Winter Woes

February 4, 2023 at 9:37 am by Claudia

Yesterday was an insanely windy day. It was relentless all day long with gusts of up to 50 mph. We’ve had that before, but the combination of wind and cold gave us well below zero wind chills. The wind drove me crazy, as well as Don. About 8 pm, I remembered that we hadn’t gone outside to start our cars, which we should have done sometime in the afternoon. So we bundled up, ran outside, and started our cars. Well. Don’s started. My battery was dead. That has never happened before in this type of weather. I tried again about 10 minutes later, but I didn’t want to crank it too much. Crap. Now, we either have to call our insurance company or buy some jumper cables. We used to have them, but darned if we can find them.

It’s below zero now, and 3 hours after Don got up, the house still isn’t fully warmed up. It will reach 20 degrees today, which is warmer than yesterday. Tomorrow, we’ll be back in the forties.

Sigh.

Just letting you know that Spoiler Alert  is now streaming on Peacock. I hope you can see it soon. It’s so close to my heart and the unexpected opportunity to act in the movie was one of the most important things to ever happen to me. And the movie itself is beautiful and powerful with brilliant performances by Jim and Ben.

A glimpse of me in the movie. Ben is in the bed, I’m speaking to Jim. And that’s Bill Irwin reflected in the mirror.

Another quick sketch from yesterday – once again, done from my chair in the den.

Stay safe.

Happy Saturday.

Maybe you’ve should look into Automobile Club. We have had it forever. You just never know when something could happen with the car.

It isn’t available in this area which is why we have Geico, which offers the same things as AAA. We used to have AAA in California.

I had the same car issues last year…..I needed a new battery which I eventually bought. In the meantime I used a small charger that I bought online for 99.00 that inflates tires and charges batteries. I used it often. Love the sketches. You inspired me and I just ordered the fine point pens you referenced in your previous post. Amazon delivers tom. I like the idea of quick sketches. I injured my back AGAIN doing what….I do not know. It hurts to move but I am working it out. It is also FREEZING here. Just hope nothing breaks…..(pipes,hoses, …..) The wind was so fierce….it rattled the house. Warmer days are ahead. I have to move….and rest my back at the same time…..Never could figure out how to do that. Well, I am going to watch Spoiler Alert and will be telling all my friends to watch. Looking forward to it. Another memory ….I had a turqouise Estrbrook fountain pen….I loved using it. The nuns always commented on my handwriting….it slanted and changed whenever it suited me. Very long time ago.

    Stay warm

My handwriting changes according to my mood. I wish it didn’t! We’ve been dripping from our pipes since yesterday, so nothing has frozen. I hope you do that, too!

      Stay warm and safe, Maria.

Sorry about your car, hope you can get it resolved easily. On another note, I’m so glad I saw spoiler alert, and you were great in your scene. The wind and cold was a nerving, and we’re still only a single digits, right now, but scheduled to be 10° soon. your sketches are marvelous!

Hi, Claudia and friends!!!! I firmly believe all of your prayers and kind thoughts have made a difference in my recovery. Yesterday I was able to actually take steps!! Sounds like such a little thing, but was truly monumental. If it is still in your hearts, I appreciate each and every one you think and/ or pray for me. ♡

Love seeing your sketches! The date on this one 2/3/23 reminds me…. the last day of this year wil be 123123!!!!! Had to share that!

We have had the cold, also, though not the wind. But today it begins warming up and into the 40’s by the beginning of the week. Take care!!!

I can appreciate how cold it must be for you and Don. Glad you have Don’s car handy if you need to get out. Sorry your car’s battery is kaput. Always something. Hope you can fix it with the jumper cables. It’s cold here, too. Our window panes in our back door were frosted up this morning. That doesn’t happen too often. It’s rather pretty. I’m looking forward to watching “Spoiler Alert”. I’m going to order it from Amazon when it’s available. Loved the sneak peak of your scene. Nice to see Chris’s comment. Still praying for her. Any apple 🍎 pie left today? Stay warm and cozy. Hugs, Elaine

that old saying about how ‘bad things come in threes’? well, if that’s true, yours should be more than over! good luck with your car and the cold weather. hopefully by now your home is as warm as it looks and feels in the heart.

i don’t know anything about peacock and streaming, but will try to get current (technology is not one of my strengths) because i very much want to see “spoiler alert” and you in it! thanks for the update on how to see it and for the screenshot of your scene. also, i absolutely love, love, love the beautiful full-circle-ness of you saying your lines to one of your former students in a big-deal movie! :)

love the sketches, too, and hope you continue with them. :)

taking it easy now for having had a very busy and productive day yesterday … over the course of seven and a half hours, i spent 90 minutes at the doctor (semi-annual shots to hopefully help strengthen my bones) and a half-hour to get there. then went to bank, two specialty stores, then paid bills, put things in the mail, dropped off donations, grocery shopping and deliveries, searched three more stores for something on a family member’s wish list, laundry, dishes, usual morning chores … then home, took a shower and spent last night with some family members, had fun and slept better than i have in a long time. and taking it easy today. :)

hope you, don and everyone else have a good day. stay safe in every way, too.

Sorry about the cold weather – we had it in Nebraska a few days ago. My sister in Maine can’t get her house temperature above 60°. Glad it is slowly warming up.

I don’t like it when I’m surrounded by big old trees, which I am. I used to like it before we moved to the country, but haven’t since I’ve seen the damage that winds can do on our property. We’ve lost too many trees to winds.

      Stay safe, Jenny!

i feel the same way, claudia! had the unpleasant experience of being in a room when the double window was pulled out by high winds/air pressure. my sweet cats were in that room with me at the time, zoomed into the bathroom where their hooded litter box was kept and put themselves into that litter box together. :( i closed the door of the then-windowless room, grabbed my phone and joined them in the bathroom (closing the door behind us). took over four hours to get the windows covered with plywood, things were a huge mess in there and the three of us were very, very scared. i hadn’t had the tv on and found out later there was a tornado maybe eight miles away (we were living about a mile outside of a small town and there wasn’t any siren out there). haven’t liked wind since except when on a sailboat. :l

glad you like the wind, jenny (as i do rain)!

stay well and have a good night.

Ooh, lovely new colors in today’s sketch!

Love seeing the ‘screen shot’ of you in the movie.

Very sorry you’re having such horrible weather and then the problem with the cars. I’d never know what to do in that kind of weather. I can’t even imagine what it must be like. And, OMG, how I hate the wind as you do, Claudia.

I saw the footage on TV about Lake Michigan with these big waves which were full of ice chunks. So much for the questions I’d always had in my mind about Michigan-Wisconsin and if the lakes ever had waves like my Pacific Ocean.

It’s all making me feel chilly. I keep copying down featured casserole recipes from the web; new ones crop up on my home page every day, apparently responding to what readers are googling in the frigid temps. Of course I don’t cook, so my recipe copies stack up, but I’m always hopeful I’ll tackle one from some of these terrific home cooks.

Let’s hope tomorrow is a better day all the way ’round. We might get a little rain tonight here in SoCalif but dare I mention something so minor, when others like you are inundated with so much that’s awful.

    Hang in there.

Well, today will be better because the temperature will hit the low 40s, which will be positively balmy after the last two days. Fingers crossed that we get my car started. It’s just so nice not to hear the steady drip of water that is always necessary when you’re trying to keep pipes from freezing.

      Thanks, Vicki!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
