A Valentine

Zoe: Will you be my Valentine?

Zoe is very shy, as was I when I was little girl. Sending and giving Valentines was a bit stressful. I have assured Zoe that she is everyone’s  Valentine. We adore her.

It took me a long time to meet my true Valentine. I’m sure glad he’s here today. We’re not exchanging any cards this year, per my request. I think Don always feels that he has to do that, because, and I quote, “I’m the guy.” But he doesn’t. Not to sound too sappy, but truly, every day is Valentines Day here at the cottage.

Yesterday, I took a trip to a local antique market. I’m looking for a different way to display the girls. They’re so jammed together right now. I could buy a cabinet from IKEA, but where would I put the sheet music cabinet? Should I add some shelves on the wall, instead? This is what goes round and round in my brain. I secretly hope I’ll find just the right vintage piece but I didn’t see it yesterday, nor last week, when I made another trip to an antique shop.

But, I did come across a total surprise – only $20, by the way:

This little cabinet! It’s not all that old (and those drawer pulls are pushpins!) Maybe it was meant for jewelry? Or maybe it was meant for a doll or two. I have no idea, but I LOVE it! I plan to install some sort of rod to hang some of their clothing. I can stash some accessories in the drawers.

Isn’t this perfect? I almost didn’t go to this shop, which is an extension of the main shop. It has changed it’s concentration to vintage clothing, which makes sense in a college town, so I didn’t expect to find anything. But, there it was, tucked away in a corner, and everything in the shop was 20% off.

Huzzah!

On a much more serious note. The shootings at Michigan State University shocked me to the core, though I suppose nothing is truly a surprise these days. My home state is Michigan, my brother went to MSU, reader Jeanie attended MSU along with my dear friend Jerry. Jeanie still lives in that area. Jeanie, I have thought of you so many times since the news last night.

I mourn the loss of lives, and the loss of innocence. Children aren’t safe in schools, students aren’t safe on college campuses, people aren’t safe in nightclubs, at the grocery store, in a movie theater. As in every case, the shooter was male.

Gun control. Gun control. Gun control. Gun control.

I have been fighting for this since my student was murdered nearly 29 years ago.

My heart breaks.

Happy Tuesday.

Happy Valentines Day.

Stay safe.

Sad about the shooting. Actually to be frank I have no words. When will somebody learn??? It has become matter if fact. A shooting. Really? Upsets me of course. On another note, I have had a good day. Lots of cards and gifts family and friends. Sweet. Little things matter. Prayers

I graduated from Michigan State. What a tragedy. Ones new article mentioned that the students had grown up with active shooter drills. And here they are, still diving for cover. Unspeakable.

The pictures you’ve been posting of your girls are adorable. I’m amazed at the detail in their outfits and shoes. So cute!

Yes, and some of them just went through the same kind of tragedy at Oxford High School. I can’t comprehend this.

      Stay safe, Lynda.

I graduated in 1970 from MSU and my daughter graduated from there in 1998. Oxford High School was just a couple of miles from where we used to live in Rochester. Pulse Nightclub was a couple of blocks away from where my daughter was living at the time of the shooting. She attended many of her friends, birthday celebrations there. I simply don’t have words any more. Had a meniere’s flare up in the middle of the night from stress, I’m sure, as my brain once again tries to cope with this. I am just so angry today at all the idiots who vote these damnable right wingers into office. Sorry to rant but I know you understand the need to at times.

These school shootings just breaks my heart. I know responsible people (hunters) like their guns. As for myself I hate guns due to the fact my brother took his own life with a gun……. On a lighter subject, love the little wardrobe for your girls it is soooo cute. Don’t you love antiquing and find something unexpected?

Sweet little valentine outfit on that girl! I started today with a surprise delivery of heart-shaped donuts. And just now I looked out the kitchen window and spied a couple of cardinals sharing the tree with a couple of mourning doves—beautiful.
Enjoy your cute little cabinet and the rest of your Valentine’s Day!

that adorable cabinet was waiting for you and is a perfect fit for the girls’ clothing and mhc! glad you found it.

also glad that you and don found each other! :)

    …

very much agree about the need for gun control. i will add mental health care, prevention (not just a words-only reaction by politicians after yet another tragedy), stricter punishment for first and especially repeat offenses and getting rid of cashless bail. it’s been my experience (as a social worker and as someone who’s made some doozies of choices) that most people don’t change bad behavior by hearing words but by feeling an actual consequence. ugh.

    …

been raining here and took a walk in it (love). heard we will get three to six inches of snow on thursday. prepared so not worried unless we get ice or sleet.

hope everyone has a good day, that you have what you want and need and stay safe.
    happy valentine’s day.

Gun control should be a no-brainer! There are just no words.

How fun to have antique stores near you! Most of the ones around me have closed.

    Happy Valentine’s Day…

To be honest, they aren’t as good as they used to be. I’ve noticed a decline in the quality of stock in all the stores near me.

      Stay safe, Barrie.

Terrible news about the shootings at Michigan State University. Why does it keep happening? Here in Canada, too.

Zoe is loved. What a cute little Valentine dress. She brightens up our world. And that is the sweetest little wardrobe. Perfect size for wee dresses. Tights and shoes will fit in the drawers. Loved how it’s painted. You won’t have to do a thing to it except fill it. Good price, too.

Oh, I found Honeydew Frozen unsweetened apple juice today when we were out grocery shopping. I didn’t buy quite enough apples so will get some tomorrow. Hugs, Elaine

dear Claudia/Don — Happy Valentine’s Day to you all !! Those MSU killings are indeed hard to hear about — I hope we NEVER become so complacent re shootings that they do not stir our emotions/our sympathy for victims/families. Totally horrific — we have a nephew who works in a lab at MSU, so the news was especially terrible for us until we heard he was OK. You are correct that this madness is happening way too often — everywhere. love that cabinet and your
    little Zoe. stay safe/healthy

Happy Valentine’s Day, Claudia and Don. And thanks for the good words. It has been a very heavy day here (after a very long night). Especially hearing of those who were not only in the shooting here but also in Oxford or even Sandy Hook. We certainly don’t seem to learn, do we? There might be some home for state legislation after this, especially now with an all-Dem house and Senate. But who knows? Rick saw the flotilla of police cars speed by last night while he was at the store — he’d never seen anything like it. So quiet here today — so much is closed and no classes/U-activities till Monday. It’s profoundly sad.

On a happier note, I love the new chest for the girls. It’s perfect for them — what a find! Big hugs.

There are no words. It appears no place is exempt, especially schools; the very places where our young people should feel safe.

Sending love to you and Rick and the Lansing/East Lansing community, Jeanie.

      Stay safe.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
