A Reluctance to Abandon the Holiday Season

January 5, 2015 at 8:52 am by Claudia

Our Christmas tree is still up. We’ve been planning to take it down today, but neither of us is eager to do the deed. We’ve had such a lovely holiday season that we just aren’t ready to let it go. We gave ourselves the gift of a new water heater, shower nozzle and heat in the bathroom, we had a beautiful Christmas celebration with presents and coffee cake and Don making Chinese food for dinner, we took little day trips that we thoroughly enjoyed, we listened to beautiful music, we read and played and rang in the New Year, and we celebrated our little girl’s 16th birthday.

Somehow, the end of the holiday season signals the harsh reality of several months of winter ahead, winter without the sparkly lights and pretty tree. Sure enough, this morning is cold and very windy with gray skies.

Since we wait until mid-December to decorate, we’re not screaming “Take all the decorations down!” by this time. We’re still enjoying them. And since I decorated sparingly this year, we’re not suffering from an overabundance of the sparkly and glittery.

Will we take it down today? It’s a bit dry, but is holding up surprisingly well. Hmmm. We’ll have to see.

I tried to get photos of Scout’s little birthday celebration, but it was evening and the lighting in the den was not all that conducive to picture-taking. Just as we did last year, we gave her a little plate of treats and peanut butter and put it down in front of her, singing Happy Birthday. She always hesitates for a moment, as if she’s thinking “Really? You’re going to let me eat off a plate? What’s the catch?”

Mmmm-mmmm! Peanut butter!

Scoutie thanks you for all your birthday wishes! I’ve been reading them to her. She had a good day, that little minx. But she’s tired today. There’s been a lot of celebrating around this house lately and, frankly, it throws off her routine.

Finally, I thought I’d share with you a photo Don took of me last week when we were eating at the diner in Millbrook. He wanted to capture an expression on my face that he tells me he sees quite often.

He put it on Facebook with this caption:

This is how Claudia looks at me when I say something stupid.
This then, is pretty much how she looks all the time.

He makes me laugh, that guy.

Happy Monday.

She’s Sweet Sixteen

January 4, 2015 at 8:34 am by Claudia

The big day has arrived.

Our little girl is Sweet Sixteen today!

Don, Scout & Claudia

She’s sugar and spice and everything nice. She’s feisty and stubborn and, at times, a handful. She’s fiercely intelligent. She’s funny. She’s playful and determined. She lives life with gusto. She holds no grudges. She lives in the moment.

She is an angel. She is the gift that has enriched our lives beyond measure.

She is a teacher. Goodness knows, I learn from her everyday.

Oh, little girl, we love you so much. We are so blessed that you chose us that day long ago. Your dad-to-be saw you at an animal adoption event and immediately dropped to his knees and said “She’s such a girl!” You had been temporarily named Smiley and your smile won our hearts and the next thing we knew, you were in our car on the way to your new home – the home where your brother-to-be, Winston, waited for you.

You’ve charmed everyone you’ve ever met. You’ve loved your two brothers, Winston and Riley. You’ve traveled across the country. You’ve raced across a beach and swum in the ocean. You’ve chased fireflies. You’ve danced and played and pounced and made us laugh. You are our magic dog, our sprite.

Though you may not run like the wind anymore, you can gallop with abandon, for the sheer joy of it. You still love to pounce. And above all, your smile is a constant, your beauty everlasting.

We love you so much, dear beloved girl. Happy Birthday!

Cottage-Grateful

January 3, 2015 at 9:27 am by Claudia

We’ve been having a lot of ‘Grateful Days’ lately.

Grateful that we found this cottage, which would be considered by many to be too small, too lacking in storage, too funky. But to us? It’s simply perfect. The sunlight pours in its many windows, the open plan downstairs flows beautifully. The kitchen has a high ceiling, perfect for my over 6′4″ husband. The den, which is sunken, has become one of our favorite rooms. Somehow, the addition of the bookshelves put it over the top. Our bedroom is tucked away under the eaves. There’s a big old wrap-around porch.

We’ve been nomadic in the past. For many years, Don’s home was often on the road. When I met him, he didn’t own much, having shed a lot of his possessions. Just a few boxes. I had lived in many apartments, adding and subtracting possessions as the current living situation dictated. I’d lived in Detroit, Philadelphia, Boston and San Diego, big cities all.

We rented for years, separately and together. Not until we moved out east did we consider the possibility that we might be able to buy a house. Our mortgage payment is hefty since we bought at the height of the market, right before everything went south. As freelancers, that has been a challenge. But it’s been a challenge that we’ve met and I’m very proud of that.

To be honest, there are times we miss renting, simply because everything is the landlord’s responsibility. That was a nice little perk, although it’s easy to look back at that with rose-colored glasses, isn’t it? There were good landlords and not-so-good landlords. Repairs that were made promptly and repairs that were never made. And always, I had the niggling little fear that we might be forced to move, that the rent would increase, that the owner would sell and we’d be searching for a new place.

In the end, the challenges of owning are worth it for us – for now. This is our place. Our little haven. The little cottage in the country I dreamed of for most of my adult years. Who knows? Maybe someday we’ll want to sell and rent a little place somewhere else. Maybe we’ll want to be rid of the constraints of a mortgage.

But for now, we are grateful. Grateful that we have this roof over our heads, that we have this little  cottage to fill with lots of color and collections and well-loved furniture. Grateful that our little family seems to thrive here. Grateful to have a place where guitars are strummed, where music fills the air, where books are read, where laughter is the best medicine, where sweet dogs can trust that they safe and loved.

Our little girl turns 16 tomorrow. I hope you’ll stop by then and say Happy Birthday to her.

Happy Saturday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
