The wind went on well into the early morning hours. Even Don, who usually says he likes the wind, was over it. Relentless. But this morning, after a fairly good night’s sleep, I awoke to very cold temperatures, a sunny sky, and no wind.
Thank goodness! What a difference that makes!
A couple more Oscars things: if you haven’t seen Olivia Colman’s acceptance speech, find it online. It was perfect. Real. In the moment. Charming. Self-effacing. Her honest and heartfelt gesture to Glenn Close was the perfect salve for that moment. She’s amazing.
And if you haven’t seen her in Broadchurch, you must. Especially season one. That’s when we fell in love with her work. She’s extraordinary.
Also: if you haven’t yet seen Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper singing Shallow from A Star is Born, google that, as well. And Better Midler singing The Place Where Lost Things Go from Mary Poppins Returns. And Spike Lee leaping up into Samuel Jackson’s arms.
The best.
Okay. I recently received an email from a fellow miniaturist alerting me to the fact that I was listed in the index in a book about miniatures published last year in Great Britain. Several of us had photos in the book. I suspected it was related to the article about Hummingbird Cottage that was in Doll’s House Magazine, a UK publication. They hadn’t asked our permission, but it is from the same publisher and in my case, it’s just one photo, so I’m okay with it. (They’re sending me a copy of the book.)
In truth, I’m rather chuffed that I’ve been published in a book!
I ordered it from Amazon last Friday (because patience isn’t one of my strong points) and it came yesterday.
Sure enough, the photos inside the book are from Doll’s House Magazine and span about five years of articles and tutorials. (My article was published in 2016.)
My name is in the index and also in a list of thank yous at the back of the book.
Just one photo, but here it is:
Pretty neat! Even though I said “fellow miniaturist” above, I never really think of myself as a miniaturist. Just someone who loves to refurbish and decorate dollhouses. However, I have built a dollhouse and have constructed miniatures, so I guess I qualify. But just barely.
It’s a neat book, full of photos and text and many helpful tutorials. I can’t wait to dig into it.
The whole thing was a delightful surprise and just might help to push my tush upstairs to my desk and the forlorn dollhouse that is waiting for me to work some magic.
Happy Tuesday.

while it would have been nice if they’d requested/alerted you directly … oh, how exciting for you to be published in a book about something you enjoy and do so well! congratulations! :)

i agree with your oscar highlights.
glad you slept better. hope you and don are finally feeling 100% better and have a great day!

I slept better, though I coughed for a bit in the night, and I’m feeling better. Don is, too, though he’s still ailing a bit.
Barbara W. says
That is so exciting! So pleased for you, I just ordered a copy of the book for my reference shelf.)
Claudia says
Thanks, Barbara! Now to get my tush in gear and work on the newest project.
Wendy T says
Congrats on the inclusion, Claudia. I love reading about people’s dollhouse and miniatures experiences (which is how I found your blog and found out it was SO MUCH MORE than a dollhouse blog). Thanks for the Oscar google suggestions…haha another way to procrastinate doing taxes!
Claudia says
I will do anything to procrastinate on taxes!
KarenL says
That is really neat – you’ve been published! So glad you are feeling better. Spring is around the corner.
Claudia says
Not quite close enough, though, Karen!
jeanie says
Oh Claudia, that’s really delightful to be included! I’d be chuffed, too! And the photos are great. I’ve always loved dollhouses. It hasn’t been my “do it” hobby (like I don’t have enough of those) but sometimes I wish it was! So I love it when you share yours. My favorite places in Chicago are the Art Institutes Thorn Miniature Rooms and the Colleen Moore Dollhouse. Biggest sigh. Broke my heart that Queen Mary’s Dollhouse was closed for renovation when we were in Windsor although given I could barely walk by then, maybe a good thing! It means I have to return.
I agree with every one of your Oscar moments. But especially Olivia Colman. She was so real, just gobsmacked, I think, and I loved it!
Claudia says
We didn’t get to Windsor, unfortunately! But I love the Thorne Rooms – just saw them again last year.
Olivia Colman was as real as could be and touching and funny.
Shanna says
Yes! Broadchurch! We watched that a few years ago, but I didn’t make the connection to Olivia Colman when she spoke at the Oscars. I thought she looked familiar!
And you definitely qualify as a miniaturist! So glad that your photo was included in the book and that someone alerted you about it.
Claudia says
Thank you, Shanna. That season one final episode of Broadchurch was amazing! She just went for it.
Cheryl says
I’ve become interested in creating miniature art. I’ll look up this book to see if it has references in it.
Thanks,
Cheryl
Claudia says
There are a lot of making miniatures reference books out there, Cheryl. Thanks.
Cheryl says
Whoops, I entered my email wrong in the previous comment.

A picture of you doing the floor in your dolls house caught my attention. I am doing the same in my dolls house. Been reading your blog ever since. Thanks for all your work.
Claudia says
You’re very welcome, Elaine!
Chris K in Wisconsin says
How wonderful to be included in such a special book!! Congratulations!
Glad that wind finally blew its way through. It was way too much. It is stupid cold here again. We had a 2 hr late start for school yesterday due to wind chills again. Below zero temps for the weekend ahead ~~ the first weekend of MARCH!! Enough is seriously enough!
Hope you both continue feeling stronger. Have a good rest of your Tuesday.
Claudia says
This winter has been crazy. Completely insane! Stay warm, Chris!
Linda @ A La Carte says
How fun to be in a book but a heads up would have been nice. I loved all the moments from the Oscars you mentioned. Broadchurch has been mentioned before but after seeing her acceptance speech I’m even more anxious to watch her. What did you think of Rami Maleck’s speech? It moved me also.
Hope you and Don are well on the road to good health. Sunshine always helps.
Claudia says
I liked his speech very much. I turned to Don and said “I keep thinking you know him (because Don had a recurring role on Mr. Robot) but you don’t! They never had a scene together.
Linda @ A La Carte says
I wondered if Don had ever met him. I thought overall it was a good show and no host needed for sure. I’m reading Sally Fields autobiography right now and its good.
Claudia says
I had that book from the library but couldn’t read it in time so I had to take it back!
Judy Clark says
Congratulations! Your dollhouses are spectacular! Hope you are feeling better – both of you.

Claudia says
We are. Don’s a week behind me on this, so he’s still a bit sick. But we’re better. This thing lasted over a month!
Debbie in Oregon says
Wow, congratulations! And to think “I knew you when”!! I’d be bouncing off the walls if this ever happened to me :)
Claudia says
Thanks, Debbie!
Betsy says
Congratulations! You’re a published miniaturist! <3
Claudia says
Well, I was already published, but yes, ‘published in a book’ miniaturist! Thanks, Betsy.
Donnamae says
Well…that was a neat surprise for your dollhouse to be included! Did
Caroline express some excitement?
Enjoy the rest of your evening…stay warm, it is very cold here again! ;)
Claudia says
I didn’t tell Caroline!
It’s very cold here, as well, Donnamae!
Marilyn says
Congratulations and how exciting. What an honor to have it included.
