces are great and it’s interesting to see the changes, to watch a creative space evolving. And remember – the kitchen is a crafting room where one sometimes prepares food.

I was going to sell in our garage sale next weekend and after seeing yours I dont want to now. I am trying to finish up the list of where bloggers create link party… It is taking me a while. But I am determined. Love to drool over others craft areas… I have only been blogging for about 3 wks but I would be honored if you would stop by for a visit at http://scrappingwithsherry1.blogspot.com Take care~ Sherry

What a perfect spot to create in! Love that marvelous skylight and your sewing table tucked in the niche. There are so many sweet details in your space like the little chickies on top of the watercolor, the great photos from your wedding day and santa, and the wonderful chalkboard (and perfect quote). I’m sure lots of inspired work happens there. :D

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
