A Done Deal

August 15, 2018 at 9:43 am by Claudia

Well, if you follow me on Instagram or if you received an reply to a comment you left on yesterday’s post, you know that I bought the cubby cabinet. I just knew I’d never see anything like it again. The dealer who has this in her booth is one of my favorites. She also has a booth at another antique center I frequent. She always has great stuff.

Here’s another photo of it that I took yesterday, right before they put a SOLD tag on the cabinet.

Some of you seemed to think this was a cabinet I could hang on the wall! Nope. It’s a piece of furniture that is 5 feet high and just over 40 inches wide. It’s only 8 inches deep. This will be on the floor. We’ve decided to put it where the little white desk (that has become nothing more than a catch-all) is at the bottom of our stairs. There is a little cupboard that is built into that wall. I open it maybe twice a year. When that happens, we can slide the cabinet out from the wall. And I’ll have the egg cups secured with museum wax.

It was either there or up in the office, but Don pushed for downstairs so that we’d see it every day. We don’t go into the office every day.

My neighbor is lending us her van tomorrow, so we’ll go pick it up in the late morning. We have to give the antique barn a heads up so that the dealer can remove everything from the cabinet, etc.

I’m thrilled. We’ll either put the desk in storage or put it out on the street and see if someone picks it up. It’s basically been a surface for us to pile stuff on that needs to go upstairs. It holds postage stamps and the little lamp and a photograph of Scoutie with glasses on. And a basket of paid bill receipts. All of that can go elsewhere. The chair will go in storage, as well. It will actually make our path to the bathroom much clearer.

Thanks for all your enthusiastic support!

Will I have to paint the cubbies a lighter color? Not sure yet. All will be revealed.

It really feels as if we’ve just emerged from a monsoon. I don’t know the total number of inches of rain that fell during the past five days, but it has to be quite high. Endless rain. Endless. I know there is flooding in New Jersey. I’m not surprised.

But it’s sunny today. I have to recycle and run some errands and, I’m sure, pull tons of weeds. But it’s also going to be humid today, so my weed pulling might be quickly curtailed.

I don’t want summer to end because it is my favorite time of year, but I will say this has been a very difficult summer weather-wise. Extremes. Nothing but extremes. More rain than I can remember. More high temps, starting early and continuing through the summer. And lots of humidity.

It would be nice to have several days without rain so that the ground can dry out. Please?

Happy Wednesday.

from your description and previous photos of your home, that sounds like a great place to put your new cupboard … where you can see it and enjoy it every day.

i am glad you followed your heart on the decision to buy that piece. living with regrets is awful!!!

will look forward to seeing it all in place. in the meantime, good luck on getting the cupboard home (watch your backs) and have fun puttering with it all!

ps: a suggestion from someone who has moved things around with some regularity, something you’ve probably already decided upon … consider putting those carpeted coasters underneath the corners of that cupboard to make it easier to move when you need access to the built-in wall cupboard.

I was so excited when I saw your Instagram post yesterday! It will look fabulous with your egg cup collection in it! My word, you two have the best luck finding things…or do they find you? 😊
Don’t work too long in the humidity today.

I usually don’t find much at this particular antique barn – a small thing here and there, so this was a huge surprise!

Very nice find. I wonder if it was used for sorting mail? I think it will look very nice as a new home for your egg cup collection. You could cut some white paper the size of the opening on one to see if it would show off your collection better if it were white. I like the rustic wood look, but think it would look good either way.

Most likely a mail sorter. I really like the rustic wood as well. I would only paint it if I couldn’t see the egg cups well enough.

It was so much fun to go back and read all the comments yesterday. That cabinet is going to look fantastic. You seem to have the best luck finding these treasures…is it you or is it the location I wonder?

Anyway….after yesterday’s excitement…I would think a little weed pulling might feel good. But…don’t overdo. You need to save your strength for tomorrow….big day. Glad you found a way to bring it back home! ;)

I will say it. This summer has been AWFUL, weather wise. Today will be another day of hot temps with lots of smoke in the air from fires that surround us. Smoke from B.C., eastern WA, OR., and California. We only have AC in one room, so try to keep the windows closed unless we want sore throats and watery eyes. Enough.
Love your cabinet! Boy, glad you will be painting the inside and not me. I would need glasses of wine for that, and I don’t drink. But the cabinet is great and I can’t wait to see it when it is full of your egg cups.

Claudia when you showed this cabinet on IG I gasped! It’s gorgeous and its cubbies and its perfect, but $$. So when you said you went back and got it I was happy dancing for you. These treasures just don’t come along every day. I can’t wait to see it in your home and full of sweet egg cups.

