And now we wait. We could get up to 20 inches of snow tomorrow. We pray for everyone in the path of this storm; for safe harbor, for heat and power, for no property damage.

I was watching some videos on YouTube this morning focusing on artist studios. I was reminded of the fact that I have always managed to carve out some sort of creative space, no matter where or how I lived. In a tiny one room apartment, in my bedroom, on the kitchen table – you name it. So has every creative artist.
Early in this blog’s history, I put together a studio space at the top of our stairs, situated in a little nook under the skylight. I created a quilt or two there, assembled Don’s mini music studio there, and a host of other projects. For those of you who might not have been reading the blog in those days, here are some photos. (By the way, this space was featured in a magazine!) We were still using the second bedroom as a bedroom in those days.
A short walk down memory lane:

My sewing table was tucked into this niche (where my husband’s dresser is today.) Fabric was on the shelf unit. The mantel held my growing egg cup collection.

Boy, have phone cameras improved since these pictures were taken!
The framed piece of vintage art on the top left is now in the downstairs bathroom. Everything else is now in our shared studio space.

This cabinet was just behind my sewing niche, as you turn toward the second bedroom. It was painted khaki and blue when I purchased it. On the right of the cabinet were pin boards attached to the wall. I assembled quilt squares there. And displayed embroidery projects, as you can see here.

I framed the article about the space (from Studios magazine) as well as a little mention about the blog in Romantic Homes. You can see the original colors of the cabinet in the framed piece on the right.
Lord, I looked so much younger then!

I’m pretty sure I wrote the text, as well. I have copies of the magazines I was feature in. They’re in the pink cabinet. Hummingbird Cottage was featured in two miniature magazines.
That sewing machine is broken at the moment. And my little Featherweight has some tension problems that I have to figure out. The Featherweight lives under the big work table in the current studio. I have some patching to do on our bedspread, so I need to get to that soon.
I thought you might enjoy this look at the way things used to be.
Now, if Don would just vacate the shared office space, I’d be free to expand! But where would he put his musical instruments??? Actually, he has offered to do that, but my response was “absolutely not!” He deserves his own space as well. And let’s face it, most of the stuff in that room is mine.
Stay safe and send a little prayer our way for safe passage through this storm.
Happy Saturday.

thanks for the tour of your former studio space. easy to see why it was featured in two magazines (congratulations)! i like to see how other people organize their stuff, and fun to learn about their interests … all inspiring.
prayers will continue. be safe, well and warm, everyone.
kathy
Thank you, Kathy.
Stay safe.
I remember that craft space! I always loved it!
Thanks so much for remembering it, Kandi!
Stay safe.
Praying you and Don stay safe during the storm. We’re expecting a storm, too. I am so finished with the charms of winter! Enjoyed the trip down memory lane. Stay cozy ❄️❄️❄️ Hugs, Elaine
Thanks so much, Elaine.
Stay safe.
You used every inch of that sweet nook. Hope you don’t get too much snow.
Stay safe!
We will. 14- 18 inches. If we’re lucky.
Stay safe, Ellen.
I remember the little creative nook and always thought it looked so fun. Claudia we are all older now!! I look in the mirror and say wow when did I get old? I’m blessed to have a large creative space now but maybe too big as I have too much stuff in there. I need to do some sorting and editing. I’m hunkered down staying safe and so far warm.
Me too! I’d like to blame all the aging on Trump!
Stay safe.
I do remember that craft space…seems like ages ago. It was so cute. What’s in that space now?
Hoping the experts are way off in their predictions. And that you and Don are able to stay safe and warm. Enjoy your day. ;)
Don’s dresser is under the skylight and a cupboard that holds linens is where the cabinet was.
Stay safe, Donnamae.
Great pictures! I love the stacks of pretty fabrics and the cabinet in the hallway. I could organize all my crafting and sewing supplies in it.
Stay safe, stay warm, hope no one loses power.
Thanks so much, Lynda.
Stay safe.
I always like to tour creative spaces for inspiration. I am quite aware of how lucky I am to have my craft room, as well as a smaller niche in front of the craft room., as well as an office.
I did get a kick out of seeing your egg cups on a shelf and realizing you have a dedicated (and very appropriate) cabinet to house your collection now.
Stay safe and warm. 20” of snow sounds daunting for this West Coast person.
It’s daunting for me, raised in the midwest and living in the northeast for 35 years.
Stay safe, Wendy.
Reorganizing and rethinking space is always a gamechanger for me. Hmmm, maybe I should use some of these wintery days to do just that! If nothing else, I find projects I’ve forgotten about and get instantly enthused to be creative…
Seek peace. Or make good trouble.
Both. Peace and good trouble.
Thanks, Roxie.
Stay safe.
Sending good wishes for the storm passing. So far, we haven’t had any real snow — only an inch predicted today, but still frigid cold. We’re both going back on memory lane in today’s posts! I love seeing people’s work areas; it always motivates me on mine. (I spent the better part of Friday in my space, trying to dig through all that has accumulated over time and no longer needed!) It’s a good time for doing this. I smiled at the Romantic Homes mention and seeing the page, because I did that too with mine when they mentioned the Gypsy eons ago! It’s down now, but definitely not being tossed. It’s fun seeing how the egg collection has grown, too! I believe the spots we spend the most time in should most reflect who we are and what we love and it’s pretty clear to tell that you have LONG believed this too!
Thanks so much, Jeanie.
The storm has passed, but it was a whopper!
Stay safe.
I remember your pretty studio space and the gorgeous cabinet. You were and still are very good at organizing. I wish I was. Too many unfinished projects.
Our snow storms are pretty much the same- supposedly 18″ for us. I haven’t heard one town snow truck which is weird. I’m grateful to have a warm house and a plow.
I guess I should go organize something since there is nothing else to do! I do have a good book that I am reading… hmmm choices! ;)
Stay cozy!
In a small space you have to be good at organizing. This house is small, the rooms are small – I have no choice!
Today we dig out – there’s at least 2 ft of snow out there.
Stay safe, Betsy.
Have you heard about he first studio of Mary Engelbreit? She met her first artist and was convinced that she need “a studio”. So her mother cleaned out her linen closet and made a studio for Mary. Mary was nine. I always loved this story of how supportive her Mom was of her dreams.
Very cool, Lucinda.
Stay safe.
