I was sitting on the loveseat next to Don late yesterday afternoon and I found myself staring at a glass lampshade I bought many years ago in San Diego. And I realized that I haven’t really ‘seen’ it for a while. You know, we get so used to the interior landscape of our homes that we often forget to really register something. That’s how it was for the lampshade.
So I got up and took a picture of it.
I found this in a little shop. I had been searching for a replacement for the shade that came with this vintage floor lamp and I found this beauty. I forgot how lovely the subtle touch of green is.
I walked around the house, camera in hand, and took some more pictures.
Reflections in the Wallace Nutting.
One of my favorite pieces of McCoy.
The top of the Necco Candies jar.
A mini Eiffel Tower surrounded by Roseville pottery.
Everything so dear, so loved by us. I’m going to do more of this.
We’re in for more rain for the next few days. Will it ever end? The Secret Garden, which always tends to be wet, is so soaked that we can’t spend any time out there. We’re not really complaining as the porch will do quite nicely. But I would love it to get dry enough out there to mow the back forty. And have another stab at mowing the front lawn.
Don’s photography skills are getting better every day. He loves working with the Crown Graphic and usually spends a few hours at a location. He’s now working with light and is studying how it changes and how essential it is to understand where the light is when you are working manually with one shot, one chance instant photography. He came back with two wonderful photos yesterday; beautifully focused, beautifully lit.
He amazes me. I’m so proud of him.
I just won the other Snow White egg cup that was up for auction. Should I have bought another one? I don’t know. But this one has eyes that are painted beautifully and the lettering is more centered on the cup. Hey, it won’t hurt to have two of them, will it? After years of searching, who would have thought I would end up with two of them? I’ll love them both.
Happy Friday.

You both are so talented! I have always loved your photography and now, too, Don’s. You need to put on a show. People would come, you know.
Enjoy your day!

Someday! Though, I have to say that I have NEVER seen him up for auction unless he was part of the entire set. I wonder why?
Linda @ A La Carte says
Winning the other Snow White egg cup made me smile. So glad you got it. Two is better then one! I think we do get so use to our home we don’t always ‘see’ everything. A camera lens helps us focus on the little things and enjoy them. So proud of Don and his new passion. His photos are getting better and better. Enjoy this day!

Hi Linda, i agree that through a camera lens, we can “see” better…a funny story: I took a photo of the mess my kids left one day years ago and showed it to them. “Wow, who left that mess?”, they queried. “You did” I said and brought them over to it. They didn’t even realize the photo was an area of our house! They started tidying right away. I have good kids, but sometimes I have to remind them…
Linda @ A La Carte says
Wendy T that is a great story!!
Claudia says
Exactly. Don and I were talking about that this morning, that using the lens to isolate some detail or a particular item makes you see it differently.
Have a great day, Linda.
Wendy T says
Claudia, I love your little details photos. Not that I don’t love the big picture photos of your cottage, but the ones where you’re emphasizing just one or two items in close-up and the background is unfocused are very charming.
Claudia says
I like them too and I’m going to do more of them. Thanks, Wendy!

We’ll pretend your Snow Whites are twin sisters. That’s the other part of her story we never knew!
It’s lovely that you can look around and appreciate what you’ve gathered. That’s what it’s all about; to surround yourself with what’s beautiful and means something to you, not just what’s functional.
I used to work with a gal whose house was neat and clean but looked like a generic furniture showroom in a big box store. There wasn’t one speck of anything that was personal; no framed photos, no real art, no collections of things. She was a fan of paperback novels for relaxation after a busy workday, but she even had those inside a closed-door cabinet (whereas I get immense joy in seeing my books as dรฉcor). It was such a sterile, cold environment. The home had zero personality. (Strangely, SHE did; she had a great personality. Vibrant, bubbly Italian. But her home in no way reflected it.)
I liked this woman a lot; we worked together and she was highly regarded in the company. Very skilled. She was a naturally generous and uncomplaining person. I never saw her get angry or lose patience with her staff. All I could think of was that work life dominated; she got her identity more from her career than she did her private life. She never cooked; it was always take-out/delivery or eat-in at restaurants. Her kitchen counters were bare (easy mop-up!). I think her house was just for sleeping. No connection to the earthy stuff like landscaping; didn’t go outside; did nothing with the yard except to pay to have the grass mowed. (She was also my neighbor and I’d previously known the house, so I knew how different it could have looked. Other neighbors would say to me, “Who is she? We never see her.” True. She’d drive right into the garage and the automatic door shut behind her.) I guess she just had to do what was right for her. But her home had no soul. “Bland” couldn’t even begin to describe it.
Claudia says
I’m always surprised when people live that way, but for some, it’s just not a priority. Of course, that’s so far from who I am that I can’t comprehend it, but different strokes, etc.
Tana says
You very definitely needed the second Snow White egg cup. You did good. I loved the pictures you took. I’m pretty sure your pottery is my very favorite of your collectables. All that Roseville and McCoy take my breath away.
Claudia says
Oh, thank you! They take my breath away, too. xo
Marilyn says
Congratulations on winning the Snow White egg cup. As a twin I say two is better than one.

Claudia says
And you would know! Thank you, Marilyn!
Donnamae says
Oh good….you needed the other Snow White. After all, those dwarfs can get rambunctious…probably takes two of them to keep them in line!
I like the glimpses of your collections…so pretty. As someone mentioned, the camera lens often sees things that the human eye doesnโt readily pick up. Itโs a great exercise for a non-blogger to do….gives us another way to see whatโs really in our homes.
Enjoy the rest of your day! ;)
Claudia says
Thank you, Donnamae!

I believe the fact that you two love the things in your house is what really makes it a home…When I see something new in your cottage I know it is there because you have fallen in love again!…What fun that after you tried all of these years for a Snow White egg cup you now have two!…I look forward to meeting her!
Claudia says
I’ll be sure to post a picture of her when she arrives!
