This is the little uphill path that opens into the dog corral:
There’s Dame Scout, of course, walking around her domain.
But if you look in the foreground, you’ll see one of my favorite things – this lone coneflower. It first appeared last year. I was delighted to see that it had reseeded right along the edge of the chicken wire fence.
Just one flower.
And it came back this year, bringing a big old smile to my face.
Isn’t it the sweetest little surprise?
As far as the Chicken Wire Fence Garden, it’s slowly coming along. Some of the zinnias are starting to bloom. Some of them are still small, having been planted later in the season. The morning glories are starting to climb and attach themselves to the chicken wire. I sometimes think it should be further along at this point, but then I remember that it didn’t really take off until mid-August last year.
This zinnia just opened. Gorgeous.
But the most gorgeous of all is this girl:
Happy Saturday.
Vanessa Bower says
I love Miss Scout’s smile. How can you not adore such a happy, beautiful girl?
She seems very content with her lovely garden and the sunny morning.
Please give her a big hug from the Bower Cats. (Yes, our kitties are friends with dogs.)
Enjoy your Saturday,
Vanessa
Claudia says
I will definitely give her a big hug, Vanessa!

That she does.

OK! I’m going to plant cone flowers for next year! My zinnias are now blooming. What method do you use to water your yard? I have a small cottage style house and a huge yard. One giant shade palm, three citrus trees, one plum, two crepe myrtles, 36 roses, hundreds of iris, lots of succulents, six orchids (under the palm) lots of hollyhocks, seven hydrangeas, four hibiscus, plus a ton of blubs, lilies and wild flowers. I don’t have grass just gravel trails. It all gets watered by ME and the HOSE! The yard is scattered with small tables and chairs since I like to entertain. Please come for lunch, bring your book and stay for a visit!! If I had that cute chicken wire fence I would grow sweet peas.
Really would like to know how you water your yard and for that matter how your blogger friends water their yards too. Judy in Southern California (desert area)
PS…did i miss your blog where it said you take request for ideas to discuss? lol
Claudia says
I don’t have to water the yard very much, Judy. We get a fair amount of rain here and most of my gardens are well established perennial gardens. I can’t remember the last time I had to use the hose. As for the chicken wire fence garden, which is replanted every year, and my potted plants, I water them by hand, using a large watering can.

Happy Saturday! Browsing your lovely images started my day with a smile!

Oh good!
Chris k in Wisconsin says
Scout definitely is the prettiest “flower” in the entire yard!! Who can resist that smile?
I get impatient w/ my Morning Glories, too, as I see them blooming on different blogs. Mine are climbing well, but I have never had flowers until well into August, and they bloom until the frost comes. Just one more thing to look forward to blooming in the yard. It would be awful if everything bloomed all at once and then all faded at the same time, too. It truly is a beautiful picture as it continually fills in through the entire summer season. Oh, how I wish that Jan. Feb. and March would fly by as quickly as do June, July, and August!
Claudia says
Mine follow the same schedule as yours. I look at this way: I have lots of beautiful flowers to blog about in August and September, when the rest of the gardens are winding down. Bonus!
Sue says
I love coneflowers, planted them every year but our yard now has so many trees I have given up on anything that needs sun. So nice to see your special one.
I do agree the prettiest flower in the garden in Miss Scout.
hugs
Sue
p.s.
Pop over for a minute I finally got my closet/computer room finished and posted today.
Claudia says
My coneflowers seem to do just fine in the shade, too, Sue.
Donnamae says
Sometimes one lone flower is all you need to brighten the day. ‘Course Scout’s sweet face certainly helps! Enjoy the rest of your day! ;)
Claudia says
I will. You too!
Dottie McCurdy says
The coneflowers are beautiful, but Scout still outshines them. I enjoy seeing that girl enjoying herself. I planted a row of what was labeled sunflowers in the back of my vegetable garden. Zinnias have come up. I even rechecked thinking I had made a mistake, but nope they were supposed to be sunflowers. They are pretty, but at the back of the garden past beans and okra they cannot be seen. I have been cutting them for indoor vases so it is not such a bad thing at all. Have a great Saturday.
Claudia says
That happened to me once, Dottie. I had a packet that said sunflowers and Hyacinth Bean Vine came up instead!
Pat says
I love to find little surprises like your cone flower in my yard. That happened with me a few years ago with the Black Eyed Susan/ Rudbeckia in my front garden. Now it has been showing off every year. It does make me smile.
Beautiful Scout. She is happy in her happy garden. :) Pat
PS: Claudia- I direct messaged you a photo on IG. I don’t know if you’ve seen it yet… I need to check my phone.
–talk to you later. Oh, so glad you’re feeling better too. :)

That one coneflower is very striking all by its lonesome. It’s a brave coneflower.

…..yes, Ms. Scout is the prettiest ‘bloom’ in your garden!
I used to have coneflowers but they’ve disappeared – in fact have lost a lot of perennials in the past few years – perhaps my green thumb is too old now and has lost it’s garden magic, sigh!
Hugs – Mary
