Needed: A Massive Rap on Some Knuckles

September 20, 2018 at 9:33 am by Claudia

Thank you for all of your wonderfully supportive comments yesterday. You sure can make a girl feel good. I do appreciate your taking the time to share your thoughts. They help me and I’m sure that they help other readers.

I took it easy yesterday, all the while monitoring the ongoing crap in Washington DC. Someday I’ll write about the patriarchy that pervades our culture and how it’s time for it to go. But not today. Suffice to say, I’m signing petitions, making phone calls, and tweeting at the pompous old farts who think women should be seen and not heard. A few of them (I’m looking at you, Orrin Hatch) pulled the same thing on Anita Hill. I guess they thought their performance was so magnificent that it merited an encore. I  think they didn’t learn their lesson. It’s time for a massive rap on their knuckles. And a March on Washington.

There’s a lot to do before we leave on our trip, but I’m curiously loathe to start in on a To Do list. Maybe it’s the procrastinator in me. Actually, it’s partly that, but it’s also an acknowledgment that I need a little peace and quiet right now.

Don has to go into the city tomorrow and I’m going to drive a couple of hours to visit the miniature show that I went to last year. Maybe I’ll find something for my modern dollhouse or for the new project, which I’m envisioning as an English stone cottage. We’ll see. I’ll take pictures.

Okay. I’m off. I have to drive Don to the place where he takes portraits, as the CR-V is in the shop. He got it inspected yesterday and it passed, but something on the wheels is loose. which could be quite dangerous. Gulp. So he’ll pick up the car at the end of the day.

Happy Thursday.

Fulminating

September 19, 2018 at 10:19 am by Claudia

Why that title? You’ll see later in the post.

Lots of leaves on the ground and on the roof. The very old maple starts dropping its leaves fairly early. It isn’t officially autumn but it sure looks like it around here.

Don’t tell me it’s time to start raking again. I’m not ready for it.

I had a bit of a meltdown last night. As you know, I headed out to buy jeans yesterday and, as always, it was a depressing experience. Most difficult was the realization that I had gained a lot  of weight. More than I had realized. Nothing like the funhouse mirrors in a store to shock you into reality. I found the whole experience so disheartening. I was a very thin woman well into my late forties so I was, I admit, spoiled by never having to watch my weight. All that has changed in the last 20 years and I often don’t recognize my body.

After making my depressing purchases, I came home. Don called to check on me and I shared my emotions. Later last night, as we were watching television, I found my thoughts circling back to my recent professional heartache. People I trusted completely betrayed me, each in a very particular way. The remembrance of that, along with my feelings about my body, made for a very insecure me. I guess, even though I’m usually pretty strong about what happened to me professionally, I’m not quite past the hurt.

Fortunately, Don was there and I cried in his arms. I’m feeling a little wiped out this morning but I suppose I needed the emotional release. Letting it out aids in healing.

We won’t even go into my anger over what is happening to Christine Blasey Ford, the brave woman who stepped forward, knowing it would change her life forever, to speak out against Brett Kavanaugh.  She is a patriot. Yet, her life has been threatened. She has gone into hiding to protect her family and children.

I saw posts on Twitter that gave her home address and phone numbers as well as calling her a b*tch. I reported them. But the damage was done. If I hear one more white republican male cast aspersions on her without even hearing her side of the story, automatically choosing to believe the man rather than the woman, I am going to slap someone – preferably, one of the smug members of the Senate Judiciary Committee. This is also coming from some women, which is even more appalling.

What have we come to? Death threats? Publishing private information? (Also called doxxing.) And then they have the gall to say (every time) “Why didn’t she come forward sooner?”

F them.

It happens rarely now on the blog, but it did happen the other day, so I will reiterate this. If, by this time, anyone supporting the liar-in-chief is still reading this blog and leaves a comment in support of IT, the comment is deleted and the commenter is blocked. This is my piece of real estate on the web. I pay for it. We would not invite anyone who supports that evil thing into our cottage because that support means tacit or overt agreement with a whole litany of evil things; bigotry, racism, misogyny, white nationalism, sexual assault, putting 12,800 children in cages, stealing children from their families, xenophobia, lying incessantly, trying to take away our rights, mocking the disabled, mocking a war hero – you can fill in the rest of the blanks. Not invited into my home on the web either. The time when I would try to have meaningful dialogue with a supporter is long past. It isn’t possible. It isn’t worth my time.

Okay. Deep breath.

Let’s close with a pretty fading zinnia. So lovely.

That beauty is what I’ll focus on for the rest of the day, partly to preserve my sanity, but also to remind myself of what truly matters.

Happy Wednesday.

Tuesday Thoughts

September 18, 2018 at 10:59 am by Claudia

• I took this yesterday. Today, we have a lot of rain coming down, very heavy at times. There’s a flash flood watch through tomorrow. I’m not especially fond of rainy days, considering the excessive amount of rain we’ve had this year, but the cottage does feel nice and cozy at the moment.

• Don and I practiced some French phrases this morning. I found a great little truly pocket-sized book,  French Phrasebook & Dictionary – published by Lonely Planet. It really has just about anything you might need as a tourist visiting France. I would be able to get by without it, as I’m finding my long-ago French skills returning, but I sometimes screw up the word order. Don wants his own copy, so I’ll get one for him at B & N, which is where I found my copy. It’s well thought out and organized and so, so helpful!

• Critics. We’ve talked about them a lot this year, haven’t we? I never read critics and I find the influence they have troubling, to say the least. Any critic, try as he/she might to do otherwise, writes from a subjective point of view. The good critics try to take themselves out of it and speak to the experience in broader terms. But the bad ones are all about ego and judgment. Like the critic at the New York Times, Jesse Green.

This past Sunday two productions closed on Broadway. One of them was Getting the Band Back Together, directed by a friend of ours. We never got to see it, but many actor friends of ours did and they all loved it. I kept reading glowing reports from them on Instagram. I heard nothing but raves.

It closed after only 40 performances. While there were most likely other factors, the main reason? Jesse Green, who wrote a scathing review. So. Here we go again. Even though audiences loved it, couldn’t say enough about it, Green’s review effectively tanked it. They ran for only five weeks.

Actors, crew, house staff, stage management – all out of work. Future audiences deprived of a delightful experience. All because of a critic and, I’ll be frank, one with an agenda.

Let’s hope, for everyone’s sake, that Jesse Green and I never meet. I could end up in the slammer.

• Do I gird my loins and venture out to buy jeans today? That’s the big question. I’ve gained some weight and I need to go up a size, something I’ve been dreading and avoiding, but I also realize I need to feel comfortable and I don’t at the moment. Do I say, “Screw it, it’s a rainy day, why not go with it and do some shopping?”

• Didn’t watch the Emmys. We found, even though we both know some of the nominees, that we weren’t remotely interested. I’m less and less interested in awards shows nowadays. Instead, we watched an episode of The Great British Baking Show  and The Goodbye Girl  (one of my favorite movies) on TCM OnDemand. A perfect evening!

We’ll see.

Happy Tuesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
