And in the blink of an eye, I’m back in Hartford.
Well, not exactly the blink of an eye…when I realized that I had to make a few stops on my way back to Hartford, I decided to leave a bit earlier. I’d even considered driving back this morning, and I could have done that, but I knew I had to stop at Whole Foods and buy groceries and I have a 12:00 rehearsal call and, with the traffic on I-84, I knew I’d be pushing my luck.
So, I arrived here around 4:30. Too soon, considering I’d been happily ensconced at the cottage. But, duty calls. And I’ll be back there on Sunday night.
Sigh.
I think coming back to Hartford resonates more this time around since Don will be headed off to NYC before my time here ends and we’ve spent a fair amount of time apart this year. With the tour and next year’s extended time in NYC, we’ll be apart a great deal of the time. We’re grateful for our blessings but they don’t override the hardship of being separated.
Sigh again.
Anyway. That’s the way it is now and will be for a while. We’re working – both of us – and that’s always exciting and rewarding.
We were sitting on the porch yesterday, having coffee, and we started to talk about the fact that both the eclipse and our stove were starting their journey across the country at the same time. So, we grabbed our phones and started googling ‘goddess of the sun’ and ‘goddess of the moon’ and the word for ‘eclipse’ in other languages. Don reeled off more than a few but I interjected that if the name is so difficult for us to pronounce that we can’t remember it, it’s a no-go.
Finally, after about 10 minutes of this stuff, Don came up with Stella. We looked at each other and said “Yes, that’s it!” So, Stella, it is.
I bought these shoes in LaJolla and I haven’t worn them yet! The fabric looks rather like satin, so I’m not about to wear them when I’m slogging around our property. I tossed them in the car when I was packing up to return to Hartford. Today? Rain. But I’m going to wear them soon.
They make me happy.

Love your shoes!!!I’m sorry both of you are going to be a part more. I do see two good things about it. One–your new stove will stay spanking brand new with you both not being home. Two–you are both on the east coast and not separated by a country. (I know what it is like to be separated because of one’s job. With both of us in the Army, two weeks after we were married my husband had to go back to Germany. And to get back in time for duty he had to leave on Christmas day. And I had to file paperwork to join him in Germany. And with that, there was no guarantee that we would have been stationed in the same place. I could have been sent anywhere in Germany. But thankfully there was a opening for me. So I got to be stationed there 5 months later.
Rethinking what I wrote. I hope I didn’t offend. I was trying to give a smile.
Oh gosh! No offense taken, Trina! And the fact is, if I could keep that darned stove in pristine condition by not using it I would! (Sort of.)
Well, we’ll both not be home for only one week. Then I’ll be home while D is in NYC. Maybe a few days here and there with him in the city but that’s about it!
I really love that piece of barkcloth. It speaks to me. Reminds me that red was never a favorite color, but in my “old age”, that’s changing.
I’ve always loved red – when I was a young child, I would only check out books with a red cover from our local bookmobile.
Love the name Stella and it’s perfect for you new stove. Those shoes just make me smile. So cute and we all need some cute in our lives. This has been a crazy year for you and Don. So many blessings but with it have come too much time apart. Still you are both so lucky to have each other, careers you love and work! Hugs!
We are. And we’re face-timing a lot more than we used to, so that helps.
Stella is a great name! Love those shoes….happy feet! I realize you two will be apart…but you are both doing what you love…so, there is that. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you two could work on the same project? Enjoy your day! ;)

Hi Claudia, I would like to say about your floor, obviously we know it is the result of Laquer, varnish or what ever was used at the time Deterirating, so how about a carefully timed , soak in some turpentine, or laquer remover what ever you have on hand.(small inconspicous space) but it will really thin that stuff out .Rinse Really Really well. Then your TSP in HOT hot Really hot water.
Then see if you need a scrub brush, or maybe just mop it. Then of course rinse well I would use a coat of paste wax right under the stove .That will 1. Help Keep it clean
2. make the Stove placement
easier.

Again, I think STELLA is exactly the right name for your new/old stove. Not only because of the eclipse, but also because you’re both in “show biz” and it SO reminiscent of an iconic play-slash-movie. Can’t wait to see a photo of the first thing you make with Stella. You’ll enjoy Stella for a long time. It’s great that she’s getting a new life instead of being relegated to a junk heap. So sad about our throw away society. I’m really appreciating the solid wood furniture I inherited from my late Uncle. There’s something about living with well-built items from another era that have stories to tell, and even better that I know the stories. And I feel good knowing my 20-something daughters appreciate those items just as much, so I know my furniture pieces will live on with them.
I agree. I’m all for renewing and appreciating beautiful items from the past.
