A Mini Tour of the Roseville & Blog Housekeeping

December 7, 2015 at 9:35 am by Claudia

12-7 don and scout

I took this a couple of weeks ago and posted it on Instagram. It occurred to me that you might like to see it.  Do I even need a caption?

12-7 roseville in cabinet

Since I’ve been obsessing and researching and doing a wee bit of bidding, I thought I’d begin to share the Roseville Pottery I have with you. It’s scattered around the house. We’ll begin with the interior of the china cabinet in the den.

The green cornucopia is in the Magnolia pattern. It was a gift from Sonja, a reader of this blog.

Next to it is the small vase in the Peony pattern. I won this for a great price at auction, along with the candlestick next to it, which is in the Gardenia pattern.

At the end of the first row is a vase in Snowberry.

In the back, a pillow vase in Zephyr Lily, also a gift from Sonja.

And next to it, a blue vase in the Freesia pattern.

I love this stuff. Can you tell I’ve been looking at a lot of it on eBay and Etsy? The pieces on Etsy tend to be listed at a higher price. eBay pieces are sometimes outrageously priced, but many start low and the opportunity for a steal is there. It depends on the timing, whether the auction ends during the work week or on the weekend, and, of course, the desirability of the pattern itself. The harder-to-find patterns go for much more.

I was on an informational site the other day where all the patterns were listed. Among the points covered were current availability and popularity. I got a kick out of discovering that my favorite patterns weren’t that popular at the moment. Good! That leaves me with a slight edge…maybe.

Some blog housekeeping:

• A reader watched one of the videos of Don and Dan playing their music and wondered how she could download the music. Right over there on my sidebar is a widget that says Where to Buy Don’s New CD. Click on it and you’ll be taken to the website and you can download to your heart’s content. Thanks for liking his music!

• I’ve rethought the categories in my navigation bar: Cottage Living  now includes Cottage Home Tour, Garden, Studio, and Small House Living; Craftiness  includes all my DIY posts and Feeling Stitchy. I’ve started a new category called Collecting, which, so far, includes McCoy Pottery and Egg Cups. And there’s a category called On the Road, where I’ve provided instructions on how to find all my On the Road posts.

I like this arrangement, which reflects my life and passions rather nicely.

• The winner of a copy of Dig Two Graves  is Linda! Linda, I’m sending you an email. Congratulations!

• Don’t forget to visit my post Sharing a Sweet Moment, where I rhapsodize about Marie Callender’s Frozen Desserts. If you leave a comment, you might just win a $100 Visa Gift Card!

And there you have it.

Happy Monday.

Love seeing your Roseville pottery. I have never owned any and you know I’ve fallen in love with that Blue Snowberry pattern! Yesterday at a thrift sale I found some ‘Roseville’ pottery. I didn’t look closely but three pieces for $10…of course I bought it and then started researching it. It’s a repro and not well done at all as I look closely at it. A good $10 lesson. I’m keeping one of the vases as a lesson learned and will donate the other two pieces back. I should put a note on them that they aren’t real Roseville. I know the old saying, if it’s too good to be true, it usually isn’t! At least the money goes to my favorite thrift that supports women and children.
    hugs,
    Linda

At least it was only a $10 lesson, Linda! I have one piece that’s a repro – Sonja sent it along with the other two pieces, with a message saying that she thought it was a fake. And it is. You can tell by the mark on the bottom – this one was in a different ‘font’ if you will, and no U.S.A, which was always there along with the ‘Roseville’. And the number sequence is wrong. Ah, well!

That is how I realized it was fake, the mark was in a different font and no USA. I also could not find the pattern and that was the first clue to me it was fake. I’m OK with my $10 lesson, it could have been so much more. I will be much more careful now.

My mother had a small collection of Roseville pottery, probably 5 pieces or so. She sold them quite a few years ago to a relative who was just starting a collection. My favorite is Snowberry…my mom never had that particular one. On CBS This Morning, they did a story on an 8.5 million dollar dollhouse! Yes..you read that right! It’s being displayed in New York City for a children’s charity. It was very glamorous….I was thinking maybe Carolyn was friends with the current owner, and would get a personal tour! ;)

I know about that dollhouse and have seen photos of it. I would have thought about going into the city to see it, but I’m not about to mess with NYC and my ankle!

It’s fascinating, but really???? That much money has gone into it?

Well…I don’t think that much money has gone into it, the appraiser said that it was decorated with about 30,000 different pieces. It’s been appraised at 8.5 million. It was just fascinating to me…and the detail, much like yours, is outstanding! ;)

No, not that much money but, still, a whole heck of a lot. I think the creator of the dollhouse enlisted all sorts of artists to create furniture, etc.

The other day when I was dusting and putzing with some things on the front porch, and I turned over a small vintage little planter I have… to my surprise, it is a McCoy! It isn’t my favorite thing, a Southern belle lady w/ a large sun hat and a basket….but I was surprised!
The Roseville is lovely! I wish you luck on your pursuit.
Hope the ankle is even better today, and that the trip to IKEA is in your (near) future!! We can’t wait to see the desk. Putting that together will, in itself, be its own project!! ?

Yes, McCoy made all sorts of planters and pottery that I don’t like at all. For all of the McCoy that I love, I still see pieces that I wouldn’t every buy! I know that planter, it’s sort of pretty. Anyway, I’m glad you spotted a piece of McCoy!

The ankle is aching a bit today. Maybe I did too much yesterday? IKEA has been moved until Thursday. I don’t think I should mess with those long, long aisles tomorrow.

Now that you’ve rearranged your categories, I went ahead and browsed through them and then had to stop and get to my “real” job! I’ll save my reading for this evening, but the Roseville is totally gorgeous! I don’t have any of this but have amassed a stash of English chintz pottery so I know just how you feel about the collecting, and I love each and every little scrap of it. However, my real obsession here on your site is the dollhouse, which is giving wonderful guidance to me for making over my own dollhouse. So glad to have found your site, and I hope you are feeling better today. You “sound” better!

I love chintz pottery and can totally see why you collect it! Hope all the dollhouse info is helpful, Dana. I feel better, though my ankle is aching a bit today.

This morning on CBS morning show, they did a story of a 28 room dollhouse, worth millions, see if you can get the story online it was really nice to see, but of course, I love visiting yours!

I’ve already read quite a bit about that dollhouse, Nancy. I’m curious, but anything that costs so much always leaves me less than eager to see it. Maybe it’s the excess? I don’t know.

The picture of Don and Scout does not need a caption at all….I am glad to see that she can still get out for a walk…I just love the look and style of Roseville…it would be hard to pick a favorite for me..I will tell you something else that I spy in that picture..that is your pink hobnail vase..I’ve always admired it when it goes away to work with you and gets filled with flowers..I have a few pieces of pink Jeanette Glass that are very pretty but I must sell some of my things because I need a car..I also have a few pieces of Van Briggle that I will be selling…I found a site that sells old pottery including Roseville..plus they have nice pictures of each piece for sale..I thought you might enjoy it too Claudia..It is named “Just Art Pottery” and I love browsing through it…http://www.justartpottery.com/van-briggle-pottery/8/4/ …I also think it is best for you to wait a few more days to go to IKEA…Take care!

The Van Briggle should fetch a good price, Nancy. That’s very collectible and popular, especially with those who collected Arts & Crafts era furniture and pottery.
I just encountered that site the other day during my research on Roseville. Thanks for leaving the link because I think others will also enjoy those gorgeous pictures!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
