A Sultry Saturday

July 8, 2023 at 7:50 am by Claudia

More of this day lily, which blooms spectacularly. It doesn’t bloom for long but I must get about 30 gorgeous flowers. What a gift!

I’m wiped out today so it’s going to be a day of rest. Don and I mowed the rest of the front lawn and also the lilac side of the lawn and it was both physically tough and very hard in the dense humidity. But we knew we were going to have several days of showers and thunderstorms so it had to be done. I think we were finished by 10:30 or 11 am – so we avoided the worst of the humidity. We felt invigorated when we finished, but later? We crashed.

Today will be stormy, or so they say, so we’re going to stay inside and just plain hang out.

I started a subscription to the NY Times Crossword puzzle yesterday. I used to have one but I let it go several years ago. I’ve been missing the mental stimulation of the crossword as well as the zen-like state I’m in when I’m trying to solve it. It’s only $5/month and I figured I could afford that. I print them out on our printer. Truth be told, Don gave me a book of crosswords a couple of months ago and I finally did one of them yesterday. I was finished in less than 5 minutes. Too easy. Solving crosswords is a skill that develops with practice and I’m a bit rusty. But it’s coming back.

I’m not hearing much bird song when I first get up, but I’m a bit relieved because I just opened the door (at 7:43 am) and there was lots of bird song. I don’t want this summer to go by too quickly. I want to hear the birds and the tree frogs and the bullfrog next door. I can hear a mourning dove right now. Remember Lonesome Dove, the dove without a partner who hung out on the property? I miss him. And I miss Henry, that grand old gentle groundhog we loved for so many years.

Ah well.

Stay safe.

Happy Saturday.

Beautiful day lilies…they have a tropical look. Last week I bought a book of crossword puzzles and I’m enjoying them. I used to do the daily puzzle in the paper, but the paper just got too expensive.

beautiful flower! glad you get many of them. must be striking, especially with that color. :)

we’re still getting bird song, but it’s changing to more chatter. i hear a lot of talk when i fill the feeders on my parents’ deck and like to imagine what the birds are saying … “hey! something’s happening! … the restaurant’s opening! … that’s how the food gets there.” then, after i fill the feeders, i usually sweep the deck and imagine they are saying “hurry up, lady! we’re hungry! move along!” haha.

your plans for the day sound great … taking it easy. not always easy for me to do, but i try because it’s important, necessary. and sometimes weather helps that to happen. :)
we had a wonderfully-cool day yesterday … it didn’t rain as forecast (wah … but seriously, we are, like so many places, still in a drought) … but it didn’t even reach 70! loved that part!! maybe that will head your way and give you a break.

hope you enjoy the puzzles and an easy day. stay safe, everyone.

Yes, things change. It was a pain in the neck, but I miss our hillside feral kitty-cats although I worried about them all the time, especially too if something happened to me and they lost their food source (that one last-final ‘baby’ we had who lived to old age had never had to hunt for food in his entire life [although he was wild, of the wild, born in the wild]; wouldn’t have known what to do for food except find another human neighbor; too old and arthritic to hunt his own food). Your Henry was a jewel. When you first started posting his photo, I’d never seen a for-real groundhog. I think I kept wanting to call him a hedgehog!

I don’t know anything about the NY Times being out here in the West; however, I’ve definitely heard of their intimidating crossword puzzles. I’ve never been a crosswords person and I wish I was because anybody I’ve ever known who does them is pretty darned brainy (and it’s of course quite important with advancing age to keep the mind active with any kind of new language and, in a way, isn’t crosswords a language?!!).

I love working on the puzzles and I’m also trying to keep my mind sharp.

I haven’t seen the little groundhog I call Buddy for a couple of days. That makes me worry.

      Stay safe, Vicki.

I love crossword puzzles. We get a New York Times supplement with our Toronto Star on Sundays. There are 3 NYT crossword puzzles plus the one in the Star. I also do a couple from the Globe and Mail on-line. Do you enjoy the Sudoku puzzles, too, Claudia? Enjoy your weekend. Hugs, Elaine

I did Sudoku puzzles when they first became popular, but I haven’t done one in years. The numbers just don’t do it for me, I guess!

      Stay safe, Elaine.

The New York Times crossword puzzle is a formidable challenge. The Black Mirror episode I watched ……not watchable. I only saw one episode….The National Anthem , Don’t have the stomach to watch any more. Not something I will binge watch….like some of the other series.

We are waiting for the rain…..hope it brings some fresh air. Too humid right now. The mosquitoes are loving it.

Summertime….lazy, hot, humid. Takes some getting used to.

Some of the episodes are challenging and upsetting, but that’s what I like about it.

      Stay safe, Maria.

We were stormy yesterday so it makes sense it is coming your way. Time for a break anyway!

I take the Sunday NYT and Rick and I always do the puzzle together. Most of the time we finish or get close. I like the Spelling Bee and Wordle too. I did quit for the summer, just online. I don’t like doing the puzzle online — too hard to negotiate. Printing makes more sense.

I hate doing it online! I need to write in those letters on paper!

      Stay safe, Jeanie.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
