Quilts, Books & Cheerful Clutter

March 28, 2014 at 8:35 am by Claudia

tunnelquilt1

Scoutie in the tunnel this morning. A month or so ago, after repeatedly seeing her land with a thud (it’s become impossible for her to effortlessly ease her body to the floor as she could when she was younger) I put a quilt by the chair. It provides a bit of a cushion for her. I also put one in front of the loveseat in the living room because she often sleeps there at night. Scout has always been a restless sleeper. She’s here, she’s there, she moves around a lot. And as much as I would love it if she slept on a cushy dog bed, she simply won’t. She likes the floor.

The addition of the quilts certainly won’t get the rooms in a decorating magazine, but I don’t care. Little girl’s comfort is what this is all about. Just as the addition of mats throughout the living room and kitchen helped Riley get around. They were unattractive, but they worked and they made his life easier and safer.

She’s getting a bath next week in honor of her father’s homecoming which will be a week from this coming Monday. I anticipate lots of father/daughter cuddles.

(See? The flowers have been there for two weeks and they’re still going strong.)

I’m reading a very good police detective mystery, The Keeper of Lost Causes, by a Danish writer, Jussi Adler-Olsen. I don’t remember how I learned about it, but one click later, it was loaded on my Kindle. At a discount. I see why these gosh darned eReaders are so convenient. Don’t worry. I’m still reading and buying real books, but space is limited here at the cottage, as you well know. I can only bring so many books in here. Anyway, I really like this book. The writer has a dry sense of humor and the story is really compelling.

Oh, I love reading. Love, love, love it. The ultimate escape. Life saver, imagination soarer, invitation to another world, delightful, insightful – reading is one on one. One being me and my imagination. The other one being the words on the page. We are in our own little world, the book and I. And no one will see the world created by the writer in quite the same way as me. Isn’t that wonderful?

Reading has always been and continues to be one of the greatest pleasures in my life. A thank you to my mom and to Miss Brown, my first grade teacher, for instilling a love of reading in me.

When I realize that my mom, who has dementia, cannot read anymore, it breaks my heart. She has always loved to read and could polish off a book pretty quickly. It has been a constant in her life. Not being able to read seems to be especially cruel.  I love you, Mom. I hope your imagination is taking you to worlds we cannot see; vivid and beautiful and peaceful.

I also seem to have inherited from my mom a tendency to leave stacks of reading material and paperwork all over the house. See above. My mom always had two end tables in the living room and each of them had a lower shelf. There were stacks of magazines there. One table held my mom’s magazines. The other table held my dad’s magazines. I have the same sort of thing going on here. I have a stack of reading material under the end table in the den. I have a stack of books under the table next to my blogging chair. I have a stack of things on the ottoman. And I have the stack you see on the coffee table. At some point, I get sick of it all and go through each stack, ruthlessly sorting and tossing.

But on some level, I find it enormously comforting to have stacks of things to read surrounding me. Thank goodness, Don doesn’t seem to mind. In fact, he’ll have his own stack on the coffee table in the living room when he returns.

Cheerful clutter. That’s what I call it.

Happy Friday.

When There’s Nothing to Blog About

March 27, 2014 at 9:06 am by Claudia

lampshade

I sat here this morning with absolutely no idea about what to blog about today. Truly.

I looked through my photos, hoping for some inspiration.

I racked my brain.

Nothing.

I finally found some photos to edit and figured I would simply start writing and see if I came up with anything blogworthy.

And…I couldn’t get on my site.

I tried again and again. Nothing. The server was down.

It occurred to me that maybe the Universe was giving me an excuse not to blog!

I called my host and was on hold for several minutes. And just as someone finally came on the line, the blog was back up again.

So I guess I have to write something.

The truth is, yesterday was windy and raw and the high winds went on all day. Scoutie and I hunkered down and not a whole lot happened. I talked to Don several times as I always do, I read, I messed around with some cosmetic changes on the blog, I washed the sheets, made some cornbread – nothing very exciting.

I’m ready for spring. Ready for some work outdoors, for something to jumpstart me out of the same old, same old. I haven’t been able to get motivated.

But I will.

Scoutie and I will take a walk today. That will help.

Writing a blog post every day isn’t always easy. Most of the time, it is. But today? Yikes, it was hard. Really hard.

Let’s close with another shot of Scoutie in my hat. Just because it makes me laugh.

Happy Thursday.

Potpourri on Wednesday

• It’s a gray sort of day here at the cottage. The nor’easter is headed our way, though we will be spared any snow accumulation – only a dusting. It promises to be very windy later today. I always feel edgy when it’s windy. I can never fully relax until it’s all over. But, and this is key, after all of this, it looks like warmer temperatures are on the way.

I won’t know what to do with myself.

Most of the snow has melted but there are still big piles of it on the property and on the side of the road.

• You can see what I mean in this photo, taken yesterday on our walk. I’ve started taking Dame Scout for a short walk each day. She tires out more easily than she used to, but she loves getting out of the house. We walk for a shorter distance, as well. Yesterday, I decided to give her a day off because I worry about her arthritis and the little limp that she has. I thought to myself: 3 days on, 1 day off.

But about 5:00, Scout started getting hyper. She clearly wanted something. Food? She’d already eaten. Did she have to go outside? Nope. What the heck did she want? Then it dawned on me. When I asked her if she wanted to go for a ride in the car, she jumped up on the loveseat and gazed out the window – the window where you can see the car.

I got my answer. So we went. I remember the Vet saying ‘Use it or lose it’ when talking about Scout and walks, so we are going to do our best to get her out every day now that the weather is better.

While we were walking down the road, thousands of starlings appeared again. They were everywhere. In dozens of trees, in the corn field, flying through the air. The noise they made was incredible. And at the same time, V formations of Canada geese were flying overhead. It was like being in a wildlife sanctuary. Incredible!

So, good timing, Scout!

• This article in the New York Times today, Literary City, Bookstore Desert, which talks about the exorbitant cost to rent a retail space in Manhattan and its negative effect on bookstores, was troubling. You might want to read it. In it, I also discovered that the gorgeous Rizzoli Bookstore in Midtown (in a simply beautiful old building) might have to move because the owners are planning to tear down the historic building for yet another boring glass high-rise. If you’ve ever been in Rizzoli’s you’ll will understand my shock and dismay. If you haven’t, google Rizzoli Bookstore and you will see photos of one of the most beautiful bookstores I have ever been in.

Very troubling, indeed.

• I had to go to Radio Shack the other day to get a new battery for our phone. I saw this at the checkout. A Sheldon Cooper Flash Drive. I’m sending a copy of this photo to Jim. I’m sure he knows about it – the marketing deals for these guys are huge. And the show is syndicated, so they are set for life.

I’m writing a book entitled, “When Your Former Students Earn a Heck of a Lot More Money Than You Do.”

And believe me, Jim isn’t the only one. I have a lot of former students working in Hollywood. One is the creator of Doc McStuffins. One is a writer/producer who worked on Grey’s Anatomy for years and is now developing other series. One is an Executive Producer and Writer for Modern Family. One is a producer for The Fosters. And the list goes on and on. Several are Emmy Award winners.

I’m enormously proud of all of them. Smart, talented, deserving – every one of them.

I’m hoping they will support me in my retirement. Do you think?

Happy Wednesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
