It’s a gray and rainy day here. Tonight, the temperatures are going to plummet and I may have to face reality – never easy – and let my porch plants go. There are too many 18 degree nights coming up for me to continue to cover them. It seems colder here than it usually is in early November. I hope that isn’t an ill omen for the coming winter.
I spent hours and hours yesterday trying to figure out my photo editing dilemma. Too involved to explain, but at the end of the day, I had a newer version of Lightroom and I succumbed to Adobe’s (the creator) required new subscription servic. Even though I owned my version of LR outright, having paid for it years ago, it is no longer supported by Adobe (which means they leave us no choice) and Apple is also going to stop supporting apps that have 32 bits rather than 64 bits. Just in case you think I know what that means, I don’t. I only know I got a warning from Apple the other day saying it would soon be impossible to use on my computer. And then I screwed up royally on something else to do with editing which made for a lot of hassles. I had to make the decision whether to upgrade to something that would eventually not work or bite the bullet and upgrade to a better solution now. Oh, and I upgraded to the wrong plan, had to cancel it, and then subscribe to the right plan. This took up most of the day.
Oy.
At the end of the day I was sore from hunching over my keyboard.
Don is still under the weather. On Sunday, when we went to the bookstore, he was feeling better. Yesterday and today, he feels worse. Chest colds are such a pain in the tush. Or more aptly, the head and chest.
I’m currently reading Gaudy Night by Dorothy L. Sayers. For some reason, I’ve never read any Sayers, even though I’ve always known about her and well remember watching the BBC/PBS series from 1987 about Harriet Vane and Peter Wimsey. It starred Edward Petherbridge and Harriet Walter, both of whom were wonderful. Years later, I had the chance to meet Petherbridge (such a lovely man) and see Harriet Walter on stage in London. And – in life’s strange twists – Walter eventually ended up marrying Guy Paul, a friend of ours who was the original Grinch in the stage production of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, which premiered at the Old Globe Theater (and also starred my husband.)
As always, it’s a small world.
Back to the book…it’s wonderful! What a stylish writer Sayers was! I’m deep into it and am enjoying it very much.
I’m also about to start a nonfiction memoir that I will be reviewing next week: Body Leaping Backward: Memoir of a Delinquent Girlhood by Maureen Stanton.
There’s a lot on my plate including a couple of days of coaching in the next few weeks. I have to do some prep work.
Happy Tuesday.

I hope our weather isn’t coming your way, Claudia. We got 6″ of snow yesterday and then this morning, record-breaking cold. It was below zero this morning! My porch plants came in the house 3-4 weeks ago. It has been (obviously) unseasonably cold here in NW Illinois this fall. Can I push a fast-forward button to March?!
Sorry to hear Don is still sick. I hope you don’t catch it. I haven’t had a cold in years, but one doesn’t forget how miserable they are. Hope he’s pushing lots of water and/or tea, resting, and perhaps taking elderberry, oregano oil, garlic and vitamin D.
xoxo

My porch plants can’t come inside as I have no room for them, except for the fern and the geranium which come in every year. So I have let them die and that makes me very sad.
I saw snow flurries today, but they were fleeting.
As for Don, he’s keeping warm and drinking herbal tea and honey. His cold is not surprising, given that we were on dry planes for over 8 hours each flight, and went through two time changes, several time zones, and jet lag. The perfect storm.

My deck plants have been long gone…much like Melanie’s. We’re on our 4th snowfall of the season already…be glad you only have rain. It is downright frigid here. Funny thing is, some of our trees in the neighborhood still have their leaves!
Sorry to hear Don is still under the weather. Hope he feels better soon. Today is a good day for you settle in with a good book or two and enjoy. We have to go out and get groceries…time to bundle up! ;)
Claudia says
It’s very cold here, too.
I had to bundle up as well and go out to buy some groceries. Now I’m back and I’m settling in for the day. Thanks, Donna!

Claudia, that is the perfect place for your marionette plates! Your trip to Paris was so perfectly time weather-wise. I do love your Paris posts. You travel the way I Ike to travel – go some where and BE there. Every sight and sound is a new experience. Actually I try to remember to reset my eyes and enjoy where I live in that spirit as well.
On another note, I would enjoy seeing Don perform. Could you tell me (us) any television work he has done that we might be able to access?
Claudia says
He’s been acting in television since he was 19 or 20 so he has a lot of credits. Check out his IMDB page and you’ll get a lot of information. Thanks, Leslie.

I’ve read all the Wimsey books my library carries. I really enjoyed them. The worst thing about viruses is that they must run their course. I hope Don isn’t so miserable while he’s recovering. My daughter is student teaching in a kindergarten classroom, and had a cold for three weeks. She’s finally not coughing as much and thinks the cold has now left but the allergies are at the forefront.
Claudia says
He’s miserable at the moment, but he always does his best to remain cheerful. It’s so damp and cold today that I have forbid him to go outside! Hope your daughter feels better soon!

Hi Claudia, it’s really bitter cold and gray here today, saw some snow flurries a while ago. You sound like someone with a masters degree in computers compared to my understanding of things like Adobe I use terms and descriptions with no underlying understanding of what they mean, absolutely none! I so desperately wish it was easier. My photos need a thorough go-through and organization, and i have no idea how to go about it. I am sure I am missing some bits of knowledge that could make my technological life much easier to traverse. Have you found a good book or resource that focus on blogging and programs that are supportive and user friendly? xoxo
Claudia says
Short answer: No, unfortunately. I learn about these things by googling and reading articles, etc., but when it comes down to it, I know very little! xo

Oh, I hope Don feels better soon and that you don’t catch it!! So much going around in this crazy weather. We have had 15 inches of snow already and this morning it was 5*. The cold has really been brutal. And the snow……… well, just YUK!! My daughter said her normal 12 minute commute into work yesterday took over an hour. So over it!!
Take care of both of you, kiddo!! Stay warm.
Claudia says
I can’t believe how much snow you’ve had already! Yuck is right. Take care of yourself, Chris, and stay inside!

Hello, Love the shots of your little cottage, they are fun to see.
I have a question for you, about the wooden chair in the first picture.
I am in process of repairing and re staining a chair very similar to the one you have pictured. Would you take a picture and show what is underneath the cushion? I am trying to decide how to finish mine, with webbing or not, and would be interested in seeing how yours is finished.
Thank you for your help with this strange question :)
Claudia says
I’m not going to take a picture because it’s just wood slats. No webbing. We’ve reinforced it over the years, but that’s about all. Good luck, Lisa!

I don’t think I ever saw that BBC Gaudy Night. I remember Ian Carmichael as Wimsey but not Petherbridge. Wonder when they changed horses (and/or why?) He did do it in a radio broadcast and at least two of the BBCs. Now a mystery. Off to google!
Claudia says
Oh, Petherbridge is the perfect Wimsey! Right out of the pages of the books. You should watch them if you can, Jeanie.
Marilyn says
Sorry that Don is not feeling better. Rest in the best medicine.

Claudia says
He’s resting, Marilyn. Thank you!

Catching up on my blog reading! I am getting that notice too about apps may no longer work — it’s the new operating system that’s come out means that 32 but apps are no longer supported. I am resisting the upgrade as a result because my adobe PhotoShop Elements is still hanging in there but really won’t with the new OS.
But I will have to upgrade at some point.
