A Bit More Antique Shopping

February 2, 2014 at 9:19 am by Claudia

Countdown until mattress delivery: T minus 2 days and counting.

Meanwhile, Don and Claudia had a lovely day yesterday, frolicking while out and about in a neighboring town. For a few hours yesterday, it was warmer (in the high thirties!) and sunny. I had a flash of spring fever, but only a flash, as the fact that it was only February 1st could not be ignored.

meinredshoes

Here I am, outside of Starbucks, clad in my red shoes. My hair isn’t this gray most of the time, it has a lot of brown in it, but when I’m standing under direct sunlight, wow. It’s gray.

The red shoes are unbelievably comfortable. Heavenly to wear. That’s my Calvin Klein coat that I got at a deep, deep discount a few years back. It looks vintagey and that’s why I fell for it.

We went back to the newly discovered antique shop, found a parking space that was non-metered, and spent a long time there. I got some photos but I must tell you that the aisles are narrow and it’s awfully hard to get a good photo – especially with my iPhone. But here goes.

antiqueshop1

I’ve been searching for a vintage medicine cabinet for the bathroom and this shop has two of them.

antiqueshop2

Look familiar? I have the same parakeet lamp! Donna, this shop has a pair of them! I remember how much you wanted one. Give me the word and I’ll get one or both for you.

antiqueshop3

Love this china. It reminds me of something I might find in Tina’s house.

antiqueshop4

Wonderful vintage ad for the Ouija Board.

anitqueshop5

My shoe size, though not quite that narrow!

antiqueshop6

Don loved this painting. Original oil, $650.00. Ummm, I don’t think so.

antiqueshop7

This was inside a glass case. I’m thinking I need one of these. I have a pesky double chin that I’d like to tighten up. When I asked Don if he could go along with me wearing one of these at night, I was on the receiving end of some eye rolling.

antiqueshop8

I have my eye on this vintage seltzer bottle in the most beautiful shade of aqua. It may have to come home with me.

antiqueshop9

Sigh. Very, very pretty.

antiqueshop10

I sort of fell in love with this peacock lamp. I love quirky, unique lamps and this certainly fits the bill.

This is just a minute sampling of what’s in the shop. I promise more photos in the future. Now that I know the shop manager, I’m sure she won’t mind me taking some with my Canon. There are some beautiful furniture pieces as well. It’s so densely packed with antiques of every sort that it’s hard to step back and frame some sort of photo. Gorgeous vintage jewelry, vintage packaging and military memorabilia, exotic masks, tiny collectibles, kitchen collectibles, lots of artwork, vintage maps and posters, china, pottery….you name it. And the manager has organized it all in like groups. So every display makes sense and once you realize that everything has its place, the sheer amount of inventory isn’t so overwhelming.

We found something there on our first trip that we fell in love with. We both took pictures of it on our iPhones. We talked about it when we got home. We crunched numbers. We talked about it again. I worried. Don worried. We researched the piece online and found the price to be very fair. It’s highly collectible and, more than that, it was calling our name.

We slept on it.

When we got up the next morning, we knew we had to get it. Sometimes you see something that you fall in love with and you are willing to sacrifice a bit to have it in your home. Of course, everything is relative. What is a chunk of money for us is a minor expense for others.

We bit the bullet and bought it. I’ve decided it will be our Valentine’s Day gift to each other. Now, with that teaser, I’ll leave you until tomorrow.

Happy Sunday.

I sure hope you bought the lamp no the chin strap. LOL The lamp looks just like you and would fit perfect into your space, and I bet Don would like looking at that better than a chin strap any day.

I’m on pins and needles – can’t wait to see what you found/bought for one another for V-Day!
I LOVE the seltzer bottle color – I have 3 green ones (each a different shade) – would love this one too!
This shop has some lovely items – sweet salt and pepper shakers. I use the vintage shoe lasts as door stoppers (for two doors in the cottage) – that one is great in your pic, I like them when they have metal bits as it makes them heavier and they don’t slide about on the flooring. I used to wear size 10AA but now require a B – feet got fatter like everything else! Glad ‘the red shoes’ are so comfy – they are so cute on you.
    Like your CK coat Claudia!
    Hugs – Mary

That medicine cabinet is beautiful! I love the wagon wheel, too. And that picture that Don likes,,,, it really has a bit of a Pete Seeger feel to it for me. What wonderful treasures. That gentleman certainly collected some beautiful things. Nice that he has a good store manager, too.
I have to say, those shoes look like they were meant to be on your feet. Red shoes are always such fun! Can’t wait to see what you bought!!

It does have a Pete Seeger feel to it. He lived not too far from us and many of our musician friends knew him. Don saw him on the train once.

When my husband started teaching MS music ~ back in the 70’s, I made him promise that starting in 6th grade ~ and before they were finished w/ 8th grade ~ the kids would have learned 3 songs for sure: “If I Had a Hammer”, “This Land is Your Land”, and “We Shall Overcome”. All of the kids in our little town, who went through MS here until 2007, all learned those songs. Sunday Morning on CBS today had 2 wonderful pieces on him and his music and his legacy.

Your red shoes go so well with your coat…you look like you were having a fun day! That’s quite the shop…so much eye candy! You’ve definitely peaked my interest…what on earth did you buy? Jim and I love to go in those kind of stores…you never know what you’ll find. Anything that’s blue or brass, like that planter, or that seltzer bottle catch my eye…or that pitcher between the parrots…so pretty. I would have been so tempted had I gone there! ;)

Well, as my 21-year old niece would say, you’re so “stylin” in that photo. Designer coat, red shoes. And are those RayBan “Wayfarers” I see? For me, the shades absolutely MAKE the outfit! Love it. Incidentally, if you hadn’t said so, I never would have thought your hair was gray. At all. Very ashy blonde, I thought at first. Say, could we get the NAME of that wonderful shop? Fingers crossed that there’s a website too?
PS – a bonafide heat wave here too on Saturday. It’s been SO COLD for SO LONG that our 39 degrees felt like about 70. No kidding, there were teenage boys in Bermuda shorts at the deli yesterday.

Love your entire outfit Claudia. The shop looks amazing. Funny story: A few weeks ago I donated a set of framed prints that I’d never liked but had bought for $1.50 each at a thrift store just for the frames. Never got around to using them so I decided to just get rid of them. Yesterday my cousin and I were checking out an antique store in the same town and there were the framed prints I”d just donated on the wall with and $8.50 price on each of them. You just never know what you’re going to find when you go looking. Hope the next two days pass quickly for you.

Well, you piqued our interest and after brunch at Cafe Mio, we headed to Horsefeathers in New Paltz and waltzed out with a primitive painting of an 1600 dentist extracting a tooth (painting is an 1880 copy of the original). We brought you and Don up to Jean the shopkeeper and she said you were a lovely magical couple, which I’m sure all of your followers would be in agreement with. She gave us a great price on an original 49er helmet that is slated for my mentally disabled brother’s 60th birthday in November. He is an avid 49er fan and will be stoked with the helmet, especially since they didn’t make it into the Superbowl. . Great shop, Claudia. Thank you for putting us onto it!

Thanks for sharing the shop with us – can’t wait to see what you bought! Glad you’re liking your red shoes (they look very nice on you) and I like your coat, too. I would’ve thought it was vintage. I need a dressier winter coat – the one I have is years old and casual – so I keep looking at Goodwill and Savers. They’ve had a few that I liked, but either they were wool (I’m allergic to wool) or they didn’t fit me.