I agree this has been a summer of extremes! Hot, muggy, raining forever it seems and not enough just right days. I’m hoping we have a pretty Fall. Did you take the photos of Don he posted on his IG page? They were wonderful. That smile!

I’ve got to do some battle with the squirrels and my bird feeders today! Wish me luck!

I was so happy to read your comment yesterday that you did, indeed, get the sweet cupboard! I’m also glad you decided to place it downstairs so you (& we) can get frequent glimpses! Hope the move home went well.

It was supposed to be much cooler and less humid today. Ha!! And the rain is apparently going south of Madison again. The humidity just wears me out. Quickly!! So we continue to haul hoses to water every day. But I believe that watering the plants just isn’t the same. So many of ours seem to feel like I do as they are just looking exhausted from the heat and humidity.

I hope you have fun just looking at your new purchase today and moving those things around. Wonder if it is as old as Stella?

It’s unbelievably humid here today. We just don’t seem to get a break. Either it’s a monsoon or it’s humid. I’m so over it.

I think it’s probably older than Stella, Chris.

We don’t pick it up until Thursday. It’s still in the shop.

We also have had extreme weather this year. Extreme dryness and extreme temperatures. Seems like it has been that way in the whole country. In our area there are few air conditioners, so we pull the curtains and hide away from the sun. Last night with the windows open all I could smell was smoke. They say it is from Canada. Or China. something like that.

I really want to see that cupboard filled!

Wow! You could not have found a better cabinet if you had one made for you! It will look beautiful in your cottage and is perfect for storing your collection! I love that it has glass doors to keep out some of the dust. In my house, it would also protect items from cats – but you don’t have to worry about that. What a truly wonderful find!

Museum putty/wax is great. I started using it when I lived in California and had a collection of Fiesta. I wanted to make sure my pieces were secure in earthquake territory.

I like how the cupboard is so ‘finished’ at its base; nice ‘molding’. Also, that it has the shelf at the top…so, multi-purpose! This is SO up your alley; it had your name on it for sure. It’s so perfect that it’s narrow depth and can go flush against the wall. Why not just put both your little desk AND chair in storage (the offsite unit you have, right?).**** You might need it later. I know we’re not getting rid of our storage unit til this time next year so I’ve been, in the meantime, taking more things from outdoors to keep them from getting deteriorated, in my case, from intense sun and heat; why have them bake if not being used this season, which some aren’t. (Your endless rain is something I haven’t known in SoCalif for a long, long, LONG time. Sigh.)

    I already had rain envy.

Now I have cupboard envy. I never find stuff like that anywhere and, when I’ve gone online to even look at new stuff, still nothing quite like that; I’d have so many uses for your new cupboard!

But I’m happy for ya. Have said it before, will say it again, you’ve got the eye and obviously the radar or magnetic pull to get you to the most perfect things!

****When we moved this last time, four years ago, I was recovering from surgery and exhausted with all-things ‘move’. Before the moving van even left, I looked at some stuff sitting out on the driveway which we were trying to figure out where to fit while we still had some muscle of those big, strong guys and I basically just threw up my hands (some of our measurements had been ‘off’; unpleasant surprise). We didn’t have a storage unit at the time. I gave away too much to those movers (gratis; a pretty darn big tip if you want to look at it that way) and then my husband sold the rest the next morning. And I’ve regretted it 10,000 times ever since but we just were out.of.room (at that moment). Freestanding redwood clothes closet I’d had for 25 years, children’s desk with glass-knob pulls on the drawers from maybe the 1960s (the knobs were retro/repro), small bookcase from the 1950s, wood chairs, coffee table, rolling kitchen island/cabinet and, oh, I could go on, that wasn’t all. What a waste; as I’ve culled, I want all that stuff back now! Don’t put the desk out to the curb until you’re absolutely sure, Claudia; maybe it could even live on the porch at some point, for some purpose (plants, garden implements). I’ve used small desks for lots of things; in one shed outdoors, my husband uses one as a sort of mini workbench although he has others, but it’s handy because he has the flat surface but also the drawers for tools or sand paper or whatever.

We did that when we moved to this house. Gave away a lot of stuff. We were exhausted. But I gave away my entire stereo component system! What was I thinking? The desk was a freebie that Don picked up off the street. It’s an old computer desk. I just made it look better by painting it. I have more than enough desks around here (four, not counting this one.) And I already have the kitchen island out on the porch.

Knew you’d figure out the perfect spot for it. It looks so cool, can’t wait to see it in its new home in the cottage. This summer sure has been extremely hot, extremely humid, and extremely uncomfortable. We’re supposed to get two days of rain which we need very badly. At this point I’m hoping for a long, comfortable fall so we can get out and enjoy the outdoors before we’re back confined to the house again for the long winter.
