I love New England Asters. They pop up in the fall and their vivid colors are so welcome, especially as most of the flowers in the garden beds have died. So far, they have survived three nights in a row of frost. One more to go – tonight – and then the temperatures will get warmer.
I’ve had all the porch plants inside for 2 days now. I know they need watering, so I might move them outside – 2 at a time – to water them. Then back inside as soon as they aren’t dripping any water. Or maybe at the kitchen sink. We’ll see. With the heat on, it’s a lot drier in here than they’re used to. Next week, it will reach 77 degrees for a few days (!!) and the nighttime temps will be in the forties. So my porch plants can live on at least until the end of the month.
Oh my goodness! The Mets!!!!! I watched the game last night all by my lonesome as Don had a gig. The team came roaring back and won 12-6! I was texting Don the whole time with updates on the score. I don’t know how this whole thing will play out but I love this group of guys. They remind me of the Red Sox team that won the World Series in 2004; scrappy, enthusiastic, funny, lots of personality. And they’re genuinely nice people.
Anyway, I was exhausted by the end of the game from all the worried/jubilant energy coursing through my veins. By the time Don arrived home, I was nearly catatonic.
A day off today and back at it on Sunday evening – in Los Angeles.
Raking. On the agenda. Lots and lots of raking to do in those areas where we don’t want too many leaves on the grass. The back forty we leave be. But the driveway and parking area and part of the corral need to be cleaned up. Since the frosts began, the catalpa leaves – which are huge – have been slowly falling to the ground. There are several trees on the property that have lost all their leaves, especially the black walnuts and some maples – stark reminders of winter, which is just around the corner.
Stay safe.
Happy Saturday.

I, too, love Asters. They are a happy flower.
I enjoyed Don’s TV commercial. Thank you for the link.

Suddenly our leaves here are changing and falling. A lot of our neighbors use a leaf blower instead of raking…we tried it too. And, it is much easier on the back.
I can’t believe how warm it is going to be. Hope your plants survive til the end of the month….mine too. That’s the goal.
I stopped watching baseball when the Brewers lost to the Mets…lol. Football is my focus these days. Good luck to the Mets.
Enjoy your day! ;)

I know a leaf blower is easier, but not too many people use them around here. Noise pollution, I guess. I find using my weed wacker harder on my back than raking. Something about the weight and the way I have to hold it.
Thanks so much, Donnamae.
Stay safe.

Those asters really are gorgeous… definitely vivid! It’s always nice to see pops of color like that, especially on dreary days. Yay for the Mets! Sounds like a good team and a good game! It’s fun when teams make a comeback at the end of the game… very exciting! Enjoy your weekend!
Claudia says
This comeback was throughout the game but they were behind 3-1 in the series. Now it’s 3-2.
Thanks so much, Barrie.

We have started mowing instead of raking – the leaf bits get blown to one side and spread around so garden plants are not smothered, just lightly mulched. All that twisting with the rake was hard on the back!

We do that on the front lawn – in fact, we just did. But the catalpa leaves are huge, about 8 times the size of a maple leaf, and mowing them is impossible. We have about 5 catalpas on the property.
Thanks, Ceci!

Claudia, if it’s dry inside the house for your plants, try misting them with a spray bottle twice a day (or more) or keep a couple of bowls of water near them to raise the humidity a bit.
We’re rooting for the Mets too, now that the Guardians are out of the World Series. We were rooting for their manager Stephen Vogt since he is a former Giants.
Claudia says
Thanks, Wendy. Alas, the Mets lost. Sigh.
Stay safe.

Afraid the Mets are a dirty word in our household. The Brewers, again, broke our hearts losing to them in the first playoff series.
Funny how invested you get in the hometown team watching them in first place all season making you so sure they’ll conquer the world in the post season. I”m sure your fanship of the Mets matches ours: fans since they came to town in 1970 where you watched 18 yr old Robin Yount at shortstop miss balls that rolled between his feet while sitting between your brothers in third base box seats just so you could be behind Paul Molitor. Sigh…
A couple of years ago we met Robin in the bar of a hotel here and, talking to him, all those early years came rushing back. Baseball is the best!
Take care,
Kay

I’ve learned that the post-season is a completely different animal. You can’t predict what will happen.
