Vintage Black Friday

November 20, 2009 at 1:02 am by Claudia

On this VBF, I thought I would share some old photos with you. I have tons of these – mainly because my Grandmother was so good about saving everything. The other day found me looking through the piano bench, where I knew I had some of these stashed.

Pardon my foot. It somehow snuck in my photo! Let’s look a bit closer at these – the top left hand corner is a Snap Shots album that is full of photos of my Grandmother and her friends. She must have been a teenager when these were taken and they show a side of her I didn’t get to see. On the right of the album is a photo of my Great-Grandmother…my Grandma adored her and she is so lovely in this shot. In the lower-left hand corner is a photo of my Great-Grandparents. They were a yound married couple in this one. And on the right is a photo of my Grandmother and her classmates outside their school in Canada.

This photo was inside the Snap Shots album. It is of Grandma with a dog – the family dog? I’m not sure. I only know I often hug my dogs the exact same way.

Sweet Jill sent a little treasure packet to some of us who participated in VBF. I was thrilled to receive it. Here it is:

Thank you, Jill! Have a wonderful day and stop by Jill’s blog, Gypsy Brocante, to visit everyone participating.

A Rose by Another Name Party

November 19, 2009 at 1:05 am by Claudia

I’m taking part in Sares‘ A Rose by Another Name party today. She has asked us to contribute something about a name, either our own, or a nickname, or a child’s name…or what we chose to name our blog.

Ah…that last one is near and dear to my heart. My blog name is also the name of my home. Why did I choose that name? Let me first say that our house sits on a little hill, with another hill right behind the cottage. We rather liked the hills when we first looked at the house – now we realize they are tough to mow – but we still like them.

Next, Hill is my family name. I’m rather partial to that surname and am proud to be a member of the Hill clan. Those are the two reasons for ‘Hill.”

Now..’.mockingbird.’ When we lived in San Diego we were sometimes serenaded at night by a mockingbird. I loved hearing it..all the different melodies and sounds coming out of that one bird. He trilled and sang and filled the night air with beautiful music. That is the first reason for ‘mockingbird.’

The second (and most important, in my mind): I am a great reader…I have loved reading since I was a young child. My favorite novel ever is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. To me, it is the perfect book. The story is timeless, the characters unforgettable – it is a coming of age story that deals with racial prejudice, fear of people that are ‘different,’ the love of a father for his children and life in a small Southern town. It is based, in part, on Harper Lee’s own childhood in the South and on her father, who was the inspiration for the character of Atticus Finch. I’ve always been fascinated by Harper Lee, who had only one novel published – this one. It won the Pulitzer Prize, is on everyone’s best ever list, and has been read by millions. It is the perfect novel… perhaps Lee said all she needed to say.

My dog’s name is Scout, after the character of Scout Finch. I wrote an unabashed fan letter to Harper Lee several years ago. I have several copies of To Kill a Mockingbird, but my most prized copy is one that I managed to buy many years ago which is autographed by Harper Lee. It is one of my most treasured possessions.

That is the story behind the name Mockingbird Hill Cottage. Please stop by Loveleigh Treasures and visit everyone participating. Thanks so much for the party, Sares!

The Kitchen, Part Two – Pottery & Knick Knacks

November 17, 2009 at 11:20 am by Claudia

I promised to show you some of the things I have scattered around the kitchen. I’ll try to limit my narration.Everything has been captured in its actual place in the kitchen and sometimes that makes for shadows, especially on top of the cabinets!

I have lots of pottery throughout the house – in the kitchen you’ll see McCoy, of course, some of the Fiesta that I kept when I sold my collection, transferware, flowery dishes, bakelite-handled utensils; things that make me smile. In no particular order, here we go!

The crazy bunny rabbit cookie jar we found in a little local shop. I think it is from England originally…I couldn’t resist. My favorite apple pie ever, and I am a pie lover, is from The Julian Pie Company in Julian, California. We used to get them frequently when we lived in San Diego. A few years ago, my husband had one FedExed to our home here in the East for my birthday. We saved the box. Oh, and my birthday is this Saturday, the 21st! I don’t know if there is Julian Pie on the menu, but husband has informed me that he has reservations at some special place!

I so hope you enjoyed this little tour.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
