Big thunderstorm yesterday afternoon and more coming today. Thankfully, the temperature has dropped so it’s not so humid. We had the big storm, but it never stormed north of us where the concert series was taking place. But you have to make a call, don’t you? It went well. I went to bed early because I hadn’t slept well the night before. Last night’s sleep was much better.
We’re taking it easy today.
Over the course of the past 5 years or so, more and more wildflowers have been popping up around the property, especially around the funky patio. It looks like a mini-meadow, which is quite interesting given the fact that the surface is mostly gravel. We really enjoy the wilder look. I just clear two paths for getting back and forth to the front porch and to the kitchen door and let the rest of the area do its thing
There’s lots of fleabane.
The invasive hawkweed, which I’ve kept contained. If it’s in the flower bed it gets yanked. The rest blooms outside the bed, next to the door to the basement. I do love that bright yellow.
And there is Dame’s rocket/wild phlox.
They grace us with their presence for about a month or so and then they’re gone.
I’m also seeing yarrow blooming by the bird bath and up in the corral. And a daisy near the front porch entrance. More photos when the rain stops.

Loving the wild flowers, we’ve had lots of rain too, but the weather is cool again in the low fifties.
I’m travelling into the city tomorrow for a friend’s surprise 70th birthday lunch. Will be catching a bus, then the tram. Hope I don’t arrive looking like a drowned rat!

my sister and i saw something unusual on this morning’s walk … a large snapping turtle. by large, i mean his shell was over a foot long (when compared nearly-side-by-side to my shoe, which i measured later at home as being 10.75 inches). he was headed towards a very busy street so we called animal control and they said they would “relocate” him, but after waiting an hour, no one showed up. thankfully the turtle then turned around and began slowly taking a couple steps, then stopping on repeat in the direction of dense trees, tall grasses, lots of wildflowers and (at the base of a short-but-very-steep bank) a creek. we guessed he knew how to get home and that streets would not be good places for him. or maybe we (unintentionally) annoyed him so he headed home. glad about that, and that we didn’t get too close to him … the first two descriptors of snapping turtles in our “kaufman field guide to nature of the midwest” are “big” and “bad-tempered”. haha. anyway, fun to see him (we know turtles are out there, just hadn’t seen one for many years) and good to see him headed home.

I took a walk in a park in town, with amrit. I saw by the creek, the first wild roses bush in bloom in years. It’s our province’s flower. I’m going to check out our hillside for more blooms. I like the surprises you’re finding with your wildflowers. How nice, you take great pics of flowers. We can find happiness in small things.

Oh I miss Dame’s Rocket! Such a lovely scent. I had it in a couple places but it’s gone now, shaded out probably as things around it grew, and maybe stressed by our hot summers.
