Monday Restart

January 30, 2023 at 9:29 am by Claudia

We were pulling in our driveway after the memorial service and the late afternoon sun was lighting up our house. So I got out and took this photo.

Love when that happens.

We are taking it easy, trying to find some balance in what has become an out-of-whack life. Don has talked some more with Adrian and the feeling is if the surgery is successful, he’ll have much more freedom than he’s had for the past year or two. He’s been basically anchored to his home and the beach (they live in Ventura, CA) but even walks on the beach have often had to be curtailed because he was out of breath. We’re not sure yet when the surgery will be. In times like these, we wish we were still out in California, if only to be there with Adrian and his wife, Margaret, while all this is going on. We love it here, but we sometimes miss California in the winter – and now.

Have you seen the movie Belfast? Don and I watched it the other night and it’s simply wonderful. It’s written and directed by Kenneth Branagh and is about a family living in Belfast in the 60s. The cast is wonderful. The little boy at the center of the story is brilliant (and his last name is Hill, hmmm….my Irish ancestors came from Northern Ireland…perhaps a distant relative??) And Judi Dench and Ciaran Hinds are, as always, excellent. I recommend it highly. It’s incredibly heartwarming.

I’m trying to fill my days here with something creative. I’ve taken to doing a little pen and ink sketch a couple of times a week – I have a little Moleskin notebook that I’m using. My thought was to sketch things at various rehearsals, and I did a sketch during rehearsals for Noir (the project I just finished.) Obviously, that can always be an option, but since we’re not headed to Broadway with A Man of No Importance, there’ll be no more sketches like that for the foreseeable future. But I’ve done one of the sofa in the den and the table next to my chair. They’re impressions, really. Don says they remind him of New Yorker sketches.

By the way, Darko tells me that the two performances on Friday for theater owners went very well. Fingers crossed.

And I’m starting something I did once before long ago – way back in my San Diego days. I’m filling a notebook with Morning Pages, as talked about in The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. They are pages written first thing in the morning; stream-of-consciousness style. You write every thought that comes in your head, with no editing. Three pages, every morning. And they’re private. The goal is to clear your head for the day ahead. If you’re like me, your brain is teeming with thoughts every second and the moment I get up, my brain goes into overdrive. It’s also a form of meditation. I write them with one of my fountain pens, which makes the process even more pleasurable for me. You don’t need to reread them.

Hopefully, I’ll get back to painting soon, as well. But I’m not motivated enough yet.

Last week, on my Blythe IG account, we had a prompt for “A Doll a Day January”, which is being done by one of the Blythers. I’ve been doing it off and on all month long. This one was The Beatles. Here’s what I came up with.

Holly and Harper are examining our original 45 of I Want to Hold Your Hand/I Saw Her Standing There. They aren’t sure about these guys. We’ll have to school them in all things Beatles.

Posing these girls so they would stay erect while sitting, as well as getting the 45 to stay in place took quite a while and more than one curse word was heard.

Reminder for those of you who send me mail at our PO Box. We are not renewing it as the cost has increased way too much compared to how often we use it. So if you want to send me something, contact me. It expires tomorrow.

Stay safe.

Happy Monday.

The Week That Was

January 29, 2023 at 9:34 am by Claudia

The stunning view from the restored chapel on the Hudson River where we celebrated Rick’s life.

It was beautiful. Rick was one of the most extraordinary men I’ve ever known. (And I’ve known quite a few extraordinary men.) We arrived a little early, which turned out to be a good thing, because we got to have a few quiet moments with Rick’s widow, Michele. She’s lost a lot of weight. Rick’s battle with this rare strain of pneumonia lasted four months. He was in the ICU for four months and I’m sure she was with him every day. I cannot fathom how hard this must have been for her.

Rick came from a big family and his siblings shared stories about him. His friends shared stores about him. He was a banker who took an early retirement so he could pursue his real passions; music and art. He painted this very view that you see here – gorgeous paintings of the mountains and the river. They were incredibly detailed. He played several instruments. He had a recording studio in his home (where he produced the CD Don made with his friend Dan Bonis.) He had children and grandchildren. He was adored by his siblings, his friends, his fellow artists and musicians.

Michele was the last to speak. They performed as a duo called Open Book and they played and sang together with extraordinary harmonies. They had been together twenty years and when Michele said “How can I never sing with him again?” my heart broke. She also used the exact same words I use about Don. “He was everything to me.”

Such profound words, filled with yearning for what was.

The celebration was beautiful and moving and I’m so glad we were able to attend.

Don thinks there will be a musical celebration of Rick’s life in the future. I hope so. How blessed we were to have known him.

It’s been a tough week. Did I mention that Don was in a fender bender earlier in the week? Yeah. That happened, too.

We’re laying low today. Time to take a break.

Stay safe.

Happy Sunday.

Is this the Sun?

January 28, 2023 at 9:32 am by Claudia

This morning. Am I actually seeing some sunshine out there? You can see little bits of light shining on the sofa.

We can use a day of sunshine. There hasn’t been much at all lately, just an endless progression of gray skies. Today, we travel to a town on the Hudson River, about an hour south of us, for a ‘Celebration of Life’ for our friend Rick, who passed away a couple of weeks ago from a long battle with a rare strain of pneumonia.

And last night, we learned that our dear friend (and Don’s very best friend) has to have open heart surgery. He has been battling heart failure for a long time and the doctors want to assess his readiness for surgery. This surgery would be to install a Left Ventricle Assisted Device, which would assist in pumping his heart. They’ve tried everything else. Adrian is a fellow actor and Don has known him since both of them were in their 20s. We are, needless to say, very concerned and worried for him. He’s been through so much in his life and he’s only a couple of years older than Don.

A lot of time has been spent praying lately.

It’s all too much, of course, but we’re no different from anyone else.

Yesterday, I spent time trying to gain perspective. The cancellation of the move to Broadway, which had to do with not being able to reach an agreement between the producers and an actor, has stunned all of us. I was so looking forward to it. And the fee – whatever it would have ended up being – is needed here at the cottage. It’s one thing when this happens to you at the age of 40 or 50, but another thing entirely when you’re 70. I’m very aware of time passing, seemingly very quickly. Anyway, I communicated with someone involved in the show and felt better afterward. I still feel a bit angry, but that is slowly fading away.

Now, I’m just very sad.

I could hold out hope that the situation might change, but I doubt that it will.

So I spent the day reading and doing laundry and watching videos on YouTube – all of these being perfect vehicles for escape. And I need that right now.

I don’t have a puzzle on hand or I would have started one.

Thankful for a sunny Saturday.

Stay safe.

Happy Saturday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
