Who Rescued Who?

April 25, 2012 at 7:04 am by Claudia

I was walking to rehearsal yesterday and I saw these three words on a bumper sticker in the shape of a paw:

Indeed.

Since Don and I have been together, all of our dogs have been rescues. I believe in that so strongly. And each time we have brought a dog into our home that needed to be rescued, that needed to feel safe and loved and cared for, that needed to know that he could trust us to never abandon him, never give him away, and never give up on him, we have ended up being the ones rescued. We have been the ones that felt loved unconditionally. We have been the ones lavished with love and attention and devotion. We have been the ones who felt safe.

They are our teachers. They are angels here on earth. They are pure love.

Rescue a dog or cat. Give them a home. It is one of the most rewarding things you can do. And you, too, will be rescued.

“Amen” I have rescued cats for 30 years and our dog, Kane came from a shelter where he had been dropped off by his first owner because “he wasn’t what they expected.” “Spay and neuter your pet” is my motto. “Rescue” is a close second. Your dogs are beautiful.

I hear ya, Claudia. All the cats I have had over the years have been “rescues”. They have all been kittens until Lucy. She was older and rescued and adopted and returned. When I got her, she didn’t trust people at all. It took a year before she would willingly come to me to be petted. She has health issues and behavioural issues and I probably love her more because she is “difficult”. The love seems to be sweeter when I have had to work so hard to earn it. Kittens just love you no matter what. J

I totally agree Claudia. As you know we lost our Duffy and Penny since Christmas. It was so lonely here that we have just adopted a big baby named Rufus and I think he has rescued us. His is my clown, my companion and he has brought the bliss back into our lives.

Have a great day and hug the puppies for me,
    Sue

Shelley, our new puppy is thankfully finally asleep at my feet. Getting him for free at a garage sale might be a form of rescue. That young girl could not have taken care of seven puppies like him. He is a delight and we love him dearly. Clovis, our cat, is still doubtful of all of the above.

Who rescued who indeed? I always feel that I am the one who benefits most from rescuing a pet. I had to laugh last night as I watched my “can’t sleep tv”, House Hunters. Didn’t have time to comment on your post in regards to it, but you and all your commenters hit every mark as far as how irritating/entitled and annoying those would-be buyers can be. As some one who has an older, smaller home (not with granite, stainless steel or double sinks in the bathroom) and is looking to put said house up for sale soon, these shows make me either want to laugh or cry. I end up laughing. Sure wish they would show some more realistic scenarios. Every once in a while they do. Ann

Hi Claudia. I so agree about rescuing. My friend just sid yesterday to my doggie…..that I was so good at rescuing all kinds of things……dogs, a cat and a little boy. And I feel that I was the one that was rescued.
    Your doggies are adorable.

That has been my experience 100%! My daughter runs a rescue farm for abandoned or abused farm animals and it works the same with them. Even four of my grandkids could be called rescues. In the end, we are the ones who have benefited from opening our homes and hearts. ~ Maureen

I think rescue is a wonderful endeavor, too, and I also think buying a dog from a reputable AKC hobby breeder (meaning one who shows their dogs in conformation) is a good thing. My two dogs came from a wonderful home, and both sets of parents were AKC champions. I would not buy a dog from a backyard breeder, or a pet shop, but lots of unsuspecting people do. Those are usually the dogs that end up in rescue, even if they are “purebred.” I think the important thing is to take pet ownership seriously. Dogs and cats are not disposable commodities.

So, SO true! Years ago we adopted two little boys, ages 2 and 3.5. They came with varying degrees of fetal alcohol issues and a background of abuse and neglect.

Eleven years ago we got two dogs, one from a shelter. Having the dogs was good for the boys (now older, teaching them gentleness and responsibility) and good for me, for there was something I could do that actually got predictable results. Dogs show unconditional love. I needed them at a time when every day seemed to have a crisis.

Good ending to the story: The boys have grown up and are doing very well. So are the dogs. :-)

Our current dogs are not rescues but many of my dogs have been rescues and I agree, we rescue them and they teach us so much. Whether they are rescues or not, dogs especially bring unconditional love and THEY teach us. Whenever my husband or my voice is raised (we grew up in loud households) the dogs will let us know if we are too loud because they look at us and then leave the room. If I could rescue and have more dogs I would but 2 is enough when working full time. Our next dogs will probably be rescues.

I couldn’t agree more. Not all my dogs are rescues, but 3 of the current 7 are and the numbers have been higher in the past. And I helped to found a whippet rescue so, although no longer involved, I’ve been instrumental in helping in 100s of rescues, whichever way round they worked. Kudos Claudia, your boys are lucky to have you guys, just as you are lucky to have them :D

You are such a wise women. We’ve rescued and bought pure breeds…..they both brought great happiness into our life. Also, love your comment, on another post, how did those young people on House Hunter feel entitled. So glad someone said it in a blog. A larger house would only be filled with more ‘stuff’. As you know, happiness is found inside your heart and mind. I so enjoy reading your blog. Pat Mc

I agree, my boy I have now wasn’t a rescue, but I so wanted a golden cocker spaniel like the cross-breed one I loved as a child, so we bought him from a very reputable breeder. However I bought two some years ago from the RSPCA in Sydney and they were precious, as have all my pets been. They give you so much and lots of laughs too. Your dogs are adorable.

There is nothing quite like the love we receive from our pets. They love us unconditionally, every minute, every day. I have two dogs, one was a shelter rescue, and I love them so much that I can’t imagine life without them.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
