Yesterday, Don had to go into Manhattan to sign some contracts. He dropped our 13 year old car off for its annual inspection (glory be, it passed!) while he took the bus into the city.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I tackled the dreaded taxes. We end up filing for an extension every year because our taxes are complicated and usually one of us is gone during tax time. I sat at the kitchen table for 4+ hours, adding up figures for my deductions. Eventually, I broke free from the eye glazing land of sheet after sheet of paper with figures and sums and notes with most of the work done.
I had to; I would have gone nuts, otherwise.
Don, in the meantime, was figuring out his end of the deductions on his laptop while traveling on the bus. What a team.
He came home with a present for me.
Eeek! On the day of its release, no less. My TBR (to be read) pile is growing and growing with no end in sight.
This surprise was the byproduct of Don’s quick visit to B & N on the East Side (near his agent’s office) to get more books by an author he has just discovered.
He bought the book on the right at our library’s used book sale and was immediately riveted by Boyd’s prose. The other two books were picked up at B & N yesterday.
Reading material for home and away. I take him to New Haven on Sunday, where he will be acting in the Long Wharf Theatre’s production of Our Town. Then, in a few weeks, I travel to Hartford to work on Hamlet. It is that all-too-rare thing, my friends – we’re both working at the same time. And in Connecticut, only 40 minutes apart.
It’s unbelievably hot and humid around here this week. But I managed to get outside and take some photos toward the end of the day.
New Dawn in the early evening.
Two new book reviews up on Just Let Me Finish This Page. Both books are highly recommended.
Happy Wednesday.

Scout will be coming with me. And she’ll also spend some time with her dad.
Vera says
YES!! Where will Scout be? Good luck with the tax stuff — I hate that. And I had completely forgotten about “The Blue Afternoon” which is in a bookcase somewhere in our house. I loved that book so much. I need to look for some more by Boyd — let me know what Don thinks of the two he picked up.
Claudia says
Now, you know I wouldn’t take the job if I couldn’t bring Scout with me. It’s going to be a little hard on her, but she’ll get to walk in the park right across the street from my apartment. And she’ll have some visits with her dad.
Linda @ A La Carte says
Oh excitement about the new book! I’m taking my Mom to Sam’s today and hope to pick it up there!! I know you said Scout would go with you on your next work trip, now I know why! It’s been so hot here I am super ready for some Fall weather!
hugs,
Linda
Claudia says
So miserably hot this week! Just plain yucky!
Donnamae says
Good news…cooler weather should be arriving soon! How fantastic that Scout can go along! I’m sure she’ll enjoy a little adventure…new sights and smells! It is wonderful that you will both be working…and relatively close by! ;)
Claudia says
Closer to each other than we would be if one of us was at the cottage, that’s for sure!
Trudy Mintun says
I was going to ask about Scout, but I read the the other comments so now I know. I am wondering now are New Haven and Hartford close by each other. Geography of the Eastern cities in not something I know at all.
Claudia says
About 40 minutes apart.
Chris k in Wisconsin says
I do remember you saying that Miss Scout would be with you on your next adventure. If I remember the last time she came along that she did have a good time with the new sights and smells and just being able to be with you. Great that you and Don will be close by. That doesn’t happen too often, does it?
It is a lovely day here today ~ but 90* tomorrow. None of our schools have AC, so it can be pretty rough on the kids and the teachers. (Not many professional people go to work these days without AC.) But following the 90* it is supposed to be cool and sunny and in the 70’s for several days after.
Hope you were able to merge your work w/ Don’s and have the taxes completed. Ugh.
Claudia says
Really hot and miserable here today and, I think, for the next few days. Hope relief is on the way!
Nancy Blue Moon says
What a wonderful thing..both working and close enough to visit..and have Scout with you..I think I will enjoy going on this adventure with you..I don’t miss doing taxes but I do miss getting that return check every year and I surely do miss working and having people to socialize with..It must be difficult to do taxes when you both work freelance and have tax papers from all different places..Enjoy the new book!
Claudia says
It’s a pain in the tush. We have lots of receipts. Then there’s the blog. And Etsy. I’m not selling there at present, but I was in 2013!
Linda says
I spent the first 2/3 of my life in CT just south of Hartford in Middletown and raised my children i East Hampton just across the river. I miss it this time of year. The weather should be cooler and the leaves a little redder. Enjoy!
Claudia says
Actually, Hartford’s weather is just like ours. What we get, they get – just a little later. We’re as far north as Hartford is.
I’ve been to Middletown. Lovely.
Melanie says
We’ve been having hot and humid weather here, too – but I dare not complain…because you know what’s coming! I’ll take this hot weather any day over dreaded wi****. (Bad word. Cannot be said out loud. lol)
Claudia says
Oh, Melanie, I can’t even bear to think about it!
Nancy in PA says
Isn’t it funny that so many people were concerned about SCOUT as soon as they read your blog? I was one of them, too. Good thing you calmed all of us down. If only Scout knew what a huge fan base she has. Well, she’d take it as her due, wouldn’t she?
Claudia says
Scout knows she is the real focus of this blog!
Sally says
Okay I have slippery fingers … I scrolled by accident and my comment went poof!
So cute how everyone asked about Scout! She has her very own following. And she gets two vacation hangouts, it’s a dogs life, truly.
Adore Our Town! I’ve seen it three times and fell in love with it all over again each time. A friend of my mom’s told me that it was her least favorite play! Because … “it has no staging”. Oh good grief. Cracked me up.
Happy week to you!
Claudia says
Oh lord. Really? Because it has no staging? Yikes.
Don can’t get through reading it without crying. It’s such a wonderful play.
Sally says
I almost fell over when she said it. It’s all about the words for heaven sakes. The words that make me cry every time too.
Dawn says
I always dread getting things around for taxes, it’s a horrible job. Good for the 2 of you working at the same time.
