A Mini Heat Wave

May 3, 2018 at 9:40 am by Claudia

It reached 90 degrees yesterday! Way too hot, of course, and that temperature, coupled with winds all afternoon long, has kicked off my spring allergies. I ran some garden related errands and then, because I bought way too many pansies, salvaged as many as I could and planted them in a window box. Without the window.

Robins are taking baths in the birdbath. One of the groundhogs was dining on the grass in the corral. Birds are constantly singing. And all of that makes me smile.

Hello!

This is a crabapple that has popped up right next to and under the catalpa, which doesn’t bode well for its continued existence. I didn’t cut it down last summer as I had planned to and now?

Look at all that bloom! It’s putting on such a pretty show and it would be mean of me to do anything but let it bloom. A reprieve for the little-tree-that-could.

I slept in a bit today and am finally feeling caught up. But that means I have to finish this post and take a shower as I’m going over to Rick and Doug’s for a little french toast.

89 today with storms on the horizon for this evening.

Tonight’s audience at the theater will consist of parrotheads. The entire audience. They bought out the house.

Should be rather wonderfully insane!

Happy Thursday.

Wish I could be a fly on the wall at tonight’s performance—”wonerfully insane”—indeed! I’m so looking forward to our night in Margaritaville, coming up soon. (If, by chance, you should happen to be in the city that night, we’d love to shake your hand, too!)
You know that I’m no gardener, but I love the little crab apple tree blooming next to the big old tree. Can’t they coexist?

Well, it’s growing up into the branches of the catalpa – which is okay for this year but maybe not for next!

Too bad you can’t move it to another location. I would definitely give it a try before it gets any larger. You may be surprised!

Such a pretty little tree! It has been so warm here for a few days but I shouldn’t complain. Parrotheads will rock that theater!!

Claudia, I bet Don will love looking out at the parrotheads. That sweet crabapple. Hope it makes it. Wonder if it could be transplanted. Oh yes, it seems too hot too soon. Where’s the normal weather of old days? It is raining here today…at least it’s knocking down the dust from the farmers being in the fields. Blessings, xoxo, Susie

It’s awfully close to the catalpa so I’m not sure transplanting it is an option.

Claudia, I echo Susie’s query about transplanting the little crab apple tree. It seems small enough not to have a massive root ball. When I relandscaped two years ago, the garden installers I hired were wonderful. Every plant I wanted to keep was transplanted successfully, and they were all over 25 years old. They are now thriving in more appropriate places in my garden, for which I am very happy. Hurray for parrot heads!

I’ll investigate it, but it’s right next to the catalpa, and I don’t want to harm that tree. But it would certainly be worth a try.

Yes, 90 in May is indeed too warm. It’s “only” 80 up here in Rochester, but that’s too warm too. Especially since we had snow flurries last week. Hey, French toast with friends after a busy garden day – that sounds great. If I wasn’t 300 miles away, I’d be hinting around like crazy to go along – haha!! Pass the Vermont maple syrup, please. Have a great time with the guys tonight. Peace. 🥞

French toast is always fun ~ enjoy!! And so glad to hear that you have been able to sleep. That can make all the difference in the world.

Sounds like Margaritaville will be having a wild and crazy time tonight. Bet the performers will get as much as they give from such an audience. Much joy for everyone.

It has been way too warm here, too quickly, also. We have had beautiful rain here, but not too far away they had some bad hail last night. We surely don’t need that. Hope you have a good day, kiddo.

There’s a chance of small hail today. Hoping that it’s really small and doesn’t harm the plants.

    Hi Claudia-
Sorry about the allergies- my daughter has them and they are miserable—SHE is miserable this time of year.

I know this is kind of crazy but if you don’t want to cut the little tree down you might post it on Craig’s List for free and someone might want to dig it out and transplant it—-just a thought.

Have a wonderful Thursday- xo Diana

Ditto about the possibility of transplanting.

I have a little rose bush that could. When we bought our house we thought the garage strip was barren, but then rose bushes appeared. We’ve neglected the area (am finally taking care of it) and even though it’s completely overgrown by bushes, I have a rose branch, full of roses, peeking through!

If you top the apple tree , it will spread out instead of up. Maybe, nursery will have some information on that. So glad to finally see sunshine in your area. What a crazy winter you had.

Should be a fun time in Margaritaville tonight! Could that crabapple tree be transplanted, or is it too close to the catalpa? It got into the high 70’s yesterday with humidity…and it was too much too soon.

I installed an oriole feeder today…for grape jelly…and had my first oriole already. And in crane news…looks like our pair has successfully hatched two baby cranes…too cute! More rain, storms on the way tonight…first a drought, and now…flash flood watches. Eek! Hope the French toast was good! ;)

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
