The Day after Christmas

December 26, 2010 at 3:17 pm by Claudia

Happy Boxing Day! I hope you all had a wondrous holiday. We made a special dinner on Christmas Eve and watched The Christmas Story. Love that movie. Christmas Day was lovely; we exchanged gifts in the morning after eating some of my Annual Christmas Coffee Cake. I only make it once a year. It is the best coffee cake I’ve ever had and I guard the recipe with my life. Later on in the afternoon we went over to Heidi’s for dinner. We always have a fun time with them and yesterday was no exception. Now that I’ve given Heidi and her daughters their presents, I’ll show you Obsession Scarves #3, 4 and 5.

I think they were a hit. They sure are a lot of fun to make. Heidi gave me the largest vintage pin cushion I’ve ever seen. I took a photo of it next to one Betty made. And Betty’s isn’t small.

The red fabric is sateen-like and the felt leaves are beautifully faded.

Among my presents from Don are 2 books on photography that I wanted. I’ll share more about them in another post. I have grown to love photography so much and I want to learn more about aperture and f-stops and ISO and all of those things that can be very intimidating. Hopefully, I will be more skilled by the time I save up for a new camera. By the way, I keep getting emails like this from B&H:

See the bottom row? The one I want is on the right. I tell you, B&H has somehow read my thoughts. They are taunting me once again.

I ran out to the store this morning to stock up on provisions. We are just about to be pounded with a major snow storm. In fact, as I write this, the snow has begun. It’s blowing sideways. The amount predicted keeps changing, but we are in for at least a foot or more. We’re hunkering down. Tomorrow looks to be a day of shoveling. And more shoveling. Wish us luck!

Happy Holidays

December 24, 2010 at 3:00 am by Claudia

Mom, Dad, my brother Dave and me visiting Santa
We spent this day before Christmas Eve dealing with furnace problems. It didn’t want to stay on. But, good news, our oil/furnace guy came this evening and fixed everything. The transformer has been replaced and we can relax. My shopping is done, my hand-made gifts are finished, tomorrow I’m going to watch White Christmas and make a pie or two.As we head into Christmas Eve, I wanted to take a moment to wish you all the Happiest of Holidays. Whatever your particular form of celebration – Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanzaa – I hope it is filled with joy and peace.

Gifts from Bloggers, Pt. 2

December 22, 2010 at 7:56 pm by Claudia

My dear friend Sue of Vintage Sue sent a surprise gift to me in the mail. That girl is something else. She has been such a generous friend. Sue doesn’t just send a box – she decorates the box. Here’s the back side of the box (yes, the front was also decorated.)

By the way, I always save Sue’s boxes! Sue is a true junker – she loves a flea market, an old antique store, or a great thrift shop. Here’s what was inside:

A treasure trove: paper ephemera, a vintage hankie, two beautiful pieces of fabric that I think might have been napkins, creamy vintage buttons, a pretty blue velvet ribbon, vintage jewelry, a great chandelier prism, a beautiful cuff that Sue made, more sea glass (Sue sent me some this summer) and rocks, and a piece of bark cloth! Oh boy! All my favorites. My sea glass collection is growing, thanks to Sue, who happens to live near the shore in Maryland. And I love rocks, not to mention vintage fabric, jewelry, ribbons and buttons. I love, love the cuff, Sue! The chandelier prism is hanging in the studio window already. And how about a close up of the bark cloth? This piece is truly gorgeous.

Sigh. Swoon. Happy Claudia.

I won a giveaway that my friend Kate of The Garden Bell had recently. She is a crocheter. In fact, her gorgeous posts and scrumptious photos inspired me to take up the hook again. She also dyes yarn. Those of us who won got a skein of yarn in our favorite colors. Here’s mine:

I can’t wait to make something with this! Thank you, Kate.

I treated myself to a little something from my friend Meri. She is so very talented and has been creating the most adorable shadowboxes lately. When I saw this one, I had to have it.

Isn’t it delightful? It is on the piano for the holidays, but will soon travel upstairs to the studio where I display it all year round.

Meri snuck in an extra for me, this beautiful ornament.

I have it tucked in with the silver balls and greenery that are displayed in a McCoy jardiniere. Thank you, Meri.

As you know, Don and I are far from our families at Christmas. My family is in Florida and Michigan and Illinois. Don’s is in California and Washington. We can’t really leave the dogs in a kennel as they were rescues and wouldn’t understand that that they weren’t being abandoned. And Riley needs more and more special handling. They wouldn’t do well in that sort of situation. So we make the choice to stay home here at MHC. These lovely presents and thoughtful gestures, along with your sweet holiday messages and lovely comments make my holiday brighter. Thank you.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
