I had no idea what day of the week it was when I woke up this morning. Monday? Saturday?
I finally hit on Sunday.
Where am I?
I feel like I’m in Brigadoon. Out of the fog, a magical and utterly charming little town springs up on the shores of a lake. Since it’s very foggy this morning, I am going to go with that fantasy. Chautauqua is by far the prettiest place I’ve ever coached. No contest.
Today is my day off, so I will be walking around Chautauqua taking iPhone pictures. I am now regretting my decision not to bring my big girl camera. I keep looking for it. It feels like I’m missing an appendage. But at the last minute, with a full suitcase and a large canvas bag filled with laptop, paperwork, chargers, and back up hard drive, I just couldn’t face the task of trying to fit it in.
Live and learn.
I picked some daisies from the edge of the road and put them in a plastic glass which is now a vase. No, I’m not a member of the Chautauqua Golf Club.
How about some more pictures of what’s blooming back at the ranch? I miss my garden. But I don’t miss all the weeds that have taken up residence after all the rain we’ve had this week.
The catalpas are about to bloom. I won’t be there for that. Sob.
The spirea was just starting to bloom when I left.
I told Don to go cut some peonies and put them in a vase. I’m sure the rains have beaten them down to the ground and I hate to think of them lying there. If I was home, I’d have taken care of that.
Sigh. So gloriously beautiful.
It’s Father’s Day. Happy day to my dad and to the father of this one:
I miss that little scamp. Fortunately, the stage manager has a dog named Stella. If you can’t find me at rehearsal, I’m probably petting Stella and scratching her tummy.
A quick story: there is a scene in the play where the Younger family is packing their things, preparing for a move. The young actress who is playing Ruth Younger has a lot of stage business to do during that scene. While she’s talking, she’s constantly packing things from the living room. During the staging of the scene, she grabbed the 1950s-era phone from the table, ready to shove it in a box. The director said, “Whoa! You can’t pack that.” She looked surprised. So we proceeded to explain to her that there was a time when you didn’t own your phone, when you actually rented it from the phone company.
That was an entirely foreign concept to her.
Boy, do I feel old!
(You can follow along on my Instagram feed if you want to see the most recent photos of my adventure here in Chautauqua.
Happy Sunday.

Lovely pics! Isn’t that where the Clintons have one of their homes? (or perhaps I’m wrong on that). I smiled at you petting another dog when you’re away from home. I do the same thing. Always wish they were along, but sometimes it’s impossible. Have a lovely day, Claudia.
Claudia says
No, that’s Chappaqua. It’s in Westchester County, where we used to live.
Debra says
Ha, I know what you mean about the phone. I sure remember it too! I’m enjoying all your beautiful photos from Chautauqua!
Claudia says
Thanks, Debra!
Dottie in Missouri says
Did some house research yesterday on your little town! A lot of those big houses are broken into Condo units with 1 bedroom! It is a truly lovely place. Enjoy your visit and the Work!
Claudia says
Lots of those condo units seem to be on the far north and south sides of Chautauqua. The really old homes in the center of town are still predominately one family, I think. But they are rented out a lot, because most families can’t spend an entire summer there. Apparently, property taxes are really high, so I bet renting them out helps defray those costs!
Dawn says
Have a good day off, and take lots of pics. Pinning!
Claudia says
Thanks, Dawn! Got your phone message. Maybe we can talk later today.
Doris says

I wouldn’t mind waking up in Chautauqua..or Brigadoon..lol..Happy Fathers Day to Don..I hope you and Scout have a good day together!
Claudia says
I think he’s going to do a little hiking. Scout somehow managed to hide a Father’s Day card for her dad and then instructed me to tell him where to look for it. He was very pleased!
Nancy Blue Moon says
That Scoutie is quite the clever girl..lol
Claudia says
She’s a Border Collie. They’re very smart.
Janet in Rochester says
If the daisy photo is an iPhone picture, then I have GOT to start saving for an iPhone. Wow! Never would have thought a phone could take such high-quality pictures. And the actress who packed the phone? Hilarious! Next she needs to see record players, vinyl LPs, cassette tapes, postal stamps, paper letters, encyclopedias and paper bank checks – LOL. Have a great day off!
Claudia says
Yes, that’s an iPhone picture, Janet. They really do take very good quality photos!
I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw her packing that phone. Made me laugh out loud!
Donnamae says
Great flower pics! Have a fun day exploring…I’m trusting the fog/mist is lifting! And if it’s any comfort at all…I remember that phone situation too! ;)
Claudia says
The fog and mist lifted and it is an absolutely picture-perfect day!

Roses are awfully lovely, Jane – that’s for sure! Had a great day off – just came home to make some lunch and rest a bit.
Melanie says
Enjoy your day off…look forward to seeing your pics later since I’m not familiar with that area. I remember rotary phones but I don’t remember them being rented!
Claudia says
Oh, my dad worked for the phone company for 40 years. I know all about that stuff!
Judy Clark says
I still have a dial wall Princess phone in my kitchen. Can’t get it off of the wall, but now I kinda enjoy it. The kids across the street think it is a real novelty. Enjoy your time in that beautiful place.
Judy
Claudia says
I will, Judy. I love rotary dial phones!
Nancy Moreland says
I remember that about the phone and I believe the phone company would also charge you per phone also. When I was little, I remember I had to hide one of the phones because the phone company was coming out to the house! Great pictures, flowers are so pretty.
hugs
Claudia says
Since Dad worked for Michigan Bell, we got ours for free!
Chris k in Wisconsin says
Yes, there are many things the “youngsters” have never known. That is a great example. Your flower pictures are wonderful and we thank you for sharing with us. Amazing what quality of pictures the phones can now take. I bet that young lady never had to wait to have pictures developed, either!! Hope your entire day was a diamond!
Claudia says
The flower pictures were taken with my big girl camera, Chris. Except for the daisies – that was with the iPhone. xo
LauraC says
I have an old dial wall phone in my 1964 kitchen (modern appliances, tho, I’m afraid) just like I had growing up. You wouldn’t believe how nice it is to dial the number you want and to hear a “real phone ring.” I do have to keep a cordless modern one in there too for all those times that you have to push buttons to order prescriptions and confirm appointments. I also like caller ID, so I have the best of both worlds!
Claudia says
You do, Laura!
