A Slow Saturday

January 13, 2018 at 9:14 am by Claudia

We’re due for a yucky day today: rain which will turn into ice and a bit of snow. There are winter weather advisories up.

Can I just go back to bed?

The snow on the ground that you can see through the window is gone now, due to higher temperatures and a heck of a lot of rain yesterday. Fear not, we’re due for more mid-week. Note to self: take price tag off pot.

This is what happens when you bring your big old porch plant inside for the winter. I’ve forgotten what this is – a dracaena? an unknown grass? – but I’ve had it in this pot for several years and I bring it inside every winter. It’s become so big that I can no longer just stash it on the floor in the office. So it’s in the hallway. There are self-seeded impatiens surrounding it at the base. Hopefully, they’ll bloom at some point this winter.

The contents of the cupboard in the office. There’s some Roseville, some McCoy, an old candy box which holds letters sent to my grandmother by her adored little sister, who died in the flu epidemic of 1918. (She lost another sister as well.) Let’s see, what else? Some glove boxes, some little pieces of pottery, a mug given to me by Christy, aka Anastasia, a putz sheep and two spun cotton bunnies made by Vintage by Crystal. Oh, and some crystal bunnies and a puff made by a former blogger who does beautiful work.

I took this yesterday as I sat at the desk for a spell, due to a desire to change it up a bit. The den seems to be my home lately, but too much familiarity can breed contempt, you know? Anyway, I hung the newest Nutting up in the office – I’ll take a picture of it today – and I putzed around that space, listening to the Kenny Rankin channel on Pandora.

Happy Saturday.

Our weather is about the same here. At least the wind seems calm today.
I did not know who Kenny Rankin was, so tuned in to his Pandora channel. He’ll be playing today as I do laundry and bake gingerbread!
Stay warm and I hope you and Don have a lovely day!

Kenny Rankin was one of my favorite musicians. Gone too soon.

it is sunny but cold here today. Yesterday it rained and rained. Appropriate for such a sad day for Mom and I. We are doing OK, I worry about her as I know she was trying to keep her Sam as long as she could. He was such a funny sweet cat. I will miss him. I’m so thankful for Annie and her cuddles. Trying to stay well so I can have my surgery so avoiding crowds. I’ll take Mom to the store but stay in the car. The flu is at epidemic levels right now. I’m looking at my cubbies and enjoying some of my white pottery collection. I need to share it soon. Happy weekend and stay warm. Hugs!

I’m so sorry. It is so heartbreaking to lose a beloved family member. It’s too soon, I know, but would she ever consider another cat?

I don’t think so. Taking care of Sam was already getting hard for her but she will love on Miss Annie when she needs kitty love. Annie loves her and comes to her when she come here.

I understand. And yes, Annie is right next door to help comfort her.

Claudia, We’re expecting an overcast mild weekend but rains return Monday and Tuesday. I’m still cat-sitting through Tuesday evening. The cat likes me (she purrs when she sits on my lap and rubs her face against my hands….we both fell asleep together on a comfy chair yesterday) but she clearly misses her Mommy. She goes up to my friend’s chair at least once while I’m there and pathetically meows at it very loudly. I usually go over to pick her up for a long cuddle and petting session and she settles on my lap or next to me while I’m reading Genius of Birds. I’m using the cat-sitting hours to write a comprehensive set of to-do’s, including phone numbers, description and action items for everything I can think of, for my daughters to follow in case of my death. It’s kind of a morbid thing to do, but necessary and practical.

Oh, so sad to hear her meowing because she misses your friend!

Yes, she sounds so plaintive! At least she likes me enough that she will curl up in my lap to quiet down and go to sleep. I’ve been cat-sitting her for over three years, but have known my friend since our children were in first grade together over 15 years ago.

Your plants are beautiful. You are such a good “mama” to them. I was just noticing this morning the Peace Lily from my dad’s funeral 2 years ago this month – which was huge to begin with – is sprouting all kinds of new leaves. Since we just started hospice care for mom, I take this as a sign, a good one. Here in Wisconsin we have had darned little snow and what little we had disappeared in 50 degree weather this past week. What an interesting winter we are having. Like you, I am focusing on changing up our nest and taking tons of stuff to Goodwill. And waiting for those garden catalogs to start showing up in the mailbox!

I have two other closets to sort out and I’m putting that off until Don heads into the city. Plus I have one more wall to paint in the kitchen!

The sun is brightly shining here,,,you would assume it’s a balmy 40 degrees at least. After all, all our snow is melted. But…you’d be oh. so. wrong. It’s actually 5 with a -9 wind chill. It’s a good day to catch up on whatever. For me, it’s a bit of laundry, and plant leaf washing…they need a shine.

That big porch plant you brought in…is it possible it’s what they call a spike? Sure looks like it. It’s normally an annual….evidently, it likes that you bring it inside every fall. Enjoy your day! ;)

Interestingly, the sun came out here – no rain and no snow! We lucked out.

It might be a spike. It’s the kind of plant you buy at a nursery as filler for outdoor pots. If it is indeed an annual, it’s an annual that has lasted at least 6 years!

Yes..exactly. I’ve bought them many times before to put as the tall item in pots. Glad the snow passed you by! ;))

Just looked it up. A spike is a dracaena! So I was on the right track.

So happy to see the snow mostly gone. Unfortunately more of the white stuff is predicted for this week.

That surely looks to be a dracaena or spike. I winter a couple each year w/ geraniums and they keep on growing. They truly are strong plants!!

It is a good time of year to straighten things up, isn’t it? As we have been sorting and cleaning we came across some papers over the past week and have found some very interesting things. They weren’t interesting at the time, but 30 or 40 years later, it is such fun to stumble upon them! Even found some great papers the kids did when they were wee. Can’t wait until the next time they are here for a visit!

The sun has been shining all day but it is oh-so-cold outside!! We don’t have a flake of snow remaining, but a couple of inches are to fall tomorrow night. At least that means it will likely warm up a bit. Hope you had a great Saturday!

It’s amazing. If it keeps going like this it will take over the house!

It turned into a sunny day with none of the predicted bad weather! YAY!

the plants look well-tended (loved). so do the mini-collections on your shelves.

even if i didn’t live in a smaller space (about 500 square feet), i could never be a minimalist… seeing things with connections to my beloved family, things with stories and sentiment, makes me happy.

love the painted flower thing resting against a wall. is it an old doorstop?

good luck with the ice and snow.

No, it’s a vintage fireplace screen (too big for a doorstop.)

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
